Does anyone know if burning a +R DVD uses less current than burning a -R ?

they should be the same as -R

Hi all, new to thread but would like to share what worked for me. I purchased an NEC 3250A 16x dual layer burner, (excellent drive for 60 bucks by the way), and a Bytecc ME-340U2 enclosure. I got the infamous "SCSI ABORTED" error and my search brought me here. I have a Toshiba Satelite 5205 S705 laptop and the work around that worked for me was, I updated to Nero 6.6.0.6, unchecked DVD High Compatibility Mode and ran some simulations and all went well. I then tried a burn on Verbatum 8X DVD-R using DVD shrink(latest version). Encoding went well but when Shrink started Nero I got the error again.
I shut down shrink and opened Nero Burning Rom, navigated to the folded that held the ripped files and burned from there and it went perfect. burned the 8X media at 12X with no errors.(I know people say burning at high speeds causes errors but I haven't encountered any yet.) Have made 3 successful burns using this method and all is well. The Burns play on my stand alone DVD player as well. I realize it's not a perfect way to burn but it works and it's better than the 1X burner I have in my laptop. Only takes about 7 Min to burn the ripped files. I hope this helps someone and thank you all for helping me find a work around. I don't know what the difference between Shrink starting Nero as opposed to starting it myself is but if I find anything out I will be sure to post my findings here. Again thanks to you all.

I dunno if this information has been mentioned here, but everyone should check the power requirements of your DVD burners. My DVD burner (GSA-4163B) requires 5V @ 1.5A, and 12V @ 2.0A. The Bytecc ME series (ME-320U2F for example) and Nexstar external enclosures can only supply 5V @ 1.5A and 12V @ 1.8A... The underpowered supplies may well be the cause for the problems we encounter with our burners.

Not the answer for me. I used an external power supply but it changed nothing for me. It burns great in the enclosure, I just have to start Nero manually instead of letting shrink do it and it won't work in High Compatibility mode. A real head scratcher to say the least.

ZRT800 - I have the NEC 3500AG in a Bytecc enclosure (don't know which version) and I've tried turning off the campatibility mode and it still doesn't work. I'm running an OEM 6.3 version of Nero and so I can't get the latest Nero 6.6 yet. The other weird thing is that I can't burn CDs even. Can yours burn CDs? CDRWs?

Hey guys, I had EXACTLY the same problem as all of you, and after reading every single thread i could find, i played around with it myself and worked out a SOLUTION that WORKED for me.....here goes.....

It was as simple as right clicking the new drive in MY COMPUTER, selecting PROPERTIES, and making sure the feature for RECORDING was ticked, it wasnt, so i ticked it to make it a recordable drive and now it works smoooooth! DVDShrink latest version works sensational from start to finish.

I know this seems like an extremely simple and obvious thing to check for, but all i did was (1)Upgraded to the latest Nero & (2) Ticked recordable drive in properties for the external DVDRW drive.

Hope it gives some of you some help, cos it was really starting to piss me off just as much......simple solution.....works!!!

The powersupply issue may certainly be a variable here. If the DVD burner requires 5V @ 1.5A, and 12V @ 2.0A and The Bytecc ME series (ME-320U2F for example) and Nexstar external enclosures can only supply 5V @ 1.5A and 12V @ 1.8A then even with an external power supply (the enclosures come with one)the burner can't draw enough power from the supply. BTW, what's up with this server error causing duplicate and triplicate posts?

SOLUTION -

Step 1 - Upgrade to LATEST Nero from the Nero.com website.

Step 2 - Install Latest ForceASPI drivers.

Step 3 - Ensure RECORDING is ticked in the properties for the new drive, MY COMPUTER > right click new drive > RECORDING tab > make sure its ticked and enbled to record.

It worked for me. Goodluck.

rdpowell, great if that fixed your own probs, but there are peepl on this thread ho have used other OS's except the dreaded XP, like Linux etc. but can't remember if anyone without XP had the problem, this thread is too long to remember!. As for multiple posts it's probably due to the stability of this forum, i read that the site is due an upgrade as the kit can't keep up

If you want to use Nero to burn your cd/dvd's what worked for me was a clean install of xp with sp2, and Nero 6.6.0.3, without installing any other cd/dvd burning software, after installing alcohol or clone cd/dvd the same "scsi command aborted" error came back, either via usb or 1394, but the error would come out on both alcohol or Nero, I think you should take your pick and install only one. Not by reinstalling after uninstalling any the other one, but by making a clean install of xp w/sp2 and installing your cd/dvd burning software, in my case Nero 6.6.0.3 using a generic usb 2.0/1394 fw external enclosure with sony dvd-writer.

hi to you all the way from Manila. i don't experience the SCSI error you guys have, but i have the same problem that i can't write to any media (CDRW, DVD+-RW) using my writer Samsung TS-H552U if i use my USB2.0 PCMCIA CardBus (the burning process in Nero hangs at lead in part).

on reading (eg. extracting a DVD using DVD Decrypter), i get speeds as much as 9x as compared to 0.6x using USB1.1 built in my Sony VAIO laptop running Win2k Professional w/ SP4.

the writer is connected via a USB to IDE cable (this cable can do USB2.0) and the package includes a separate power supply for the IDE device.

the setup works, but slowly, if i use the built-in USB1.1 ports on the laptop. i definitely need USB2.0 speeds in CD/DVD writing.

i used the dell patch mentioned on page 14 of this thread, i unchecked the DVD compatibility in Nero (i use 6.6.0.6), tried another pcmcia slot, tried the other USB2 port in the card, all to no avail. i discounted the power issue mentioned here because as mentioned, my USB2 to IDE cable had a separate power supply meant to power the IDE device, whatever it is.

reading further, i chanced upon a solution that worked on my test just now, burning an SVCD on this same setup. its simple, and i never thought about it. this USB2.0 pcmcia cardbus has dual USB2 ports at the front, and in the middle there's a 5V socket, similar to this

a cable included in the package w/ a USB plug at one end and the other end a plug which is supposed to go in the above mentioned socket, similar to this (w/o the PS2 looking connector)

IS supposed to be used! immediately i tried this cable (which i was wondering for some time now its purpose) and it seems to get some power from your USB1.1 port to power or add to the power that is used by the USB2 pcmcia card.

after which, i was able to burn the SVCD (i went past the hanging lead in phase). however, i noticed the read buffer that Nero uses doesn't go less than 99% the whole burning time, and ONLY the buffer level of the writer fluctuates widely during the process. the video/data size being burned is 781MB/78mins, and is burned at 40x (6000 KB/s) speed on an 48x 700MB/80mins iomega CD-R, took 10 minutes 3 seconds to burn including leadin/out, which for me, is not the expected 40x burning speed on a USB2 link. moreover, Nero mentioned that "Buffer underrun error was avoided 270 times".

i'll do more testing to improve this process as time goes, but i hope my suggestion will help some of you guys.

Version Number: 6.6.0.3 Release Date: 11-29-2004
In some cases, the application did fail in writing to an attached USB recorder

Haven't tried this myself yet, but hope this is the fix.

The latest Nero version is 6.6.0.8 Release Date: 02-21-2005
http://ww2.nero.com/us/Nero_Express_6_Release_Notes.html#a1

Does anyone know if the latest update contains all previous updates? I sure hope so!!!

I had the same problem as listed. I have found out a way to get around the SCSI error.

If you use DVD Shrink to burn an image file you can use Alcohol 120% to burn the image file at full capability! It has worked for me. I know its not exactly what ppl want but if it works I'm not arguing

I bought a new external enclosure and i just received it this morning. It's the Kingwin KH-525UF-S. The Kingwin has the Oxford chipset. I'll do some tests with it tonight. So far, i've done tests with the ALi chipset and the Prolific chipset, and got poor results. The Kingwin has a 12V @2.5A (30W, which should provide enough power for my GSA-4163B burner.
