I received the same burner with my Dell Dimension 8400. It's not a bad burner, and writes Dual Layer Discs just fine at 2.4x, but the only turn off to me is it's inability to write DVD-R media.

You can find the manual here:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P75084/

I also purchased a Dell Dimension 8400 with the same burner in it. When I received it, I had a completely defective drive and had it swapped out. After receiving my new one, I experience the same issue where I am unable to burn on DVD-R/RWs. I purchased a DVD+RW and it works fine and plays in all of my DVD players, but it is a little bit frustrating considering it was misrepresentation of the product...

"1 W7065 ASSEMBLY, DVD+/-RW, 16X, HALF HEIGHT, PHILIPS, CHASSIS 2001"

I did contact dell regarding this issue, and here is what they had to say...

Thank you for contacting Dell Technical Support.

I understand that you are unable to open the DVD-RW and DVD-R. .I
apologize for the inconvenience caused by the issue and will ensure
speedy resolution.

The DVD drive that you have will not support burning DVD-R and DVD-RW
media. It will burn the DVD+RW,DVD+R, CD-R and CD-RW media.

For more information on the media types supported please visit the
following link. The title is: Specifications: Philips DVD8601 DVD+RW
Drive User's Guide

The link is:
http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/storage/P75084/en/specs.htm

Ironically, when you view this document, it shows the drive as "Philips DVD8601 DVD+RW," which to me is a case of false advertisement.

I contacted Dell about the same issue, regarding mine, and was given the same run around. I then asked for an RMA number so I could return the system (As I was within the 30 day satisfaction period) and was then offered a $500 credit to keep the system. I agreed, and went out and purchased a $90 Pioneer A-108. True to their word, Dell had issued a $500 Credit on my next Credit card statement, so I was happy.

Change your dvd by cross flashing your phillips dvd player to a benq 1620 then update that firmware to the lates. First follow links below and do it exactly,Then go to second link and upgrade to latest firmware.

I?ve got an update for you guys. About a week later I received $90 from Dell. About a week after that, I received another $90 because they apparently did not record anywhere that they had actually sent me any gift certificates. So if you have this drive in your system, milk Dell for what its worth!

Thanks
DO I understand it right from the information above that the specific drive (philips dvd8601) in the thread does not do well with - media.
Is that why you are specfically suggesting the +
what about speed how many x for the media and at what speed should they be burned at???
thanks

The phillips 8601 will not burn - dvd's/ but if you cross firmware it to the benq1620 as I stated above it will not only be able to burn - dvd r and -dvd rw it will also do dual layer and burn certain 8 x disks at 16x speed.

i read the forums all over again im not sure i under stand any thing

one guys says he bought a dvd+rw drive
and was lead to belive that it is a dvd+/- drive

if it was it would state that it is a dvd+/-drive

and as for better media + is always the way to go
it just better

but if your buner can only burn one type than thats what your stuck with

and burn speed should be as slow has you can stand
slower the better

but i have never had any proble burning at high speeds

WOW this is great stuff
Since the drive supports DVD+ and you guy recommend it over the other formats I guess I will leave it be and get +media

On this Conversion. Why would I want to do all of that
If + is the best and I can burn those why would I want to go though the trouble of doing it.
What does "cross flashing" mean?
WHat is "firmware"??

Sorry for the stupid questions but in a few weeks I'll answer the stupid ones here whiule you guys tackle the hard ones

Crossflashing is when a burner(the phillips 8601) can be cross flashed to then become a benq 1620. It's a little tricky but fairly easy. Once you cross flash then you update the firmware to the new burner. The advantage of this is like I stated earlier. I too (HAD) my burner as the phillips 8601 with the limitations of only burning + dvd's. After I crossed flashed, then my burner (became) the benq which allowed me to burn - dvd's and also at a higer speed rate. I'm burning fuji + & - 8x dvd's at 12 x speed using Nero. read my link above on how to cross flash.

I have successfully transformed my Philips DVD8601 into a Benq DW1620. Here's
what I did:

Obtain a copy of B5G9.zip which contains B5G9.exe, a Windows program to update the firmware of the Benq DW1600. This is available here - http://support.benq.com/files/storage/Firmware/DW1600/B5G9.zip

Use a Hex editor on B5G9.exe to change the checksum of B5A9 (the checksum of the original Benq DW1600) to 6D11 (the checksum of the firmware in the Philips 8601). Details of the edit are

Location: Original Value -> New Value
F390: 42 -> 36
F391: 35 -> 44
F392: 41 -> 31
F393: 39 -> 31

Run the edited B5G9.exe. It will apply its firmware modification to the Philips 8601, turning it into a Benq DW1600.

Obtain a copy of 1600-1620_B7K9.exe from the Benq Web site here:
http://dvdpro.club.st/firmware/BenQ_FW.htm#DW1620

Run this. It will update the Benq DW1600 to a Benq DW1620.

this thread started because we received a drive that was misslabeled. what me and a couple of the people at the way top did was jsut call dell up and get money because it was false advertisement. changing the firmware would probably void the warranty, so that is not worth it. also, why change the firmware if + media is the best?

updateing firmware from the companys site will not viod warr

but it sounds like crossflashing would viod warr
but i dont think they would even know

but you update firmware for upgrdes in quilty

i had to update my firmware to my new dvd burner
twice from the companys site

and for my wireless set up

so long as firmware is from the company it will not viod warr

but if your burner is working fine dont update firmware

and + is best but but changeing firmware would not make your burner burn -

as bill said crossflashing would make your +dvdr burn dvd-
but the only resone i see in making it do that is slightly cheaper media
