Hello!
I just have some question about my FAT PS2. I somehow *cough* managed to get my hand on UsbExtreme, USBADVANCE and Hdloader.
I would like to know how to use them and what will be required in order for it to work. A step by step guide would be awesome. xD
Also, will I be able to play all sorta game with softmod because I hear that you can't play some and new games which has double layers with these softmod. Right or Wrong?
What are the Cons and Pros between the three and in overall which is the best?
and as for the real modchip, I'm not very good at it. so, I won't be able to do it myself but would like to know if I would be able to find a local store or w.e to mod it for me. BTW, I have no idea if there is one in NYC. If you live in NYC and know someone who does let me know.
Thank you so much for reading. Hope to hear from you geniuses.

Ok first off you will need someway to load your programs. I recommend the Independence Exploit since you have a fat ps2. Your external HD's will come in handy if you plan on using usbextreme or usbadvance.
I recommend you get an internal HD and a network adapter. That way you can use hd loader (which will be much faster than usb).

Western Digital Caviar SE16 SATA 320GB Hard Drive (7200RPM/16MB cache)
internal HD has the same spec as my external hard drive? 7200RPM/16MB of cache so what difference will it make?

You have a SATA drive, has to be IDE man. That is the big difference, the interface of said drive.

i'd stay clear of WD drives, unless you want to mod the network adapter. either seagate or maxtor will do.
go HERE and scroll to the bottom to see pics of my maxtor hdd connected to the network adapter.

didn't use paint; used oil pastel and a precision flathead to fill. fills in very nicely, and is softer than crayon. PS logo took over an hour.

No that's just an internal hard drive I checked online. That is not my hard drive. I have an external hard drive which has the same spec as that one 7200RPM/16MB cache. So, I said what are the difference in loading fast than? shouldn't it load as fast it would with an internal hard drive which has the same spec?
I have Seagate 400GB Pushbutton Backup External Hard Drive. Also, Western Digital My Book Essential WDG1U5000N 500GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache.

Ok, I'm kind of confused.
UsbExtreme: I can use my external hard drive to load backup up games. Does it has compatibilities issues?
USBADVANCE/Hdloader: Requires a IDE?

Wow man, that must of been intense. Does the color smudge at all if you touch it with your fingers/thumbs?
Edit: looks like we posted almost at the same time.
USBadvance/USBextreme - for use with external HD (USB interface)
HDloader - for use with a internal HD (IDE interface)
Even though your HD's have the same specs they do not have the same interface. One is USB, the other is IDE. The IDE one is going to be fastest and offer you greatest compatibility (game wise).

@HG27:
the colors will smudge if you use a towel or cloth. rubbing with your fingers will cause very minimal to no smudging. using the precision flathead came in real handy when doing the PS logo.
you can see that there's some green in the yellow. crank up the contrast, and you'll be able to see the comparison between my work and the original.
@Mazx:
you will want to use hdloader and a IDE hdd. hdloader has the highest game compatability for any hdd program.

HDLoader also requires a Network adapter?
So, let me get this right, all I have to do is buy the IDE, hook it up with FAT PS2 and install the file in the IDE through Network adapter with USB? confused a bit on that part..
is there a step by step guide for HDLoader?
Also, what kind of IDE are we talking about any?
ATA/PATA/SATA etc?
Thanks!

Maybe there is some sort of clear coating for pastels. You know like that resin stuff they put on wood.
Edit:
2 min apart man.
@Maxz
HD loader is the only program you will need an adapter for. Here is a good guide for using HD Loader.
Any IDE based HD should work, though not all will work. Here is a compatibility chart/list.

Yeah I saw your msg after mine. By the way, Maxtor does a better job than Seagate? How much space does each game takes usually the max? 2GB per game?

depends on the game. some games will take up 4+gigs, others may just be 1gig. i have 30 games on my maxtor 300gig, and 100gigs is taken up by the games.

that should work fine. it'll slip on the network adapter with no modding. only western digital drives need the network adapter modded becasue the IDE and molex ports are spread farther apart.

Awesome. Thanks you!
I was waiting for your reply. I will order the hard drive right way. Thanks again guys. I hope, I get through it and hopefully it won't be too painful to plugin.
Edit: OOps forgot to ask where can I buy the PS2 Network Adapter?

you will have to get the network adapters used. gamestop usually has some for $20 a piece.
when loading games onto the hdd, do not use the ps2 itself. it'll take about an hour or two for one game. you will want to rip the games onto your computer with dvd decrypter or imgburn (both are from the same company; imgburn is the latest), and then load the games onto the ps2 hdd with winhiip.

I will use downloaded ones. So, I won't have to go through so much trouble. Will I still need these files if i just download the *cough* files from the net? I can just copy and paste them into the hdd and run HDLoader and good to go right?

aD doesn't condone piracy, which is why you should only load the games you own. aD mods will go crazy if they see anything relating to piracy. also, ripping from your disc is faster than downloading.
@HG27:
there might be some kind of clear coating. oil pastels is like a softer version of crayons, but it's not as shiny or as hard as crayons. when i filled in the playstation 2 on the system itself, i used white crayon, and it was a itch removing the excess. also, the color somewhat dulled over time. the oil pastel colors still pop out.

I'll have to give it a shot sometime. I got 3 fat PS2's (1 is in having problems though). Run into any big problems with this project, or was it just time consuming.
@Maxz
That HD should serve you well, way bigger than mine (20GB). Just remember that there are also DVD9 games like god of war. These are over the standard 4.37 GB, god of war being 7.93 GB.
Other good places to check for the network adapter would be ebay and amazon. ;)

it's just time consuming. before i did the network adapter, i did my official sony memory cards. two are filled with blue oil pastel, so it looks official, and my exploit memory card is in white. also, i did the controller ends in white, but with crayon. those only took a few minutes.
to prevent excess oil pastel getting everywhere, i taped off the surrounding area; something i learned after doing the playstation 2 logo. you'll get a cleaner, and almost official look.
most of my systems have these touches; only one untouched is the 360 and wii. the one that came out nice is my gamecube. it has the retro feel to it now. i'm trying to make it have the original nintendo look.

That's awesome man, I was thinking of cutting out the text on the cube, so that if I had LED's below, the text would glow. Your idea of course would much easier and less complicated than my idea.
Here is what my cube looks like right now.
Back
Front
It's got a clear case (full sized), internal wavebird receiver mod, LED controller port mod, and a XenoGC chip installed (quicksolder).
