update: from the jaws of hell . . .
- or, out of night, breaketh day -
crazy software: when the software finished going through the movie, it had created the AVI file, without telling me; then when i finally lost patience and stopped the program/project it said i was *cancelling* it; then when i looked in my harddrive, there was the AVI. so did i let Pinnacle burn it to disc? no way after the last 48 hours! i imported it to Nero6 and burned it to DVD-RW there.
now sleep, gentle sleep . . .

I have the same rendering problem as everyone using 9.4.3. I'd like to downgrade to 9.3.X. My problem is that my CD version is 9.0 (which I patched to 9.4.3). Is there a place on the pinnacle web site where I can download the patch to bring it up to a 3.X version?

I had to downgrade as well. Remember the fault is with the capture, so you must capture again. Since Pinnacle have refused to sort out this problem, I have no qualms in offering you the patch. I still have it, but it's 58.9Mb. I have broadband, so it's not a problem for me. How can I get it to you? Would afterdawn allow me to upload it to a central location? If you are prepared to send me your email address, I will be happy to send it to you. I still think we should collectively sue them!

I was using ver 7 and then needed to edit 20GB of video into a DVD (4GB). I read some upcoming news about a 'great' version 10 coming which promises to solve all my problems. I got nothing but misery after upgrading to version 10. Almost not even a working product .... now the agent who sold me the product has gone missing!
I installed version 9 and it was better than v10 and at least I could get some editing work done. But when I went into Make Movie (rendering) ... the nightmare with Pinnacle seems to come back.
After reading the post here about this product, I will be changing to something else.
My advice to all ... stop mucking around with Pinnacle. It's a joke ... go with something else that work.

Everyone claims that the problem is in the capture. So can anyone explain this. After my earlier problems (see earlier in thread) I finally cut out all 'corrupted' clips and had a nice DVD. I now wanted to improve it slightly. I saved the working project (still renders and burns OK) to a new name. I added some more voice overs, lowered the volume on parts of the master track, and extended the time a few stills showed. That's all, no new movie clips. It refused to render. Paused at a point previously OK.
I tried from the start again - working project, add the voice overs etc. Fails to render.
Finally, I cut off a few seconds off a few clips and tried again - success. I've no idea why or how. Is it just random?

I not only had rendering problems which the company never really addressed but the program was messing up my computer big time. Version 8 was not too bad but as soon as I got nine all hell broke loose. Just as a side light, my son is one of the top men in lcomputer support at Boeing and so I know it was not my computer. At any rate the way I fixed the whole mess was this. I bought a 250 gig harrd drive and put Windows xp and pinnacle on one partition and that is all. On the other partition are all my video clips and pictures that I am going to use. I also render on that drive. Apparently the program has problems when it has to look for information on other drives and there appear to be some compatibility issues also. At any rate when I want to do video I just boot up on that drive and I haven't had a problem since. Hope it helps someone.

Just to confirm that after suffering the same rendering problems in Pinnacle Studio 9.4.3. I followed the advice and captured the movie with WinDV. After this Pinnacle Studio had NO problem rendering. So it seems that something does go wrong in the capturing in Pinnacle.
By the way, I also noticed that Pinnacle "lost" the audio tracks in some sections while capturing. Again, WinDV did not have this problem(thanks!).

Hi All -I'm a brand new addition to your thread.
First of all, let me say thank you - it is quite reassuring to find 'lots' of other people having the same problems as I am.
I will also quickly say how appalling Pinnacle have been generally. My Live-chat with their staff have been a complete waste of time and one of their operators just cut me off in the middle of me typing my problem to him!!
Anyway, enough griping - to business.
I know some of you will groan when I say this, but I'm afraid I am not the most technically minded person to post here - I would appreciate some feedback if you can however. I saw that it was wise to read through the entire thread so that is what I did.
With that in mind.....
I played my miniDv tape into Pinnacle (9.4.3 by the way), edited it, put in my transistions, a title at the start and end and previewed it. All good so far. I then click on Disc and it tells me it needs some rendering. This it does and then spits out the DVD tray and asks for disc. I insert a DVD-R (TDK 4.7Gb) and in it goes.
That's it. It seems to be doing something - for want of a better word, the 'barber pole' beneath the preview screen keeps scrolling so I assume this is doing something or is this the 'hanging' that everyone refers to?
I've tried leaving it and coming back to it but it hasn't gotten anywhere.
Getting to the end of your thread this morning, I was excited to see many of you resolved your issues by using WinDv and this is where my question comes. I really do need a fairly straight forward, user friendly process without getting completely lost in technical speak.
Do you all still recommend my using WinDv alongside Pinnacle and is it straight forward? Do I have to start again from scratch (no big deal, I've only edited one 60 minute tape)? Or, are their any other options open to me?
After all your helpful advice so far, I repeat my thanks generally but would really appreciate a bit of personal advice tailored to me.
Thanks in advance people.
(I know I'm gonna regret that 'barber pole' simile).

The procedure that I use is to finish my editing work and click on "make movie". At that point, I put a DVD blank in the drive. Look for a "Settings" tab at the lower right of the current screen. I then check the settings to be sure that I have chosen the output "media" (in your case, choose DVD-R)and the other "make disc settings". Your manual gives a fair discription of each of the fields. Be sure to select the proper "disc writer device" (It should be in the drop down list). As a separate note, be sure than your DVD burner will burn the type of media you plan to use. I think your project will go now.
The "hanging" issues usually occur during the "rendering" phase.
The horizontal barber pole moves slowly as the process moves through rendering; compiling; and finally burning.
Good luck!

Oh, I forgot to ask, can someone also explain what the 'registry clean up programs' are and where I find them?
Thanks again

Hi Leazle. As long as you are doing the actual capturing process with Pinnacle 3.4.3 there should be no problem, and no need to use any other program (remember, it's the capturing that is the problem). Follow the procedure given by Robert - that's how I do it. When it "freezes" - it hangs on the one scene for ever. I admit you have to wait a while to be sure. The program is not hung - the render process has frozen. You can still move windows about, and stop the process. Good Luck.

So if the render process has frozen, I need to cancel it and start again or sit and wait?
Thanks btw

If the render process has frozen, you will need to recapture. No point in running it again. Did you capture in 3.4.3? If so, experience of this thread suggests you shouldn't have a problem.

Hi Allan
Not sure I know what you mean by 3.4.3
I have version 9.4.3.70. What do you think?
Sorry for delay in reply - was writing from work earlier!

Sorry Leazle. Trying to do it from memory (have just removed Pinnacle from my machine, although I intend to reinstall). If you check back the thread, the problem is caused by capturing with 9.4.3 - it causes the rendering to freeze. Capturing with WinDV, then editing and rendering with 9.4.3 - is OK. What some people have done is to go back to 9.3 - that's what I did - and you can capture, edit and render safely with that.
Hope that's a bit clearer.

That's fantastic Allan. So I will download WinDV, using that to capture, followed by editing and rendering in Pinnacle.
I can't 'go back' to 9.3 right? I never had that - I just bought 9.4
But that is fine - I will try the route you suggest and be back to let you know when I finally succeed in burning to a DVD.
Thanks once again - I really appreciate the assistance.
Although I find it incredible that Pinnacle allow things get to this, the sense of community on this thread (and others like it I'm sure) is amazing!!!

Hi - looking back through the thread, I guess I'm kind of aiming this at websokind from a while back - but open to all help.
I did as you suggested and captured my MiniDV using WinDV. Wonderful, really easy. I then imported file by file into Pinnacle Studio (9.4.3). For the first time, it rendered properly, sweeping twice, without problem. It asked for a blank disc, I inserted a new disc and ....... nothing. No hard disc activity, no anything. The progress bar is still scrolling but other than that ..... nothing.
Argghhhhh... I thought I had it this time but alas, no.
Any other suggestions? From anyone?
Thanks in advance
Lee

hi,
i have Pinnacle 9.1 (no compulsion to upgrade presently) which still plays me up now and then but this may be more down to the fact i don't have all the time necessary to stay with it - so you keep forgetting bits ... but i do know something in my pc was defaulted to cause rendering to stop, after about 60 minutes - just when you're getting into it - it stopped working! re-setting that time limitation has made life much easier: there is no way i would have hit upon this without help from another Pinnacle forum, though - nothing warned me about this in the Pinnacle software . . .

Hi mega6 - thanks for the reply.
That sounds feasible for my issue. In saying that, it completed both sweeps for rendering even though it took about 3 hours!
It was only at the point it sked for a blank disc did it just sit there? Do you think that still sounds like the same issue you had?
Oh boy, what a chore this pinnacle nonsense is!

hi,
could be - does sound like something's switched itself off somewhere along the line?
i was advised to go to START, CONTROL PANEL, POWER OPTIONS -
power management settings should be set to "Always On", and everything should be set to "never" -
turn off monitor: never
turn off hard disks: never
system standby: never
system hibernates: never
check out <Pinnacle_Studio-subscribe@yahoogroups.com>
none of this would be an issue if Pinnacle addressed it in their software tutorial - i mean, if you could *find it* in there!
bests,

Hi
I looked at what you suggested Ric - unfortunately everything in control panel was as it's supposed to be.
I don't get it - capturing in WinDV, editing in Pinnacle, click make movie and it all seems fine. Two sweeps, spits out the drawer and asks for a blank DVD. I put a disc in, it closes, whirrs for a minute and then stops! Nothing. No hard drive activity, no disc activity .......! What am I doing wrong? Or what IS wrong with the DVD drive?
Daft question but I'm using DVD-R's. Would a DVD+R make any difference?
Anyone?

Ric - Lee again
As this is driving me crazy, I thought I'd read back through this thread again to see if there's something I might be missing. I saw your earlier post about importing the AVI files into Nero 6 and burning there - I thought I'd give this a try.
Compiled no problem but again, when I put a blank DVD-R in, it closes, then stops. What do you think could be wrong with my DVD drive?
Anyone?
