I'm actually quite confused about this. After searching around, I found out that Memorex DVDs might not be the best option in terms of keeping the PS2's laser relatively healthy. I have a Silver Slim PS2 that I have been using for imports since December 2006 and it has worked rather well so far. However, today I'm a little confused.
- The PS2 boots up normal discs, whether NTSC or Japanese Import, with no problem or struggle.
- The PS2 boots up some of my backed up games with no problem, but I cannot tell what brand those DVDs are (They have yellow light-scribe surfaces).
- While it did not do so early this morning, the PS2 can read all of my old Memorex DVD+R discs after I cleaned the lens.
But the problem is that my PS2 CANNOT play these Memorex Printable DVD-Rs that I bought back in September. I don't really use my back-ups that often, and the games I used with these DVD-Rs was the translation patches for Final Fantasy XII International and Front Mission 5. Front Mission 5 started jugging out of the blue today, and promptly froze up. Alternatively, the PS2 reads my legit copy of Front Mission 5 well and it also reads a previous patched version on my Memorex DVD+R well enough. I tried re-burning these two games on these DVD-Rs on different speeds and different programs, but the PS2 simply will not accept these discs.
Is this foreshadowing a larger PS2 issue or did I simply get really bad DVD-Rs? Or is this just a case of Memorex DVDs burning out earlier than expected? Any help or advice would be appreciated.
sounds like your laser is going bad. i suggest you start looking for places that sell replacement lasers for slimline ps2. Ebay is a good start. Besides that, like Cybertick suggested, you stop using memorex media altogether, use verbatin dvd-r, they are not that expensive and will keep your laser from dyeing.
