My ps2 is still working. Its a US model (70012). Me and my friend are playing GTA right now.

As for playing without a boot disc. No you cant. You need either Swap Magic, a Gameshark, or ActionReplay. SM is most recommended.

I have yet to know anyone that has had their lazer "burn out". Must be something that a few unlucky people get. As you can see from my prevous posts, mine has been like that for quiet some time.

well if it does, he also sayed that i just had to put in a regular game like GTA 3, then open the tray, put in my back up (GTA SA) and the back up will load. please try this and tell me if this works. thank you
it doesn't work, the disc never stops spinning, you will end up screwing up your ps2.

I can only advise you to ask around on as many forums as you're able to. But in the end, you're going to be taking a risk: if you're unhappy with it, don't do it, wait for a modchip, or just play the games region encoded for your machine.

For me, I was nervous about doing it, but everything's fine, and I'm happily playing two Japanese import shooters right now.

Just pop in Swam Magic dvd, wait til the screen loads and says Insert Disc. Switch discs, hit X.

I'd like to see how many people actually have had their lazer "burn out".

hmm~ okay. Does the swap magic dvd (when you say 'dvd' it can mean the dvd or game version rite?) but you see when i put my ps2 on (after all mods have been complete) i still see this red dot (lazer?) that i think is reading the disk...and when i open it up more then like 2 cm it the disk justs stop...so is this rite, or do i have 2 swap disks with the flip lid open less then 2cm?

melon u are really confused huh. thats ok though :)

ok the lifting the lid 1-1.5cm thing was if u haven't taped down the switches, because the ps2 doesn't know the lid has been opened until it reaches 2cm or so, so if u didnt wanna open up ur console u could essentially lift the lid up 1 to 1.5cm up really slowly and put the swap disc in, then take it out and put the game in and then close the lid and it should play the game without u even touching the switches. this should be done with tweezers that have rubber tips so u dont scratch your discs.

if u don't want to do it that way you can open up the console and tape down the switches adn then u don't have to worry about the 1 - 1.5cm lifting anymore, cuz the ps2 will think the drive is closed no matter how high u lift the lid.

hope u got it :)

I used superglue on the internal switch, and use Blu Tak on the external switch when needed. Haven't had any problems with either, though sometimes the Blu Tak needs digging out when I've finished. :)

thanks for the reply now what iam saying is the people that lasers have burnt out is it because of the super glue running down on to the board and making damage to the laser

I woudn't worry about it. When I get my hands on the new PStwo (they seem to be sold out everywhere until Black Friday) I'm just going to go ahead and tape it. If the laser burns in 2 weeks guees what? Back to Walmart it goes and I get a new one. Then I'll try a different method.

A guy saying people are only having problems with super glue he saying

One again, to all those people who are waiting to mod their ps2 because of the problmes here.

DON'T WAIT

the only people who are having problems are the retards using super glue. Thats a no, no with electronics since the glue might cover parts on the motherboard you don't want it to.

USE TAPE, its safe, its remavable, its easy! No one here has had problems with the ps2 and tape.

The only problems people were having was, noobs using super glue, which unless you are super brave or know exactly what your doing, YOU SHOULD NOT USE! Those noobs put too much glue on and it trickled down on to the motherboard which makes the ps2 useless, unless removed.

so it looks to me that these guys are right that the pstwo doesnt lock up our the laser doesnt burn out its just because super glue is running down on to the motherboard all that iam trying to found out now before i try this softmod is any one having problems with the tape thanks for all the replys

you cant take it back because it will be void to do this soft mod you have to remove the void sticker witch makes it void so they know that you have opened it.

i have just found some one with the tape softmod this what he says

from my personal experience with the pstwo, i can tell you guys that the Super Glue Method Doesnt work.. Fhornmikey, owes me a Pstwo Motherboard for that. luckily i got a new pstwo moterboard for free, this time around i used the tape method, it works, but than again, it doesnt. let me be more clear... after 2-3 days of playtime on the ps2, the tape gets heated up and starts to peel off the switch.. meaning every 3 days, you gotta open the pstwo and tape the switch back down, maybe i should use heavier tape, but im scared to touch that switch since my last experience..

Hi every one, this is my first post. I also fcuked myself up by the superglue method. Here is my story:

I bought my Pstwo on 3 weeks ago, when I got home I start to use the tape method to mod it.(I just heard from someone, never go to any forum before) and I succeed playing it using swap magic for 3 weeks! but during these 3 week the tape got off 3 or 4 times so I have to open up the case and refasten it. And later I think this is too annoying to open it up every 3 or 4 days, I then had a stupid idea to super glue it(I didn't go to any forum so I didn't know it is bad!). so I super glued it. it played for couple backup games using swap magic and the next morning it fcuked up! it wouldn?t read any media as many person described here. But a thing I didn't see anybody mention is that : when my pstwo was fcuked up, it stay at the browser screen. but the screen is weird because normally there will be 5 or 6 small bright dot spinning there, but now it is only one big dot in center and sits there not moving. Has anybody seen this? I regret so much!! I played it for 3 weeks using tape well but screwed by super glue. Then I open it again for check, and I accidentally peel the WHOLE internal switch off when trying to get the super glue off! now only four soldering point left on my board. my heart was popping. and then I start to search forum and search for articles for any help. I found something useful in here: http://www.ps2nfo.com/pstwo.html . They said solder the two stripes in the internal switch to make it permanent connected. but I already have the whole thing popped off, so what I have to do is to solder the four solder points all together. and then I test again using one switch drilled and attached on side suggested by http://www.ps2nfo.com/pstwo.html and to my relief It worked again... just don't know how long its gonna last.

some personal idea: maybe not right.
I think the super glue method worked at first few days because the super glue is not Oxygenized at the first few days. when you put super glue in, the super glue sticks between the touch point of the two strips inside the internal switch. At first the circuit is close and the current can pass through. but couple days later the glue oxygenized and makes the circuit open. and you can not make the circuit close again coz it was super glued.

SO please use tape ONLY if u want to mod! I am already a stupid example don?t follow my foot step!

Just an idea hope we can figure it out some day.

Hi everyone....
I would like to post my experience.
I live in chile. 2 weeks ago, i recieved my new pstwo. I own SM 3.2 cd and 2.0 DVD.
I opened the console, as i go it. Used a combination of tape and a slim metal covered with plastic (like the ones you get to close the bread bag. I covered the sensors and used some of the metal to keep the tape from moving on the back side sensor.

My experience has been excelent. I have been playing all my backups, and had no problem at all. I have a new slimline pstwo modded and working 100%

Hope this helps resolve the myths, my experience has been excelente..

if anyone is confused, glad to answer any questions
bye

For those that are curious about the laser burn out issue, its not SM or any modification done to the PSTwo that is causing it. Its the dodgy quality of the PSTwo itself (apparently).

The Matrix team have devised a solution to the laser burn out problem. Details here:
http://www.infinitymod.com/cgi-bin/matrix/site.pl?page=laserv12

There is another solution using a MFD board. Board details here:

@rubixcube
I'm not sure if you are still reading this thread, but I'm from Aust too and the DMS chips (3 & 4) can be brought from stores like quantronics or gamingpanther (both located in Sydney).

I can only imagine duct or parcel tape would work: I tried sellotape and it just kept popping back up. :) That's why I went for the superglue option.
