Hello everyone, this is my first post on this forum :) I hope that my (limited) knowledge might be able to help some people!
First things first... I have a problem that I was hoping someone might know how to remedy or possibly have suffered too.
I recently took delivery of an NEC 2500A and have updated the firmware to 1.07. I tested the writer first using Alcohol, and managed to write 8x on Datawrite yellows. I copied a friends already-shrunk copy of a DVD for this and it worked really well.. burnt in under 15 minutes :D
However, I went out earlier and tried to copy a DVD-9 disk, using AnyDVD to remove the encryption and DVD Shrink to compress it and then Nero to burn it. The first time I did this, it stopped halfway through, so that was coaster number 1! :( The second time I tried it, I rebooted first, closed all other programs running in the background and restarted the copying process. This time, DVD Shrink analysed the disk fine, and I went out while it was shrinking it down. When I returned my computer had rebooted itself.
Funnily enough, I tried it once more, and it worked. My friends has been burning away happily with his NEC, also updated to 1.07. Can anyone shed any light on this mystery? Also, could you answer these little q's...
Does it matter if you have little HD space? I have around 10Gb on my main drive (which is where the temporary VOBs are kept).
Does it make a difference if you have apps running in the background... such as Emule or Word.
I'm sorry if parts of this question have been answered previously, I performed a search and found bits and bobs, but nothing comprehensive!
Many, many thanks
James

HI hp01jpc, Welcome to AD. Your HD space is barely enough at 10Gig. If you do a dvd that was already a backup copy it was about 4.4gig so it worked OK. Time to empty out some junk off the old HD and defrag it. Try to get the free space up to 15/18 gig just to be sure you have enough. When doing a dvd backup, don't run anything in the background, turn off Anti-virus and do the backup only. No surfing the net.

Hi Jerry, thanks for your advice. I guess the lack of free HD space was causing the drive to be temporamental then! Good job I now have a feasible back up solution :)
Thanks again...

Hi James,
Remember that a HD will crash when 92-95% full. When we say xxx program needs, that doesn't mean the last on your HD. Subtract aboout 7% of your HD space to find out what you really have free. Your PC rebooting is telling you that it doesn't have enough room to move around and do what you are asking it to do.
An option is to add an additional HD connected to a 2.0 USB outlet. Consider it.
cheers,
Pete

Hello,
I have a quick question that I hope someone can help me out with. I recently bought a NEC 2500A and when I burn a DVD copy it's choppy or skips alot and I think it is due to the fact that the copy is burnt too fast for the DVD player. The slowest available speed for this burner is 2X (it actually says 1.0X but always burns at 2X), so I was wondering if there is any way to get the burner to write at 1X (firmware etc.) Thanks in advance.

Hi srg775,
Me thinks your frier be fine. If you'd stop using that "cheapo" media you've been using for DVD backups you'll find that everything will be just fine -
Come-on over here, sit down and bring a pencil, I'm going to want you to take notes -
Let's use Memorex as good example as media goes, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. 4 different companies manufacture Memorex BTW and the quality varies widely as you might imagine. Easy to see now why the quality of a big-named company can?t be trusted -
1. * Cheap media freezes, skips, stutters, pixelats, partially jams, may be rejected and lest we forget, our old standby, giving you the old just, refuses to be recognized routine :-(
Besides "Freezing", "skips" and pixelations, many times you?ll get a ?Cyclic Redundancy error? or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won?t accept your ?cheap? media :-(
Another problem which ?pop?s up? is a ?*Power Calibration Error?. This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media.
*A ?Power Calibration Error? can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn?t usually the case. Trying to shut down your software and ejecting your DVD then restarting your program and re-inserting the same media recently cleaned has been known to help.
Inexpensive media or even average media is great for text, Data, Spreadsheets, .Jpg and .Gif pictures and is good even for MP3 music BUT for DVD backups - BLAaaaaaT! It SUCKTH in an extremely Big-th way !
2. A good grade media is needed for DVD reproduction !
?Branded? Ritek G04's or Branded Verbatim are what we?re looking for OR any media boasting ?Advanced AZO Metal Dye?, this indicates a superior dye application, while they are sometimes a bit ?pricey? they are acceptable.
Prices online from Meritline.com have gotten Ritek G04 down below a dollar a disc -
Question - If you make coasters out of 3 cheap or even average discs and good copies from 3 Branded Verbatim discs or 3 ?Branded? Ritek G04 discs - which ones then will you say are too expensive ? The 3 ?Cheapo?s with no movie backup OR, the 3 recommended discs with a perfect backup on each disc ?
Bear in mind, Memorex, Fuji, Sony, TDK, Orange Pack and others are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets, Data and your text backups and archives, they just don?t work well for DVD backups. Even DataSafe G04?s made by Ritek have been reported as inferior quality and are evoking that ?Oh no, I shouldn?t have gotten those.?
Remember, for DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win, the majority of people lose, varying amounts but, they still lose :-(
Let's try the right media for the job - just buy a 5 pack of what we recommend that will settle it once and for all - Don?t cheat though, buy the EXACT media we recommended -
Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty; it surely cannot hurt.
cheers,
Pete

Hi Pete,
I'm new to this forum and just looking around. I'm trying to determine which is the best software to use to obtain the best compressed picture.
DVD Decrypter with CloneDVD2 (from elby), DVD Decrypter with Instant Copy 8, or DVD X Copy Platinum.
Anyway, what made me post was your comment about Memorex being undesirable media.
I've read that the spindles of 25 are made by a different manufacturer than the 10-packs and the 25s ARE junk.
I've only bought the 10 packs and have gone through 10 to 12 boxes of them with only 2 coasters which I think were both due to error on my part.
NEC 2500A burner with firmware 1.07
The Memorex all play (with no pixelation) in both the computers and the 3 stand-alone players in the house.
They cost me approx $1.50 each when the 10-packs are on sale at Future Shop or Best Buy in Toronto.
The best deal I've found for reliable media was HP 4X DVD+R at the TigerDirect store 30 minutes away. Spindle of 50 for $35. I think they realized it was too good a deal and just raised it to $42. Still a deal if they get more in stock.
Just my 2 cents. :)

If your using Shrink why are you using anydvd with it? Shrink will do that with out anydvd. You have 2 pieces of software trying to strip the css they might cause problems with each other.
The only stupid questions are the ones you don't ask. If you don't ask you will never know.

I used AnyDVD with shrink for ALL of my backups until i discovered InterVideo's DVDCopy 2 (comparison to Shrink, DVD2One, etc. was done here: http://www.dvd.box.sk/articles8.php?stranka=1 you'll see they looked at a bunch of DVD Backup Tools that people like to compare, they include:
Ahead Nero Recode 2 ver. 2.0.0.7
Elaborate Bytes CloneDVD v.1.3.11.2
DVD X Copy XPRESS
DVD2one v. 1.40
DVD Shrink v. 3.1.1
Pinnacle InstantCopy v. 7.0
InterVideo DVD Copy v. 1.2
The comparison is done with:
Matrix DVD PAL
And on Intervideo's site they say that quality has improved by 25% in 1.2 to 2
P.S. did you know that you can have a dual-layer burner by updating the NEC 2500A with 2510 firmware?

That dual layer update for the nec2500 had destroyed many drives. I would think twice about installing it at this time. You will have about a 50% chance of killing your drive. Just a friendly note on the subject.

Hello again
Just wanted to ask a quick question about media, (yes sorry yet another media query!). I just bought another spindle of datawrite yellows, and they have changed. The disks themselves are slightly darker yellow and I beleive the dye is different (can anyone confirm this). Anyway, I'm using the updated firmware for my NEC 2500 and had been burning the older datawrite yellows at 8x without any problems. However, the new media will not burn at 8x without giving me problems. Now this isn't a huge problem, I can burn them at 4x, but still I couldn't quite understand why I was getting coasters with the allegedly 'improved' datawrites. Anyone had similar experience? Are datawrite yellows classed as branded Riek G04 dye disks?
Oh Scubapete, just wanted to thank you again for the hard drive thing. I think you were spot on, because since clearing some space, the copying is going much better. Never have I been on a forum to see the same member answer two different questions so comprehensively, you are the man :)

Howdy there OldCoot, Welcome to our little Club :D)
I suggest that you try a couple of free bees ? Here is the link, check the bottom of the page for exact directions and downloads for the newest programs.
Between the downloads and the setup time, you?ll have a backup in about 1, ½ hours. The next time will be cut in half or better depending on your system. I do a backup in about 32 minutes including editing :-)

A quick question on the media. I have been out looking for the "Branded Verbatim DVD+RW". Not exactly sure what the Branded means found Verbatim but did not say Branded. I know I can order but have just puchased Nero 6 Ultra and am fixing to download ANY DVD and want to get started. Thanks for any help in clearing this up.

daletom, branded means it is stamped on the disc as compared to being blank. You can download a little freebie software called dvd info pro, it will tell you exactly what you have, not just discs but other stuff too, drive, read errors, etc. You can get ritekG04's at meritline for .69-.71ea./100 with free shipping. Even crappy discs don't sell that cheap. Never had a problem with this disc. BTW, Hey pete, ain't seen ya in a while, how ya been?
