i have backed up some games that i own for my ps2, i currently have 2 ps2s and i'm having a problem with one, i softmoded both so i can play my backups and keep my originals nice and safe, but one of the ps2s will not read my backups, i've tried verbatim + and - r dvds but neither seem to work they just come up with disc read errors, at first this ps2 wouldn't read any discs, but i cleaned it and now it will read all but my burnt discs, the strange thing is that i'm almost certain that at some point down the line it did read at least one of them. i'm just wondering if there is a possible sollution, one thing i did notice about this ps2 was that the warrenty sticker was not on, and since i got it second hand it could have a mod chip in it, so in that line i'm wondering how to tell if it has a mod chip. any sugestions are much apreaciated.

They could have used a Swap Magic Disk instead of a MOD Chip, are the sensors blocked?

umm.. i'm quite a bit of a newbie to this, what do you mean by the sensors being blocked? also if they used swap magic how would that affect the waranty sticker, do you actualy have to open the ps2 to use swap magic?

The only way to tell if a mod chip is installed, is to take it apart and look at the motherboard.
Is it a slim or FAT PS2.

When you look at the mobo, you will see if there is a modchip on it or not.
Just use youtube to look at examples of modchip installations or at ps2 disassembly.

ok i've checked it and no there is no mod chip so i don't know why the waranty sticker was off. so that rules that out. now i'm out of ideas, is there a chance that some models of the fat ps2 simply won't read burnt dvds?

Ok then, so what type of softmod are you using? PS1 exploit, fmcb 1.8?
Which program are you using to swap disks with?

i'm using fmcb 1.8 using the ps1 disc exploit, i use esr beta r9b to play my backups, i have properly patched the backups with the esr patcher, and they work on one ps2. i moded both ps2 systems at the same time with the same prog so i don't think it can be the mod, plus i've tried taking the mem card out and starting the ps2 normaly and it still gets disc read error in the browser. but on the other ps2 it always shows up as a dvd video in the browser. oh and i'm not using any swap disc programs

I had a similar problem and I moved the lens up a little bit by moving the little white cog on the laser assembly. btw, you think the warranty sticker could have been removed so they could clean the lens? D.R.E. were a notorious problem for ps2 back in the day. ppl think the rrod was a big deal, ps2 had some shitty construction on a few versions

ya i actualy did mess around with that gear and tried in almost every spot as i found the tutorial on trying to fix d.r.e and no matter where i set it i still get the error, i'm hoping that the warranty sticker was removed for a simple cleaning. and when i do put the burnt dvd in, it does spin it for a bit, then stops, you can hear something else spinning a bit then starts spinning the disc again, it does this several times, so it kinda seems like it's adjusting the lense on it's own.

hey just an update on it i did finaly get it to work, i used verbatim dvd -r inkjet printable dvds it seams that anything with a shiny silver surface won't read in this one, i'm trying some other dvds at the moment but best guess is the non reflective surface seams to work, unfourtunatly i'm finding that style of dvd is fricken hard to come by. but at least it works

i hate to revive a thread but i'm getting the problem again, it seams that only one game that i burnt actualy worked, ffxII, every other one that i've tried in this ps2 get the disc read error, the ps2 still reads all my regular discs, and my ffxII backup, but any of the new ones i've tried, (using the same discs) come up with the disc read error. seems very odd. i've tried burning at 2.4x and 4x with the same problem, this frigin thing has a mind of it's own or something. if anyone has had this problem or has any idea's i'm open to sujestions, thanks

What Version PS2 is this one?
the laser is obviously a picky one. Its good it can read Original though. So its just backups your having a problem with.
You may have to try and find a different brand of media too use.
Can you buy Sony DVD-R

i'm not sure of the version, i'll post it soon, see i sold it once i thought i had it working, but i got called by the person who bought it who told me they couldn't get any of the other discs to work in it, so there bringing it back, i'll post the model as soon as i've got it, as for dvd's i've tried quite a few diff types, sony + and - verbatim +,- memorex, staples brand(which i'm prety sure is just memorex, maxel and ridata. and the only one that ever worked was the verbatim -r inkjet printable, but only the one ffxII copy has worked, i'm wondering if maybe ffxII has something to do with it, i'm not sure if the other games are newer or not but could it be that newer games wouldn't work?, once i get it back i'll try ffx or ffx-2 and see if one of those will run, (those are the only games i have that i am certain would be older than ffxII)

Ok no problem.
Any backup should work if the laser is in good condition.
