Wonder what kind of rpgs will the PS3 have. With blue ray and all im thinking its gonna be pretty huge. Like huge maps and probably hundreds maybe thousands of different monsters and accesories. Probably would take hella days to finish the game. At least voice overs would fit in every conversation instead of mixing it with text for unimportant characters. In my opinion its better to read the text rather than to have voice overs for characters. I like how it sounds in my head better for some reason kinda like how people say reading Harry Potter is better than watching the movie.

Never read Harry Potter ....but u know what im trying to say

Glad you haven't read Satan err Harry Potter's books. Yuck. The dumbening of America is underway when stuff like that is popular lol. I'd imagine RPG's for the PS3 will be a lot like RPG's for the PS2: big on style, lacking in substance. I'm sure there will be exceptions like continuations of the Xenosaga and FF series, and some nice originals, but all in all I think it'll be more of the same mind numbing graphics and ass blowing plots. I hope I'm wrong, but with all that power at their command, game developers are going to cater to the braindead denizens that inhabit the mainstream of America's pop culture these days. Call me a cynic, but that's how I see it.

Yeah, I have to say I like the voices in my head too, just not the one's that tell me to do nasty things, those I wish would stop. (=P)

But honestly, I've gotten used to Voice Acting...when it's done well. That's why I wish they'd give the option to turn on/off voice overs, and turn on/off subtitles. So if the voice acting is actually done well, hey kudos to the dev team they get to stay on, if not off they go. That's catering to gamers likes, letting us choose more options on how we play the game.

Just like Tokijin said, I fear that RPG developers are catering more and more to the mainstream as well, in fact I know it. Back when RPGs were more niche titles, sure they didn't get the big budgets and shiniest graphics, but they had heart and intriguing stories. The developers also tried to create new systems to keep us entertained, whether battle, minigame, stat or item related. Now with the focus on flash and style over substance, we're getting super shiny games with awesome graphics, and are starting to lose its roots.

I know more mainstream people are playing RPGs, hell my roommate plays RPGs and he's the all American, red blooded football type. Main stream=more money. I guess it's good in some ways, bigger budgets, better looking games, but they also have to make RPGs more accessible to mainstream gamers. That's why I liked Enix, before Square ate them. They were always about making games for the gamer. Their titles were never the prettiest, but they were generally fun.

I guess I should say I haven't given up hope for S-E and RPGs in general, but for the bigger name brands, except for maybe DQ, I have. The name recognition for RPGs is probably going to be a bad thing. Those titles will be the first to be heisted into mainstream'ness and transfigured into shells of the older titles in the franchise. I just hope some crazy little party of developers focus on the roots of the RPG community and make games accordingly. And in the process of doing so, they'll actually inadvertently make tons of money. Save money by not making it the best looking game, focus on great gameplay, attract all the RPG diehards, make the gamers happy and they'll come back for more.

But hey, maybe there is nothing to worry about. Maybe next gen they'll actually be able to produce high production quality with great gameplay. That's the reality I'd like!

Well said TMACRPG. I agree with everything you said 100%. I would kill to have an experience like Xenogears again. I couldn't put that game down. I did nothing with my life until I finished the game, it was just that good. It was the same way with Final Fantasy VII. I skipped school for a week to play that game. I was in High School for that one. When Chrono Trigger originally came out for the SNES, I stayed home from school forever as well. I paid $85 for it at Kaybee. It was worth every penny, the game was great. When Secret of Mana came it, it was sick. I loved that game. That's still one of all time favs. I got the same nostlagic feel when playing thru Final Fantasy V a couple years back. I liked the job system and some of the regular enemies at the end of the game could wipe you out easily, even at high level. Lufia 2 was a great game. I played it thru on emulator a couple years back. I spent 34 hours to finish the stupid 100 floor tower deal. You didn't get anything incredible for doing so, it was just worth the challenge. Star Ocean 2 was a fantastic game. The Extra Dungeoun at the end was ridiculous. 13 floors of hell with no save points and mega hard enemires. The end boss was a pain, but it was sweet beating the crap out of her. Tales of Phantasia could be real annoying at points. Some bosses killed 4 me or 5 times before I beat them. I don't think the Dragon Quest has ever strayed far from it's roots either. The core of the game is the same. It's hard. You have to build levels in Dragon Quest games or you'll be sent to the netherworld many times. Random battles are frequent and unforgiving. The enemies toward the end of the game, forget it, they're always hard, regardless of level. The games are long. When you beat a DQ game, you earned it. I admit the only Dragon Quest game I've finished all the way was Dragon Quest v. I played thru six until it was no longer translated. That and my guys were at high level, so they weren't getting any job points from the enemies. Anyway, I like reminiscing about old games. That's why I like this thread. It's a release from answering the "do I need a mod play PS2 backups" or "does quality media really make a difference" threads. Cheers!

ffx-2 is too damn confusing and the bosses just plain dominate you. so far i am not too happy with it. why does nobody talk about 3? has anyone played it? it was my second favorite of them all.

my faves are..
3rd: ff3
2nd: ff7
1st: ff9

why does no one talk about ff9 either? it was the best ff in my eye. i had the most fun with it and the replay value is insane, so much to do and many different ways to do it.

But they all do sort of the same thing, and that is rearrange what you thought was real, and they remind you of the beauty of very simple things. You forget, because youre so busy going from a to z, that theres 24 letters in between... You turn on... tune in... and you drop out...

I have FF9, I just never bothered to play through it. I played a little of it, I didn't care for it as much as FFV, VII, and VIII. FFIII is historic in the FF series, it began to deal with more mature plot issues and was the first FF game to have a comprehensive job system. I have it on IMBNES emulator. I have FFI-FFX2. The only one I don't have is FFXI, since I don't play PS2 games online much.

ff9 hade a great plot and you get attached to the characters, and it, to me, had the best music from any previous ff. i have 11, and its pretty fun, but i hate how it takes hours to get 2 levels if that and money is scarce. so basically to finish the game would takes months unless you played 24/7 and had no job, then it would take about a month or 2. i hate how mmorpg's make you do too pointless enlongated leveling up to get one level done, only to have to spen 3 or 4 more days leveling to complete the next.

I just got done downloading La Pucelle Tactics. It's a quality Strategy RPG from Nippon Ichi Soft, same company that did Disgaea. I stay away from the MMORPG's, I use RPG's as my method to escape people lol. I've heard of World of Warcraft is really excellent. The visuals are quite impressive and I guess it takes like 40 people or more to kill some of the bosses. I don't need all that though. Give me a rewarding, plot driven, long, character rich console RPG and I'm happy. FFIX is probably good, I just never got into it. I'll play it some time. I'm too busy playing PS2 games. Modchips suck lol. Cheers!

Yeah BOF4 is my favorite game in the series. I really liked 2 and 4. I've beaten all of them. BOF5: Dragon Quarter disappointed me thoroughly. It was somewhat challenging, but the temp save deal never appealed to me. I didn't care enough to play through the game again with a good D Ratio. It just didn't interest me enough. Did you ever beat the "rider" in BOF4, it was a really tough enemy that inhabited Fou Lu's ruins. Fou Lu was fun to play as.

That's the second time I've heard BoFIV is a great game. My friend's been on my back telling me to buy it for years now. But since my collection of RPGs that I own, vs. the ratio of one's I've actually beaten is a little one sided (too many to play so little time, and I'm lazy) I've been putting it off.

I've beaten BoFI and II and own III but not yet IV. I guess I'll snag it on Ebay at somepoint. Lufia II is a great game. I liked it as well, the puzzles were neat for a SNES game. Unfortuneatly, Lufia wasn't as good as it's successor, IMO.

On Xenogears, same thing happened to me Tokijin. Although I didn't skip any days of school over it, it was the only thing I did while I was home. The only reason I wish they'd remake it is to fix up the second disc a bit, with the whole "narrative from a chair" thing going on. Other then that it's probably my favorite RPG, aside from FF6 and FFVII. I dunno it's too hard for me to rank them in any order cause I love them for different aspects. XD

xenosaga was a fun game, i never got around to the 2nd one tho. anyone play it?

I played thru the the first disc of Xenosaga Episode 2. It's okay. The game is good, I just like more interaction and less FMV. Definitely not the game to play if you have a short attention span lol. It's actually one of the few originals I own. You can download BOF 4 if you've got some method of booting PSX backups like Breaker Pro or a modchip. It's mod protected (at least certain versions are). Nothing a little PPF patching can't fix. I originally got into PSX backups before PS2 backups. That's what brought me to AD in the first place. I sort of stayed lol. There's a ton of excellent PSX RPG's, it was definitely an RPG friendly machine. Let's see I have Lunar 1&2, Xenogears, Vandal Hearts 1&2, Grandia, FFI-IX, Wild Arms 1&2, Thousand Arms, Saiyuki Jorneys West, Alundra 1&2, Dragon Quest IV and VII, Tales of Phantasia, BOF 3 and 4, Persona 1 and 2, Suikoden 1 and 2, Valkyrie Profile, Chrono Cross, Tales of Destiny and Tales of Symphonia, and many others backed up on CD. If anyone doesn't have a modchip, I encourage you to get one. :)

I agree with what some others have said. As long as the story line doesn't go to crap, I don't think I'll get sick of FF.

Let me pose this question. If FFX-2 didn't have the FF name attached to it, would it be in the same class as Unlimited Saga, Orphen: Scion of Sorcery, or some other God awful RPG? I couldn't stand more than 10 minutes of the game. That being said, I do have a backup of it. Maybe I was suckered in by the FF name. On it's own, maybe it's not a terrible game. However, in my opinion it's horrible when compared to FFX or other games in the series.

I did'nt find FF X-2 borring. Yea, chapter 1-2 were VERY wierd, but once the dark aeons, and the rizing action of the game, came to play, the game was more fun. And for graphically made women, they sure were uhh nice....lol
Leveling up was good feature aswell, and i like the good ending. There were lots of secrets, like defeating trema and all that. And unlocking those grids.
I consider x-2 8/10
x 9.5/10

I've only played 2 FF games in my life, and I LOVE THEM ALL.
