I bought a second-hand PS2 that I already knew was faulty and I intend to fix it. The problem is an odd one. The PS2 plays DVDs and CDs fine, but not my sole game, Gran Turismo 4. I took the ps2 top cover off, and I ran a few discs to see what happened. The DVD and the CD play fine, and the laser stays in the one spot as the disc spins. With the game, the laser starts in the same place as the DVD and cd, but after about 15 seconds, it moves out a little, then another 5 seconds later, it moves a lot, about 2cm, and the disc slows down a little, and it makes a kind of vibrating noise. My other question is FreeMcBoot related. What's the best way for me to get it onto my memory card without buying any swapmagic or James bond games? Ie. for free.

OK, different issue now. When the disc makes the vibrating noise and stops reading, if I touch the disc enough to slow it down, the laser jumps back to the right spot. So pretty much, it works but it's very awkward to have to tap the disc all the time. If there are any fixes, let me know.

The vibration is likely due to seek failures: there is an "arm" that guides the laser eye closer-and-away from the center of the disc. That arm ends in a plastic piece that is SUPPOSED to hold onto a spinning rod with a spiral thread. When that plastic wears out, it no longer holds onto the rod, and can no longer move the arm accurately.

The fact that if you slow down the spinning of the disc (if that is what you were saying) the laser eye is able to move indicates that, while seek movement is still possible, it is not able to follow accurately a rapidly-spinning disc.

Ok, I'll look at fixing that. Thanks
