One of the most prevalent problems is that as time passes, the laser eye in the PS2 develops something like "myopia", i.e. its distance to the disc on the tray needs to be adjusted. Some older fat PS2's have a gear (a white wheel with cogs) that you can turn to adjust this "average" distance, and mitigate the disc read error.

I say mitigate because eventually the laser eye will become so degraded that even with maximum adjustment it will not be able to focus on the disc.

This guide is what I relied on a while back, but part of the page seems now corrupted:

A more sophisticated adjustment of the potentiometers is at:

Last two options, AFAIK, are:

1) Unplug and replug the ribbon cable that goes from motherboard to laser eye. This is to check whether there is a bad contact due to the constant seek movement that pushes/pulls said cable. Be especially gentle with the cable, and be mindful of a clip that needs to be flipped-up in order to release the cable.

2) Buy a new laser eye.

BTW, you do know you can get a network adapter, install a PATA hard disk, use a PC to dump your original legally-owned games to ISO file, and transfer the game from PC to PS2's hard disk via network, and not need the optical drive, right?

Easiest procedure for you is:
1) Install "Free McBoot" (FMCB) hack on a memory card for PS2. Since your optical drive is dead, you need to find someone, anyone, who has already enabled homebrew on their PS2, to run the FMCB installer against your memory card. This FMCB cannot be copied from one card to another.
2) Boot your PS2 into FMCB, then run "OpenPS2Loader". This program is a one-stop-shop: it lets you format and manage the PATA hard disk, transfer games via network to the hard disk, and run games from hard disk.

The site "www.sksapps.com" has all these programs and their guides and tutorials.

Read the guide at
http://bootleg.sksapps.com/tutorials/fmcb/noobie.php

You will need to borrow/purchase one of the boot-strap discs/devices under the "installation" tab near the top of that guide.

You're welcome.
