Bought a PS2 cheap from a cash generator store here in the UK, with the intention of installing a modchip (modbo 4.0)
Before anyone asks, I wanted to do this purely to see if I could. I am aware that there are software methods of booting backups etc.
Anyway, I installed the chip fine, installed a neo fix xiii to prevent the laser from killing itself, and all seemed well.
So I try out a PS2 backup (Resident Evil Outbreak) boots fine, gets to the "Now Loading" screen, and just hangs. I read about this problem on various forums etc, and apparently it was thought to be the laser not getting enough power to read the disc or something...
Anyway, I read that adjusting the potentiometer for DVD discs, would help the laser read the disc better. So I turn the DVD "pot" clockwise just a tad, throw the game back in, and low and behold, it boots up fine. Great. Except it's still not perfect. I got the occasional stutter and freeze ingame, but nothing major.
So I decide to do the stupid thing, and adjust the "pot" further, thinking it would give even better results... Wrong. I believe I killed the laser, as it wont read DVD's, or CD's.
The disc attempts to spin, and the laser moves upwards, and the drops back down, all within the space of a second. It repeats this about 5 times, before simply spinning the disc slowly, and doing nothing else.
I just thought I would share this with you all, as some of you might know how to fix this. I've bought a replacement laser, as they are pretty cheap, so its not a big deal, but if anyone has any advice to give me, it would be greatly welcomed.
