The speeds I'm getting are, 4KB/S download, and 3 KB/S upload. I have 576KB Broadband, and Shawdow BitTorrent (you no, the one with the lights). Is there anyway of speeding that up. I am running Windows 98.

Hello Dela, I hope you don't mind me giving you my information aswell.. as I seem to be having some difficulties.
I am currently running windows XP with service pack 1. The XP firewall is disabled, and this is a clean install. I am not running a router or any firewall software, as I want to get bittorrent working first.. than I will add security afterward.
Internet connection is a cable modem with 128k upload.
Here is the average download speed results of 10 tests from beeline.
Slowest - 87 K/s
Fastest - 152 K/s
Average - 132 K/s
Currently using ABC for my torrent client.
Current example.
My first torrent tends to download between 2 to 7Kb/s and uploads run 10 to 15Kb/s.
Torrent is green.
# of connected seeders 5(123)
# of connected peers 45(1050)
# of seeing copies 8.999
My second torrent is green and runs 0 to 1.2Kb/s and uploads run 1 to 2.5 Kb/s.
# of connected seeders 4(9)
# of connected peers 31(74)
# of seeing copies 3.998
any help would be greatly appreciated. If there is information I have left out that can be useful, please let me know.

Ok, well the problem doesnt seem to be your connection anyways! How are you ISP with filesharers? have u heard anything about them limiting users or anything?

I know they are not looking kindly on file sharers, but have not noticed anything with other programs.
Cable service is insightbb.com.\
I do know that with 'bearshare' and 'direct connect' I can get speeds in excess of 100+k/s.
With 'mirc' I can reach higher speeds.
But torrents seem to be the best source for the torrents I am looking for, most of my torrents are 4 to 4.5 gig.
DO you think changing the port ranges to something similar used by these other p2p programs could help?
I am going to try it anyway just to see what happens.

Have you ever tried tweaking your Cable/Broadband connections? I've tweaked mine recently after I bought a new PC (because speeds on my new PC were a bit slower than my old PC)
It didn't seem to change the speed results, but everything seemed at least 30% faster.

Whoa whoa whoa.... one problem at a time? :)
Savimbi, I believe 50kbs for a 576kbs connection is pretty good. I have a 3MB connection and I get around 80.
I haven't used BT in around half a year, but those were the speeds I had last time I checked.
With your McAfee firewall, check what settings you have, it might restrict/restrain your speed on P2P programs.

You also might think about using a different BT Client. I used a few different ones before I got it to work (I used BitTorando, Shareaza, G3, and a couple of others). For some reason, I was getting horribly slow DL speeds until I switch to Azeures. Azeures is awesome because when you set it up, it runs a test to make sure you are getting proper speed with d/ls. you might check it out

Changing the ports did not seem to effect much, and I have applied every broadband tweak I cound find, I am going to try Azeures that deezp1 mentioned.
Savimbi, what bit torrent client ar eyou using? I have been using ABC. Most ISP's report speed in kilobits per second. ABC reports it in kilobytes per second. Since 8 bits = 1 byte, your speed in bits is around 400 kb/s. Your speed is pretty decent for your connection, I believe. Sorry if I over explained things, just trying to be clear, not trying to talk down to anyone.

Just to let you know, you can talk me down to the point where I'm level with the devil. :D
Anyway, I'm going to try Azurerus, and see if it does any wonders for me. Fingers Crossed. =)

Damn!! you're getting ripped off man, your speeds shud be in excess of 300kb/s at least. I have a 1MB connection and I manage higher than 80! Well, ive recently uncapped but that has nothing to do with it!

Well, I switched to Azeures and am getting better downloads. a 4 Gig file is now taking about 3 days instead of 12. My avg speed is around 25-50k with some bursts higher. Have a couple more questions.
1. Anyone have any experience with Yahoo DSL, or SBC dsl?
I am thinking of switching. as they are offering higher upload speeds.
2. My client is being constantly choked by peers, and is constantly choking peers. Is this normal? If not any suggestions on how I can rectify this?
3. Can simply switching clients really yield that much of a difference?
Thanks for any insight.

Azureus (<--- I wasted 5 minutes of my time on Google trying to find the right spelling LOL)
Is a great client. I recommend you all switch to it. I have seen huge performance boosts in the first 2 minutes by around 50-200kbs compared to the offical BT Client. (when I was awake, I download mostly when I'm snoring)
As stated above, by deezp1, it also checks to make sure your computer and settings are good to go for BTing.

Oh sorry, I didn't realise you posted Sauhm.
My answers to those questions:-
1. Yahoo DSL is the WRONG way to go. It's like AOL. I haven't heard many good things about SBC DSL, but I haven't heard many bad things either. Why don't you try Cable instead. Cable seems to yield much faster speeds if you're in a good area.
2. Not sure what you mean by choke, but if you mean your downloads drop by 10-25 kbs suddenly and then jumps back, that's normal, it's probably a peer not sharing the file anymore and he was a big uploader.
3. As stated in my above post, yes.
Hope this helps!

OOPS!! Sorry, but Im glad in the end it was worth it. Im glad everyone is getting the same results as far as getting increased speed like I did. It shows that this client is not a fluck!

Toiletman, I am currently running a cable modem with 128k upload. My uploads max at about 70 kbs, but averabge 25-35 kbs. So I think my upload is being limited by my lower upload bandwith. That is why I was looking into the newer 384k upload dsl lines. I have a fresh windows xp install running with no firewall at the moment just to get the BitTorrent client straightened out. just never seem to get the 100+ kb/s I see others talking about.
Are you running cable? And if so, what is your bandwith specs? If you don't mind me asking..

@Sauhm, So I think my upload is being limited by my lower upload bandwith.??? did u mean your download is being limited on BT by lower upload bandwidth??
Also, I would also agree to stay away from Yahoo DSL, stay away from DSL altogether and get a cable service if possible! Cable is better and easier to mess with lol

Er... yeah. thats what I meant, my download may be limited by my slower upload. I keep being choked by other clients. Was just curious if having faster upload speeds would eliminate some of the peer choking that seems to be going on.
I current have a 128k upload with my cable modem, and can upgrade to a 384k upload. Do you think that would make much of an impact on my download speeds?

Please guys, one problem at a time.
Sauhm, I don't even upload at 30kbs or more :) I upload at 25kbs constant.
Anyway, I would recommend you give Azureus a try, if you haven't already.
