I did the update with the 1.9g on my WiiKey. Then I updated with the SMG disc. Everything worked fine. I played for a few hours. Then I played another game (i forget which). I go back to SMG and it says invalid media or something. I redo the update with the 1.9g and it worked again.
However, my brainage refuses to work now. Also, my retail version of GHIII didn't work at first. Then I rebooted and that disc worked.
What are peoples experiences with other backups\retail games after doing this update.
BTW, my software version still says 3.0u not 3.1u

Pal Wii (launch) 2.1E 1.9g Wiikey.
Wiikey update went without problems, updated from 1.0 straight to 1.9g.
Config disc 1.3 worked also. Did the Metroid 3 unplug trick for the Regionfrii-copy and then ran the brickblocked copy which works great. No semi-brick or double channels for me and I'm still running on 2.1E firmware.

Would anyone who uses PAL please confirm that SMG NTSC (English) works with the PAL unit?
I have updated mine to PAL 3.1E, with Wiikey 1.9g.
Thank you in advance.

Toonz1: I experienced the exact same thing. After looking at the icon which was registering nothing for a little while, I decided to click it. It immediately wanted to update my Wii. I let the update run, and then it hung right before finishing the update. I let the system stay on for 12 hours, after which I gave up and ejected the disc. I got a "failure to update" message, and when I tried to do the update again, the system would immediately give me a "read error" upon clicking on the disc channel.
Perhaps since the system partially installed the update, it won't let me run it again?

You can let the update run for couple of seconds and unplug your power cord. Then just insert the brickblocked-copy of the game. If you don't want to do that, you can just wait for the Pal version. It worked for me + many others.

Hi Guys
I've downloaded and burned SMG, but have not updated my firmware with it yet as i don't know what mod chip i have.
I presume it is a wiikey, as the Wii was bought for me from Hong Kong this summer, and 20+ iso games have worked so far. However, does anyone know how i can confirm that i have a wiikey, so i can update to 1.9g and play SMG!
Or, do you think i should just download the wiikey update and try it out? consequently confirming that i have a wiikey, or could this potentially damage my chip/wii.
any help would be great as i'm desperate to this game!
Cheers
Ciyman

Search again its out there. it is also in a sticky thread in this forum.
I did a simple search of "powercord trick" as the key words and brought up a few links.

So this must be the craziest game ever. Either that or my DVD burner sucks. I first burned the game at 2x. That disc didn't work, and froze up during the update. I burned another disc, at 2x, which worked fine for the first couple levels... and then froze at the same point. I tiptoed out of the freeze up area, and that seemed to let me bypass the problem spot. Well, here I am again, now unable to even enter the level that I want to go to. I would just skip it, but I need the stars to advance. I have no choice but to re-burn (for a third time), but this time I chose to go 1x. My media doesn't officially support this speed, but I figure I will give it a go anyway. Oh, I was actually able to bypass the disc error one time, by ejecting and re-inserting the disc a few times. On the second level of that galaxy that trick stopped working though. So now I have my 1x disc. It works much better. No more disc errors... NOT! I end up getting another one at a new place. I now have the option to just skip that level, but I want to play it as it looks cool... so now I just swap between my 2x and 1x discs whenever the game freezes up. Luckily, this seems to work, as for whatever reason, the two discs have different problem areas. I hope that this method works throughout the game, or that the problem areas go away as I advance through the game.
So, the bottom line is, I thought I had major problems with my Wii. Turns out that it was just a bad burn. I suggest re-burning if you are having read errors. Use high quality discs, on a high quality drive, using a low recording speed. If you do this on your machine and still have problems, have a friend with a different rig burn a copy for you. For whatever reason, SMG is VERY tempermental about the quality of the backup. Hope my findings can help someone.
Oh, and FYI, I am using Taiyo Yudens, which when burned on my brother's computer work perfectly.

Are they the Budget Taiyo's or the Top Quality ones? I myself never actually liked Taiyo's, got a 50 pack of the quality ones and they where nothing but problems and they weren't compatible with all my devices. I switched to Prodisc Top Quality and they work @ 16x in everything I throw them in! Here is the list of devices
1) PS2 (Launch Day Model) for games and movies
2) PSTwo (New style) for games and movies
3) PS3 for movies
4) Xbox for games and movies
5) Xbox 360 for movies
6) Wii (Launch Day Model) for games
7) DVD Player (Old) for movies

In my experience, Fujifilm DVD-R 16X discs work great. I switched after trying to backup Warioware Smooth Moves and kept getting DREs. The Fujifilm discs work everytime on my Wii.
Great for DVD Movies too.

Media, Media, Media. If you can't get the game to run and are able to get to the SMG icon/click then you likely have a media issue. I though my update was bad and finally broke down and bought a spindle of 4 different vendors, sony, verbatim, HP and Memorex. The HP media worked burning at 8x speed DVD+R. I didn't believe it was a media issue since I have burned other games without issue, but apparently SMG is very, very picky about media and burn speed. Test it out yourself, you'll be suprised. I was!

No the Japanese version has the same protection as the North American version does. So you will need to update to the 1.9g update on the Wiikey.
