I had a 2600 Athlon XP, she would clock to 2.25gig. To be honest I did not see much difference, if any, in performance. I now have a 3200 barton. she is locked & she runs @ 2.21gig. the main difference is that the barton has 512 cache instead of 256. I am not sure it is really worth it, even if you could unlock.

I guess it all depends what you want to do with your PC. For gaming you only really need a 2.5gig. The thing that makes the difference is the graphics card.

PULSAR 2800+ BARTON HAS A 512 KB L2 CACHE (2.083MHZ) AND A 333MHZ FSB.

3200+ BARTON HAS 512KB L2 CACHE CLOCK AT 2.225MHZ BUT THEY INCREASE TO 400MHZ FSB EVERY REVIEW I READ SAID THE IMPROVEMENT IS WORTH IT!!!

Dr.xp, I was referring to MY 2600XP (333 FSB), not the 2800 Barton. The most I got my FSB to was 177 in order to keep it REASONABLY stable. I was, however, pushing my memory too much. When I overclocked, Far Cry would crash out regularly! I just kept it to 170, no probs. Now, of course, I have 400 memory (to match the default FSB of my Barton) & my FSB is @200
I still am not sure it is worth clocking to extremes. I just think it can make your system too unstable. Memory can be the key! I must admit it is fun seeing how much you can go to!
BTW, please do not type in caps, it is considered shouting & very rude around these parts!

Hi again Dr. XP and everyone,

Ok, have the new parts I talked about in a previous post. I left my signature the same so you could see what I had before. The new CPU and RAM are installed. I defaulted the bios before install. The new parts are as follows:
-AMD Athlon XP 3000+ "Barton", 400 FSB, 512K Cache Processor - OEM
-Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series, (Twin Pack) 184 Pin 1GB(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 - Retail

I played with some settings and I am curious what you recommend for new normal settings or OC'd settings.

Thanks again, I love reading the posts on this site.

i have a xp2600+ ive been tryin to overclock it now for a while but have been unsuccesful. my motherboard is pcchips i dont know the exact model as im at work. if i change the fsb over 175 then the pc will not boot at all not even to POST screen. i have 2x512mb of ddr400 ram so this should not be a problem. i dont think i can change the vcore on my motherboard which is probly the problem.

does anyone know of a way to change the vcore without using bios. or should i do a bios update or just buy a new motherboard?

HELLO petephil pchips are good mobos for day to day work!! overclocking depends on many things like your mobo chipset which is very important i belive pcchip mostly runs on SIS chipset.. depends on the exact model nforce 2 , and kt800 are better for overclocking.

vcore can only be change in bios (highly recommend) because there are some applications that can do so.

let us know your mobo model try using sisoftsandra aplication to get an id on your mobo.
or buy a new one if you wanna go for that i can recommend a few good mobos for overcloking.
and one last thing what heat sink fan are you using stock or ??

let me know..

To be frank, PC-Chips are a generic brand. Most of the time, the boards are already oc'd from them. Your 2600 is really an 1800duron oc'd to a 2600. They call them 2600pro+ boards. I know, because I used to sell them, and I used to get a mobo + chip for 100 bucks. Can't beat that for public selling. But you?ve got a board that is already oc'd to its max. You bought a cheap board meaning do you really have the money to oc that bad boy and fry it?

petephil aceprowl is correct but thatas not your case.
i think if you wanna have some fun with overclocking you should consider to get a new mobo.

Hey everyone,
I'm not new to hardware and software, like the bios, but i need some help with overclocking.

My specs are:
Athlon XP 2800+ 333
Asus A7N8X Deluxe
Zalman CNPS7000B-Cu CPU Cooler
512 MB DDR 400
80 GB Internal SATA
160 GB External
LG DVD Burner
SONY CDRW/DVD

Well anyways i have tried some stuff and i got it to run at 3000+ cpu but i wanna know if i can notch it up higher but keeping it stable.

And also any other way to improve my systems performance.

Much appreciated thank you.

rishi1 welcome
ok you got the hardware now what we need is to configure!!!

in bios:
1-fsb/ddr ratio set 1:1
2-vcore try 1.775volts
3-try lower memory timings like 2.5-3-3-6
4-memory config optimal
5-system config optimal
try fsb of 184

your cooler is great one so not much trouble with heat.

remember overclocking is to try and try until you get the higher but stable config... every system is different built your own xp

Well, chief, it looks like you've got the right kind of RAM and cooler. All you probably need to do is increase your fsb and multiplier. Since our motherboards probably have close to the same bios, just set your ram to match the speed of the fsb (after increasing fsb) and it should take the ram to 400, which is where it should be. I've got my frequency at 200 (which increases my bus speed to 400MHZ) and my multiplier is at 12.0. Mine runs stable at 2.4 ghz. Then again i have a volcano 12 heatsink and i dont know how that compares to your Zalman. I hear they're a good brand though. There are many ways to increase system performance but since this forum's on overclocking, i guess we may have to stick to that. The main thing for me, and this may be different to others is that a cool computer can be overclocked to what you want it to be. (FANS FANS FANS! or liquid)

I forgot. You also need to increase your vcore settings also. I have mine set to 1.7, 1.8 isnt recommended so try to stay under that. Normal vcore for the processors are like 1.6 or 1.65 so just a little increase should be sufficient. Let us know when you try.

haha thanks guys. but the dam zalman fan is so big that it was kind of difficult putting in cause of the capacitors being so close to the socket. but i managed to have like 3 mm of space between the heatsink and capicitors :) i was gonna cry if it didnt fit. spent 50$ just on that! but anyways thanks for config dr, and same to you kal. im gonna try tonight. if i dont post anything, youll know that i did something bad and going to put my warranty in use. :) thanks once again.

Looks like im not using my warranty!

Well that goes well ends well. I think thats how it goes, anyways i did overclock it nicely. Athlon Xp 2800+ to Athlon XP 3200+ very nice :) That means i must have an unlocked 2800+ because i could use multiplyers ithink 1 ~ 15 something like that. but i used 200 mhz fsb auto memory frequency, optimal system performance, and also 11.0 multiplyer. after 11.0 it just went down to like Athlon 850 mhz lol. and the vcore was 1.775. So thanks for everyones help! but dont worry im not just gonna get my answer and leave, i think ill help around here too!

Rishi101, that's good to hear, all to often people join, get the answer, then never return. When I joined I never would have tought that I would spend so much here! I have racked my brains at night thinking of how to cure problems! I am the type that if I do not know, I HAVE to find out, if it's the last thing I do!

I think I amy have helped 1 or 2 people along the way & added a tiny, tiny bit to this marvellous forum. I have learned loads & made lots of new friends. Altogether a good experience.
