One of my friends sons bought an i3 laptop and when I showed him what the laptop does he said his son had problems with his too but thought it was the i3 processor just being slow so he bought an i7 which he liked more but still shows some of the power savings nonsense. I've also seen this on my Shuttle but I must say that on that system the mainboard is part of the problem, Shuttle's have never used great products.
At any rate you can believe what you want I know what I know and it isn't BS no matter what ARPANET or you thinks. Also I have a friend in the Luther organization, part of their help desk, that would also go with what I'm saying about Intel's he has a i7 laptop as well and wasn't as impressed like his boss was over Intel he has now gone back to AMD and doesn't wast his time and money.
Hey if you think they are great and want to spend the extra money knock yourself out, to each his own I just don't buy it, all that matters though is that you are happy with your choices, I certainly am with mine most of the time even though I have my i5 and should have gave it to my daughter instead of the A6 she got and loves.

Rich, her name is Christa, and she plays video games haha. Lately I've been giving her Skyrim help :D I won't go into any more detail than that as a courtesy both to her and to other forum goers. Maybe more to know at a later time :P
As for Assassins Creed III, I'm not really sure what to say. It performs pretty decently for me on the whole. I'll have to go play some more before I can give you an average. Assassin's Creed 2 ran quite well.
Assassin's Creed 1 has badly bugged performance. You basically can't play it without hilarious amounts of AMD graphical horsepower or an Nvidia card. The ancient 8800GTS runs it better than either single or Crossfire 6850s. Perhaps AC3 is one of those cases as I see other forums are reporting similar inconsistency. Guys with single HD4670s running it fine but others with GTX690s and the like barely managing the teens.
All I can say is get the latest drivers and CAPs.
Mr Movies, whether or not Intel is a faster product is not up for debate. It's much faster, period. The fact that AMD remains a far better value has nothing to do with raw performance. It's simply not a matter of opinion. I have done plenty of real-world testing on my own that shows Intel's superiority by a wide margin. Not other peoples' testing in synthetic benchmarks. My own, in my own benchmarks. Intel slaps AMD silly in that regard. Value-wise... well there's a reason I run AMD hardware.

No pun intended on the Skyrim I take it? LOL good one Jeff.... That game must of been streamlined for the 8800GTS sounds like. I think I want to play around with Christa too, doesn't that sound funny? :D Rich, That is a pretty cool/sweet game setup I may have to screw around with that one and either get a 360 controller and/or try to get comfortable with playing in mouse mode, which I hate personally. There are some other games I mean to play then and I suppose I should look at getting an add-on video card as well.
Real nice job Harvard!
Got my last two golf clubs done and boy are they nice, a UST VTS 7TX Tour shaft with a Acer Leggera 9.5 degree head for my new 300+ yard Driver, plus a Appolo Cooper shaft with a Sand Blaster 52 degree head for a new Sand Wedge. Now if my back holds out, which is questionable, I should have a fun two day tournament at Madden's on Gull Lake: Pine Beach East.
Now off to work then laundry, fix one of the trophy's, pack the cooler, finish ripping a couple of Blu-rays and maybe some sleep before my morning tee time in Brainerd, MN for the start of our spring tourney.
Have a great weekend guys,
Stevo

Indeed very heavily Nvidia biased considering the HD6850s are about twice as fast as the 8800GTS. Poorly optimised for non-Nvidia cards.

Haaaaa watch it there old man. You're as bad as my dad :P Be aware that she is my girlfriend, not just an interest :)

A simple entry-level to mid-range video card that can at least get you into games isn't too expensive. <$100 will have you playing the majority of titles out there without much issue. As far as mouse vs keyboard... you know my views on that. I certainly can't argue with your preferences but be warned that only using a controller limits your choice in games. A good many of them simply just aren't suitable for a gamepad. I do agree, however, that a much larger percentage of them should have proper gamepad support.
Good luck on your golf outing. One of my good friends is very into golf but has had some unfortunate limitations placed on him due to back surgery. Will be another year before the poor guy can perform a proper swing. He's pretty bummed.

There are some applications that don't support it (HDDLed Indicator and uTorrent, to name a couple) but on the whole not too many. The main reason for me getting it was being able to pay £75 for three legitimate windows licenses. Now they're £200 each, I shan't be buying any more, and I have installed one additional copy since. I'll leave how to your imagination ;)
Unless I misinterpreted your English, you seem to think that Utorrent is not compatible with Windows 8. I read some info on their site, and 3.2.2 is supposed to address that compatibility :) And there's been a few releases since then.
I really would like to try windows 8 again. But I have some serious hard drive organizing to do. I'm trying to dump/burn/delete data from 2 of my 2Tb drives, so I can sell them, and purchase either 2 3Tb drives, or a single 4Tb. Not sure yet.
To delete, or not to delete. THAT is the question!

That's correct, only up to the last of version 2 are incompatible with Windows 8. However, try using utorrent 3 without wanting to smash something up. Few applications can make me that angry, that quickly!

I believe Vuze to be compatible with win8, but find that just as hateful to use. Azureus becoming Vuze was the reason I switched to solely using utorrent. As for now, people are recommending I try qbittorrent but I haven't got round to it yet as 95% of my torrents are run on a linux seedbox with rtorrent.

Thanks Jeff I will.
I've been using FDM for Torrents on Windows 8 and I've not run into any issues the little I did with one of my buddies Netbooks. Everything operated as it should and I even seeded for awhile.
Even if you use a tunnel (VPN) you still have the trackers and seeds shared so no you wouldn't be safe if you are using it for hacked stuff.
Well time to get ready for the outing and a nap before tee time.
See ya in a couple,
Stevo

Haha hate to say it but every single thing I predicted since 2008 has come to pass. It's happened exactly as I said it. Our leadership is a joke.
PeerBlock and uTorrent for me. Only ever received a single cease and desist, which was for a freely distributed patch for Skyrim.
After being informed of the issue(I am a paying customer with multiple boxed and digital versions of most of their games, UPC codes provided for proof of purchase)Bethesda was actually kind enough to write a notification to my ISP and to Zenimax informing them that they just tried to flag me for downloading something that was free for an entirely innocent purpose. It was for modding. You know, that thing Bethesda officially supports? I own a valid license for the game, I have a right to access the patches and DLC I paid for.
That was an interesting ordeal. I would have understood if they caught me downloading a paid DLC, but it was not.

Their laws are rather sketchy. I got a cease and desist for downloading a tv show. I actually replied to the email!!! I more or less told them, "I'm sorry. I forgot to set my DVR that night! I do pay for the station!" Why would I stream a bad copy from their website, when I can download a much higher quality file.
I think they're more concerned with Uploaders, than downloaders though.

Hi Fred - they don't. The "start button" does the same thing the start button on the charms bar does now. It does not give you a start menu that does anything useful, as per Windows 7 and prior versions.

Well, after the PC component store I used to visit in london entered liquidation, I'm now back to ordering things online. Since we currently have no means of accepting deliveries at work, I thought I'd try out the UK's iterations of delivery drop boxes. Here goes - maybe should have started with something less valuable than a £360 disk controller!

Well, good luck Sam on getting that disk controller. I hope you enjoyed your golf outing, Stevo.
So, Jeff, Christa is her name - and she plays video games too! Great! Always nice to have things in common, especially really important things - like VIDEO GAMES!!! (And I'm not joking.) Next you need to take her out on the rifle range.
One time some years back I recall reading that the world's best CS player at the time was a girl - she had twitch reflexes and was a true Annie Oakley - she would roam around the map killing anything suspicious.
I interviewed a girl to be an assistant one time (I always employed high school honors students) who was just as addicted to CS as I was at the time. Needless to say she had the job - but she had borrowed her parents' car for the interview - and she for some strange reason had a bit of a hard time finding the office. So she had parked the thing outside our giant free parking lot in a street parking area that had limited parking.
After the interview wherein we mostly talked about Counter Strike, I drove her to her car and there was no car.
So I drove her home, and she called the next day and said she was in trouble, and that she was not allowed to take any job at this time. (The car had been towed and it cost her folks a couple hundred to get it back.) I guess it was just as well, because while she was a great CS player with a 1:1 KTD ratio, she obviously lacked common sense, hahahaha.
Jeff, I took your advice on Assassins Creed III and made sure I had the latest drivers - for some reason I thought it was an older game, but it came out only about 8 months ago, at the time I last installed drivers. Anyway, the new non-beta are 13.4 - so as of April - and I'm still not getting super great fps, but passable - I only notice lagging a few times. (But I'm not in snow anymore, so we'll see what happens later.)
Before I start complaining, let me say that this is another "astonishing" game - the horse riding is superb, the countryside is absolutely gorgeous. I thought Far Cry 3 was a pretty game - mostly I loved the water reflections - but this game is far prettier.
For another thing, the naval encounters are stupendous. I apologize for this one single screenie - I was too busy trying not to get sunk. If you look at my mini-map, that one guy approaching from my port (left) front side - the little boat with the red circle meaning enemy - is but one of about a dozen enemies - all the red are toward the front starboard side, or directly starboard. Once I learned about the pause menu dna button, I went back and played an earlier naval battle, but this one was far harder, since one of the ships was almost as big as mine, almost as fast, and had just as many cannons as I had.
I have sailed from time to time, being a member of a sailing club in Newport Harbor for several years - it's a small monthly fee and then you pay when you charter a boat. I like to sail a 30 footer - they are cheaper than the 36' boats, but just as much fun - you have a nice several-ton chunk of beautiful wood under your control. But in the game it's a 120' sloop, and it totally feels realistic - the movements are very authentic, and you can call for half sails to make faster turns, or full sail to mostly outrun the other boats.
Lining up the ship to shoot a broadside of cannon shot is tricky - I still haven't gotten that one right - and then with the right-mouse button you can shoot the swivel cannon which is good for smaller, like the one heading toward me in this screenie.
Most of the google tips, by the way Stevo, including the most helpful of all, are for using a controller - since the game is ported to every device known to mankind, including cell phones, lol. So if you prefer controller over mouse and keyboard, this might be the game for you.
The graphics everywhere are mind-blowing. The townspeople are always doing something to make the game seem more real, and the animal animations are first rate, including the hawks and eagles, plus also butterflies, rabbits, deer, except possibly for the bears which are done better in Far Cry 3 - but I usually stay well clear of them anyway.
I will say, that this game badly needs a hint system. Or maybe I'm just a dummie. I'm reminded of the trouble that Kevin had in the Far Cry 3 menus - but in my case I just ignored all the troublesome icons and played along without knowing what I was doing, haha. But it made the game much harder for me than it needed to be.
For example, I first ran out of arrows doing my little hunting bit, and played about 10 hours without any arrows, wondering when the game was going to give me some more - meaning I had no range weapon at all - and the whole time I wondered why the game was so goddamn difficult. (I passed wagon after wagon and never knew they were a store.)
I also didn't know about holding the right mouse and the left mouse at the same time, to activate the "killing frenzy" mode - so I was astonished at how badly my player fought (making me feel like I was back in Sleeping Dogs getting my karate ass kicked.) I ended up having to escape most of the time and rely on the drop assassination on a one by one basis. (That is really cool by the way - like Max Payne bullet time - but it's a short slow-motion QTE that always results in one dead guy.) However, the one-by one drop method takes a long time, with much greater chance of being involved in one-on-one fights where my guy isn't so great a fighter, versus charging right in and killing 5 guys in a row.
SO WHAT I'M TRYING TO SAY IS, DON'T BE A DUMMIE - GO READ SOME TIPS OR YOU MIGHT NOT LIKE THE GAME!
I finally found the journal and read through most of it - that was after doing some google research - like the 10 most important tips. Interestingly, there was only passing mention of the travelling wagons. It isn't obvious that they are where you buy stuff.
How about a game tip such as "Jump on top of a caravan wagon - you can buy or sell without being at a general store." I discovered that by accident.
There are no game tips. I'm going to write ubi support and make the tip suggestion. Of course, they've sold 55 million of the franchise, so they have the right to tell me where to stick my "tip" idea, but I think I have a point. LOL
Rich
