Hi- I've been burning dvd's for about a year now. I'm an experienced user, and a visual basic progammer in my real life, and I'm at a loss with my current issue.
I really need some help, I'm stumped, and throwing disc after disc away, here.
I use:
dvd shrink, decrypter, clonedvd, nero, etc.
This issue is with shrink, and I don't know if it applies to the other programs (yet).
SYSTEM: P4 / 768 RAM / 1.7 ghz /
Plextor 712 burner firmware 1.05 (never had an issue of any kind with it - about 4 coasters in its history out of more than 1000 dvd-R)
Havent changed media (all dvd-R, 8x burned at 4x) Prodisc F01 (with MCC media code) and Ritek G05's - can no longer burn either type of media.
I did try running a system restore point back to a few days ago, I havent tried yet to see if it helped, but I don't have high hopes.
ALL BURNS ERROR and fail to complete with shrink. They all seem to have a book type error
Here are some logs:

I removed them. For future reference it's the srting of numbers near the top of the log that starts with 1A23.
Have you tried uninstalling the drive through Device Manager?
Have you tried the drive in another PC?
My killer sig came courtesy of bb "El Jefe" mayo.

Hi-
thanks for the serial # removal -- I appreciate it, I didn't think of that.
And, no, I havent tried uninstalling the drive in the dev. manager (I did re flash the firmware, tho)
And I don't have another system to try moving the drive to - just a laptop.
At the moment I am likely on my way to another failed burn , I wanted to see if by some slim shot the system restore helped ... so I'm trying again with shrink, to see if the problem persists.
I also wanted to mention that both spindles of discs are (the ritek and prodiscs) are not new - they are both about half way through the qty of 50 - so it's not like I opened up new spindles and may be having a bad media issue.
I'd really appreciate any help anyone can offer, here - I'm stumped and the coasters are piling up.

Hi-
Well, I have now uninstalled the drive in the device manager, reinstalled it, and reloaded the 1.05 firmware - no luck, still can't burn anything.
I'm completely stumped -- I do see a book type error in the logs - could that be part of the problem?
I really need some help - does anyone see anything in the logs that could point to the underlying issue??
Thanks,
Tammy

You said the discs you are burning are DVD-R's, booktype setting is only done on DVD+R's (as far as I know) so I would look for a check box where it says booktype DVD-ROM, maybe uncheck this. Have you tried to burn with DVD Decrypter?
If you love something set it free, if it comes back it is yours and always was, if it doesn't HUNT IT DOWN AND KILL IT !!!

Before you take your computer apart, why don't you use DVD Decrypter to see if the drive can still write?
1. Create an ISO copy of one of the decrypted disks.
2. Write the ISO to one of the disks.
2a. or Check to see if you can write a data disk.
3. If it can write the iso than the problem is not the player.
4. If you can than to circumvent your problem, use DVD Shrink to create your info and VOB files. Copy the Video_ts folder with it's contents to your disk. This is the way I do it. Treat it as an ordinary data file. As a programmer you should be able to do that.

I will try those suggestions, and post back.
I have just tried CloneDVD (using its internal burn engine) and the burn also abruptly failed (just like shrink does) about 48% of the way through the copy.
Wow -- its looking like my drive up and died -- I guess that's possible, right??

Cannot burn the encoded files with Nero either (by dragging the pre encoded contents into the video_ts folder)- burn failed, again. I will post the log at the end of this post
I will try and burn just data, now - to see if it will burn data on a disc. What could be causing this? This drive has been great - and now suddenly, it seems dead??!

Next I considered a Roxio/Nero conflict. The only different thing I have done this week is start burning music cd's with Roxio Easy Cd and DVD Creator 6. So, I remembered that Roxio and Nero have alwyas hated each other, and decided to remove them both to rule out a conflict. While I was at it, I disabled the built in XP cd burning on the drive. Then I removed Roxio, used the zapper to get all of it, removed Nero, and reinstalled just Nero. I'm trying another burn now. If that doesn't work, next, I'm going to try burning an ISO with decrypter, to see if the drive may still be able to burn anything. I'll post if I hit anything that actually works, right now it isn't looking good, and anyone with more suggestions would be my hero.
:)

I am having similar problems with my burner although I have not burnt thousands, but hundreds. I have NU DDW-082 burner and it has always done fine, most coasters being my fault, then recently it has just started to crap out on me, it won't burn to Taiyo Yudens anymore and I just made three coasters on Ridata +r's. When I tried to burn to TYG02's it just write's a lead-in it seems and proceeds to "act" like it is burning, but once shrink/decrypter/nero "finish burning successfully" there is nothing on the disc.
So, does this sound like a hardware problem to anyone? or is there something else I can do to check. I have re-flashed firmware, tried burning with many different programs.. I dunno what to do.

I am able to burn an audio CD in Nero -- does this make sense to anyone? It seems that I shouldn't be able to burn anything - ? As it is, NO DVD-burning software can complete a burn, (shrink, decrypter, clonedvd) but I *CAN* burn an audio CD.
For whatever its worth, I have run adaware, spybot, Giant, and McAfee virus scan. (no viruses, and removed a little spyware - not much) no help there, either.
Does this make sense to anyone?

This is interesting. I *can* burn at 2x and complete the burn successfully. However, the PI/PO tests on the subsequent discs are not very good (PI hovering around 20 and maxing at 40). The same media (ritek G05 burned at 6x prior to all these problems used to have PI rates UNDER 5 from beginning to end.
So, yes, I can burn at 2x (and only at 2x) but the burns are of a much diminished quality than I used to have (2 weeks ago).
Conclusion: Dead/Dying Burner, I suppose.
At least I can likely stop trying to fix it, now. Thanks, everyone, for your suggestions, I really appreciate it.
Anyone have any opinion on NEC 3520 vs PX-716 as a new burner? Or maybe the sony 710A?
I'm not sure the plex is worth the $ anymore.
I've read some reviews of both - anyone want to weigh in?

tamula...for you to burn 1000 cds/dvds that way alot. i mean thats like a business you are runnign there. any burner will die out after a certain amount of burning, it depends how long the laser will last. it has nothing to do with what brand of burner you buy or use. it eventually will die out after more than a 1000 burns. my friend had the sony..forgot what brand....but his died out after burning 20 or more every day. you could try nec, benq, or even plextor again. but i make sure you get a extended warranty on it. if you are going to do all that burning, get a warranty with it.

i own both the sony dru 710a and plextor 716 . i also picked up a nec 3520 for a recent build for my girl . the nec was the cheaper of the three and it works just as good . i could have bought 2 of the nec for the price of the plextor . i have no regrets with the plextor other than the price . after using the nec drive im very impressed with it and if i was to do this over again i would buy just the nec 3520a .

@ Trip_Wire
Let's try and use more appropriate adjectives shall we? My other personality happens to be gay and was very offended by your term "gay ass".
Also, any run of the mill dummy can simply say "use program A instead of program B" but the recommendation carries no weight or creedence without some sort of qualification. "Nero sux" typically comes out of the mouth of a dipwad that didn't even have the intelligence to operate Nero properly. You're not one of those dipwads are you? Would you care to qualify why Nero "sux"?
My killer sig came courtesy of bb "El Jefe" mayo.
