Hi guys this is my first ever thread on this site.
just my two pence worth. I have the pioneer 108 with external enclosure and using usb2 with my laptop. it worked like a dream until last week when every movie i tried with all the latest Nero versions failed at 4x.I started reading your tips and (stay with me now i know i can go on a bit)experiences. one was to try firewire. i did just that and by golly it worked. i don't know if it will fail again but every copy so far is absolutely bloody marvellous. hope it works for some of you.

Don't get mad, if you don't know just say so.

Guys,

I don't think the power is the root cause of our trouble. As I commented above I have no problem at all when connecting the case to the computer with Firewire instead.

I only receive the error when connected by measn of USB and burning -R/RWs

i agree with this last post re power supply. i dont this this is the problem
if we isolate the problems its like this:

1. cannot burn dvd-r (i dont have a problem with -rw's or + r/rw's)
2. doesnt work with usb 2 external enclosures.
3. doesnt matter which software used.

i have tried 3 different types of external drives. i am also using a usb2 card plugged into my laptop because my laptop has only usb 1.1 but this doesnt seem to the prob for everyone.

just thought id recap

I think I just found something interesting.

I got my computer back, and therefore do not need to use the external case...

So I placed my DVD back into the computer, and found something interesting... Windows XP recognises my drive now as a ...

AXV CD/DVD-ROM SCSI CdRom Device....

This would explain why it thought that it was a SCSII device in the external case...

What I can only assume that has happened, is the external case has somehow flashed my DVD to make it beleive that it is a AXV SCSI drive, and no longer the SONY DVD-R that it is...

Now I have a new problem...as Nero does not recognize this drive as a dvd burner :S ....

Good luck to the rest of you with the external problem!!!

I got around to writing an email to tech support at Mad Dog. I told them about the error and that I couldn't return my Mad Dog MegaSTOR 7-in-1 DL 16x DVD+-R/RW (which I believe is actually a NEC 3500 drive) to CompUSA b/c it was past the 14 day return window and that they wouldn't take it anyway with the UPC removed for a rebate. They replied by asking for some more information and saying that they will send me an RMA to send the drive to them. Then they are supposed to send me a replacement a few days after that. Interesting enough, I've seen the same model of drive at CompUSA recently (I'd only bought mine there about a month ago). The drive pictured on the box now has a different enclosure than the one that I bought. My fingers are crossed that the replacement they send me has a newer, better enclosure that doesn't have this problem. I'll report back when I get the replacement.

In case anyone is interested in what I'm talking about, check out the differences b/w the old drive on Mad Dog's web site ( http://www.mdmm.com/products/optical/MegaSTOR7in1-16DL.asp ) and the new drive on CompUSA's web site ( http://www.compusa.com/adproducts/product_info.asp?product_code=315353&pfp=ADPRODUCTS )

I have been following this thread for a little while now. I have a Pioneer DVR-108 installed in an external Bytecc ME-340 USB 2.0 enclosure. I am also having trouble burning DVD-R discs with Nero 6.6.0.1.

I pulled the drive out of the enclosure yesterday and noted that the DVR-108 requires 5V 1.4A and 12V 0.9A, and the ME-340 supplies 5V 1.5A and 12V 1.8A, so I doubt that the power supply issue is causing my problems.

My first problems were due largely to the fact that I was burning ISO DVD-R discs that contained large numbers of small files located on a fragmented hard drive. I wound up burning them in 80-150MB sessions to that most of the files fit in the memory buffer set up by Nero. This worked OK, but I still got occasional "DVR-108/H2 T0" errors that everyone else seems to be getting and wound up with multiple 80-150MB dead tracks on my DVD-Rs. Luckily, this does not seem to affect the end product, except that I have 3GB out of 4.7GB on a disc due to the multiple failed tracks. This is still occurring and is getting pretty annoying due to the amount of time I am wasting in the process (I can live with the loss of space FWIW).

On friday night, I tried burning a DVD-Video ISO image for the first time (created using DVD Shrink 3.2). I ran Nero, opened the ISO image, and attempted to burn with all the options selected (Determine Max Speed, Simulation, Write, and Finalize). The speed test ran at above 12X, the simulation ran fine at 12X, but the burn failed very early in the process. It appears that I got up to the little "ring" near the center of the DVD-R disc. I did this two more times after turning off the external burner and unplugging/replugging the USB cables, as well as turning off USB power saving options in Device Manager. I think I even tried burning at 8X and maybe 6X. I also checked through my running processes for problem files I read about in previous posts but did not find any. I then read a post that mentioned getting a RW disc to avoid making any more coasters, so I ran out and bought a variety of them to try in the drive (DVD-RW, DVD+RW, and DVD+R for later). I put a DVD-RW disc in the drive and ran Nero again with my ISO image and it burned to disc on the first try at 2X (max speed of the -RW media I bought). It is a little disappointing that the simulation will succeed but the actual burn process dies -- my experience with Nero in the past was always that if the simulation worked (for CD-Rs) the burning worked.

I have not tried turning off the high compatibility mode yet. I can post a log file if anyone wants to look at one, but they look pretty similar to the others posted here and always end with the "DVR-108/H2 T0" and "SCSI command aborted" messages.

Any ideas or suggestions for other things I should try? Do Roxio or NTI programs allow simulations to be run? I had also tried some other DVD writing program that just went right into the burning process with no speed testing or simulations and it just failed during the burn process, so I really like being able to at least simulate first.

Can I do anything else with the failed DVD-Rs? It seems to me that I ought to be able to append sessions to the discs -- is there any software that can write a short lead-out at the end of the bad data that will allow me to use the rest of the disc?

One more quesiton: does Firewire definitely solve the problem? If so, I'll just buy a Firewire ME-340 and sell this one or use it for an external HDD.

Hi detroit54,

Firewire is very likely to work (much more so than USB, it appears), but perhaps the first thing you should try (if you haven't already) is to email Craig for the modified MMC.DLL file and install that. Look at page 6 of this thread for more details. This was what solved the problem for me (I'm only burning data DVDs though), and my setup is a DVR-108 in a Bytecc enclosure as well - ME-320U rather than ME-340 though.

If you try this and it fails it would be interesting if you could provide the following information: What chipset is in your enclosure? Simply open it and look at the black chip on the print board to find out. In mine it is an ALI M5621, and if you have the same and the MMC.DLL-solution doesn't work for you it would point to the USB controller (perhaps in association with Nero) in your desktop or laptop as the source of the problems, barring a bad batch of media or a bad USB cable or port.

Let us know what you find out.

Hi all

I'm facing the SCSI problem with an external DVD writer Iomega 12x USB 2. I use a Nforce chipset MOBO A7N8X deluxe.

Is the beta MMC.dll still available?
Could anyone mail it to me at scb@NOSPAMiol.it?

Thank you in advance.

Hi Folks,

I was getting the same error burning to CD-R Media, from a Pioneer 108 in a generic USB2.0 Case.

Shot Craig an E-mail & the beta mmc.dll file fixed up the problem.

Hope you guys have the same luck!

Cheers,

Alex

Well, I installed the MMC.DLL file per Craig's instructions and my first attempt at burning the ISO DVD-Video image at 12X on a DVD-R disc succeeded. This had failed twice previously for me on DVD-R media, then worked on DVD-RW. So far so good -- I'll post an update after I've had some time to test this further with data DVDs.

That's three Pioneer DVR-108s in external USB 2.0 enclosures that have benefited from this fix so far. Could this have anything to do with the DVR-108, or is it likely due to bad USB drivers in WinXP?

Hi guys,

Let me add my name to the list of people who are experiencing this same problem with Nero. Although, to be honest, my drive does not seem stable at all - there are even problems when reading CDs and DVDs - so it doesn't appear to be just a Nero issue for me.

I'm using the NEC 3500AG, with a newly-installed SumVision USB 2.0 Host Controller (USB 2.0 ports) and an ALI external case.

This evening I plan to ditch the external case - although originally I had really wanted to use one - and if there are no further problems after connecting the DVD writer internally, I'm going to stick with that & put it down to incompatability issues.

With all the trouble I've had so far with this drive externally I feel like I'm not getting anywhere near the performance levels it is capable of, so if it works well internally that is where it is staying!

Cheers,

EVH

I thought I too would add my problems here. I bought a Bytecc ME-340 U2 external enclosure, and put my HP dvd420i DVD writer in there. I cannot burn DVDs with any software (I have tried both Nero and alcohol 120% at speeds ranging from 1x to 8x). I set a request to Craig for mmc.dll, I'll report back if it helps. This is very annoying, seeing as Bytecc claims it to be compatible with DVD recorders. I sent an email to their tech support, but knowing two-bit companies like Bytecc, they probably won't respond.

Couple more things. The fate of the DVD disc depends on the program that I attempt to burn it with. When I burn in Alcohol 120%, the Burning fails, but does not ruin the DVD. When I attempt to record using Nero, it always fails (with the "reset occured" error), and creates me a shiny new coaster. I have two of those so far.

At least I'm not the only one haviong a problem, and good to see we are looking for solutions.

Cheers!

I took my pioneer dvr108 out of the external enclosure(ali chipset-junk) and installed internally. Burns perfect every time at full speed. I just purchased a new pci usb 2.0 card because the one i had also had the ali chipset and wouldn't even recognize the burner. The new usb card has a NEC chip set and recognized the burner but I still got the dreaded scsi message. I really think it has something to do with the ALI chipset that makes these external burners not work correctly. Installing the burner internally worked great for me. p.s. i have an external usb 2.0 enclosure for sale if anyone is interested :). Have a great day and good luck.

NEC 3500AG removed from external case, installed internally, now working at full speed with no errors.

Time to kick the external cases, folks. :(

Would love to ditch the external case EVH5150, if you can enlighten us laptop owners on how to fit a 5" drive into a 1" tick laptop!

My hopes are still with Craig. Hopefully he will drop the answer down the chimney in time for Christmas!

Hi
Ive been reading all of this thread and i pretty much have the exact same problem..
I get "SCSI Command Aborted" errors on every try

although i plan to, i havnt tried DVD+Rs
But this isnt neccisarrily a fix to the problem, the Drive is without a doubt "supposed" to write to all DVD media.

Im on an IBM Thinkpad t30 with a Lite-On DVRW-411S external USB drive (at usb 1.1)

When i frist tried Nero i was able to burn a data ISO.

After installing DVD X Copy and a couple other programs, i found that none would burn DVDs. When i went back and tried Nero, i found i could no longer burn DVDs, ISOs, or even Regular CD-Rs.

Ive updated the drives firmware, and im about at the point where i want to reformat. But right now i have so much on this drive that i cant reformat without getting some data off, and id really like the ability to burn DVDs (so i dont use 10 regular cds) before i reformat. If anyone has any advice or wants to know what ive tried, let me know.

Hi Guys,

I found that this worked for most people.

Please check your USB chip set on your motherboard.
The drivers may need to be updated.
If you goto in Start, control panel, Syetem, Hardware, Device manager you will see your USB devices. We have about 4 universal Host Controllers and One USB 2.0 Enhanced Host Controller. If you check the properties on each one and then the driver tab, you can see the version number of the drivers installed. Make sure each one shows the latest version for your motherboard chipset.
If you update your firmware and USB drivers then everything will work ok.

Well thank you Blade-uk

You just confirmed what I said a couple weeks ago that the USB driver on the motherboard needs to be updated.
I have 3 computers and two different USB enclosures which have worked without errors for two weeks now.
The drivers from Microsoft can be outdated by a couple months so you need to go to the manufacturer website for the latest motherboard USB drivers.
