I've been using SW Technology (Optodisc) 1x media that burns at 2x with great results using Firmware A300. When I switched to A301 I got much worse result although the discs were still readable. Now I can't get hold of any SW Technology 1x discs anymore since they seem to sell only SW 4x discs. I tried a couple of these with the A302 firmware and it burned at 4x but the resulting curv in Nero DVD speed was bad. I tried it at 2x and it burned much better, but far from as good as the 1x-media. I also tried the 4x media with the A300 firmware and I could only burn it at 2x and I got read errors at the end of the disc.

Conclusion:

Optodisc 1x works great at 2x
Optodisc 4x does not work well

Using A302 firmware:

Verbatim DVD+RW (no manufacturer ID on DVD Identifier) rated at 2.4X burn at 2.4X but several have errors towards end of the disc.

Potex (Philips) DVD+RW rated at 4X, burn at 2.4X, no errors.

Maxell DVD+R, rated at 4X, burn at 4X, no errors.

Generic (VDSPMSAB 01) DVD-R inkjet printable rated at 4X, burn at 2X, no errors.

Ritek G04 DVD-R inkjet printable, rated at 4X, burn at 4X, MASSIVE errors.
I've tried these discs on this burner and on a different burner and not one of them can be played on the last 1/3 of the media. Stay away from Ritek inkjet printable!

For those who are new to this thread

Use Princo 4x DVD-R (A MUST)
Use DVD Shrink 3.16 and Nero 6.3x (RECOMMENDED)

use these and you will have perfect DVD's

for those in Canada
use www.blankmedia.ca for cheap princo media

Is the only way of checking if Princo Media is A-Grade to check if there is Princo printed in the middle of the disc? Could this be A-Grade media that burns great at 4x?

http://www.datorbutiken.com/se/default.php?artid=DVD-RPR4X47-10

Here is some other media labeled Princo 4x that i'm not sure of.

Who ever said that they couldn't read their pine dvd-r's after a week must have an over=powered laser cause its been about 3 weeks and my pine dvd-rs still play beautifully. Just thought i'd put in my 2 cents. STILL A GREAT BURNER

Anyone tried Datawrite Yellow 4x made by Princo? Are these as good as the Princo-labeled Princo discs? The Datawrite discs are 15 % cheaper. I haven't tried any Princo discs, but from what I have read on this forum the should work fine with the 4040b. I don't like to buy 25 of these to find out that they are all crap.

If your in Canada...all I can say is www.blankmedia.ca. They only have 1 type of Princo 4x dvd-r and they are the best ones. I got the 25pack from them and their beautiful. If you can find cheaper media, it ain't worth it.

Found a place which sell 50 Spindle DVD-R 4X for C$50 tax included, manufactured by LongTen...Silver top and purple dye and can burn at 4X with A302, the shop told me that, bought 2 to test and will test one later tonight and report back.

Hi,
Does anyone try to use LG 4040B to backup PS2 games? I tried to burn a game using 3 DVD-Rs(Ritek G04, Verbatim 4x (MCC), SIGMA(CMC MAG)), all can be read on PC, but none can be read on PS2(with HK Messiah 2 modded).

If someone succeeded in backing up PS2 games using this burner, plz tell me which brand of DVDs can be used.

I have a ps2 modded with Neo4 chip. I bought my LG4040B around Christmas, and I've backed up games without much problems... So far my ps2 play the following DVD-R properly:

Ritek G04 (burned by someone else)
Memorex 4x
Maxell 4x
Princo 4x (white label)

Pine 4x (burns at 2x) used to work... but my ps2 doesn't read them anymore.

hope this helps.

One more question about this drive: Does this drive have "bitsetting" ability? i.e., can I change the book type to DVD-ROM when burning a DVD+R/RW disc?

hm... I tried some software, but they seem to be manufacturer-dependent... so I can't really test it.

I'd say no for now.

Hi there,

I wentto the site you mentioned for the firmware upgrade and had a problem. When I tried to download it, the computer saved it as a html file not an exe file....even after I changed the file save type.

Any help??

Thanks

For those in the UK: RitekG04 branded Ritek on top very bad. Do not buy it. Not one works after 3Gb space. Had to compress all my stuff to less than 3Gb. I am running A303 firmware, I've read the entire thread; is it safe to assume that Princo -R will work, although there is a rumour that they are degradable and that Maxell will always work and last long time (although expensive)?
