I've noticed some interesting changes. For instance after Shrink has scanned the disc and you?ve made your choices and then hit backup, a window pops up with some interesting options such as quality settings. You can not only check it to perform a 2 pass deep analysis but if you check "compress video with high quality adaptive error compensation,? you get a pull down menu with some choices that allow you to adjust from smooth (soft?} to varying degrees of sharpness. What a great idea I can't wait to give it a try.

Sophocles, as far as transcoders go, I really think dvdshrink has nailed it this time. :)

A highly requested feature has also finally been added: replacing a title by a "Still Image" in Full-Disc mode. :D

Thanks, I was hoping you'd fill me in some of the things I might have missed. I'll look into that as well. Does this mean it's possible to do some editing and still keep the menus?

Well, if by editing you mean replacing titles with an image in Full-Disc mode the answer is yes. ;)

This fixed image will stay on-screen for the duration of the original title, but can be skipped using your remote control (as you would with the original title).
This may not be as thorough as totally removing the title, but it has the advantage of leaving the DVD structure intact (less chances of problems with some DVDs and set-top players).

Does this mean that if we want only the movie and menus we can change the extras to be just a still picture which will leave more more room for the movie?

Well, I'm going away on Tuesday for a couple of weeks, so it will be around mid-August at the earliest.

In terms of fuctionality, v3.2 is almost identical to v3.1.7 though, and the "Help" section covers the new quality options very well. ;)

Well can't wait to see what my backup of Toy Story 2 will look like. Because the original had option for both full screen and wide screen the compression ratio is like 51%. Under the Quality settings check off the deep analysis and went with the default settings of Sharpness. The deep analysis went through in about an hour and 20 minutes which is normal the encoding took about 4 hours which is twice as long. I did select to create an iso and burn with dvd decryptor, which worked fine. Had to leave to work before it finished can't wait to get home and see what backup looks like.
One question I have is when you select to replace title with a still image how do you tell shrink what image to use?

Looking forward to hear your test results, blimpe. :)

"One question I have is when you select to replace title with a still image how do you tell shrink what image to use?"

Simply click on the "Browse" button that appears when you choose "Still Image" as the compression setting, and select the image. ;)

blimpe, I must admit the main bulk of my v3.2.0.15 tests was done with LOTR-FOTR, at a compression ratio of 64.2%.

My main goal was to compare the different new quality settings with each others and IC8.

The results were highly satisfying.

"Maximum Sharpness" did look for all intents and purposes almost identical to the original in the majority of the scenes, but tended to introduce some noticeable "macroblocks" in a few.
"Maximum Smoothness" did a very good job in these problematic scenes, but was overal not as close to the original.
"Sharp" and "Smooth" were the best compromises.

Ultimately, your choice of setting will have to be made depending on the original title, your viewing equipment, but also what compromises you're willing to make. ;)

Very well done! My first encode looks fantastic! Congrats to you, your team, and Mr. Shrink.

I am curious about the new features vs. some that were in beta? In beta there were P and B options. Do these relate directly to any of the new settings?

Thanks for the positive feedback, Doc409. :)
Would you mind letting me know how your first encode compares to backups you've made with other softwares?

The options found in the latest betas do relate to the new quality options.
However, they were modified, tweaked and optimised in various ways, then integrated to more complex algorithms.

Yes, I'll definitely provide something "objective" when there is something useful there. I did have some other beta test results that were ready to go, but things moved too fast to make them useful at this point.

Also, I am still working on the Ben Hur clips, and may try to include some Shink encodes with that. If I can still be of help, please don't hesitate to PM me.

Thanks, Doc409, but v3.2 has been released and beta-testing is now over.
Your offer to help is appreciated but no longer needed. :)

However, I'd be interested in reading any objective tests you can provide. ;)

I`ve just done a test back up of Double Jeopardy and did full disk with deep analysis and quality set on Extra Sharp. Movie copression was 65% and the resulting back up is indistinguishible from the original. Amazing, you have to look very hard to tell the back up from the original. Version 3.2 rocks.

Sophocles, the quality settings were tweaked and improved after more tests were performed (some quite late in the beta-testing process).
The new interface reflects these changes, and allows for a balanced range of options. ;)

WOW! I downloaded the new versions of DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter on Monday and spent most of Tuesday playing with them. What a great combination! You rip to the HD with DVD Shrink and with one click you can burn to DVDR with DVD Decrypter. There is absolutely no reason for a newbie to buy any DVD backup software anymore!

Thanks for making such a powerful combination available to me!
