You'll be ok with 650 mhz, that's more than my backup pc.I only have the 9 gig and 30 gig hardrives and 1 optical drive- I/O 16x drive which is brand new,but I will replace with another benq 1620 I just ordered at newegg."compatability issues on my stand alones" that I won't tolerate.

I am not sure of it's powersupply, it's an old flat ibm tower with my old hp hardrive and old hp 128 mb stick of ram,but it runs a hell of a lot better than my main pc-just slower.

Another thing to take into consideration, while doing any of the dvd rip/encode/and burn, heat can be an issue, especially if using DVD Shrink. I had to put a new heat-sink fan,80 mm case fan,and another pci slot blower to control that issue on my main pc.

Ok, is there a setting to set your burn drive as your target? I am not familliar with copytodvd. I am a Nero sort of guy. When I copy disc to disc, I scroll around and set Nero to use my dvd-rom drive as the reader and my backup target drive"benq" as the writer. I haven't messed with backing up data files on dvd,I still use cd's.

What does your device manager say under Secondary Channel?

What does it say for your DVD Burner and CD-Rom under their own listing?

Location (0) and Location (1), etc.

I thought we were going to remove the CD-Rom and put back the DVD-Rom, change the jumpers and reboot so that Windows would see the changes?

Also try this:

Remove the devices under Device manager again, uninstall them and then reboot, and see what the device manager says about what you have in your system.

Note:

Some ribbon cables have a pre-printed cable selection on them, such as one plug will show "master" and the other would show "slave". It might be on the ribbon itself. Check that also.

saugmon: Yeah, you caught my mistake. I didn't have CopytoDVD set to the right Drive.

I chose the NEC Burner and set it at the slowest speed (2.4, I think). It seemed to be burning fine and then I got the dreaded bluescreen with the message:

An exception OE has occurred at 0028:C003150 in VXD. This was called from 0028:C003150BF in VXD.

===============================================

I've removed the Drives in Device Mgr and rebooted twice but nothing changes. Each have their own listing as follows.....

Device Manager:

NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A
AXV CD/DVD-ROM
TEAC CD-W54E

Properties:

NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A

Device Type: CD ROM
Manufacturer: Standard CD ROM Device
Device Status: Working Properly

Target ID: 1
logical unit number: 0

AXV CD/DVD-ROM (which is the drive I removed)

Device Type: CD ROM
Manufacturer: Standard CD ROM Device
Device Status: Working Properly

Target ID: 0

TEAC CD-W54E

That means that your NEC is set to Slave. Is it jumpered to Slave or Master?

Target ID 0 = Master
Target ID 1 = Slave

I put it in place of my old DVD-rom and basically just connected it how the DVD-rom was connected.

It is slave to the CD-rom. They share an IDE cable, CD-rom is master, new NEC is slave.

Does "jumpered" refer to the cable connection?

Jumpered refers to the little jumper on the back of every optical unit. They have three settings, CS for cable select, SL for slave, and MA for master.

Look at the back of your Burner for either a little black or white jumper. As you look at the back of your unit, your left should be the CS position, middle should be the Slave position and your right should be the Master position. If you have your unit set to slave, then the jumper must also be set to slave.

I have it set to Cable Select. The DVD-rom I removed was CS so I set the NEC for CS.

Should I change this to SL?

To help someone it's always good to be on a level playing field. That's why I suggested way back when to setup your burner and rom drives a certain way.

Can we try that first, one as a master and one as a slave?

Give that a try and let us know.

You guy are really going out of your way here for Colin. I'm impressed. I have been on a lot of forums of different topics over the years, and still very active on a quite a few,...( I have many adictions,..:)), and there are a lot of good folks on the forums for sure. You guys are really sticking your knecks out,..I'm surely glad to be here,....

Colin I know I'm butting in on your thread, buit if I may, Guys I mentioned software,...There is so much around, and they all have different qualities,...Is there a "Sticky" on this somewhere ont he site?, or where can I start another thread to be bombarded with suggestions and explinations. I have done many hours of research already, and am only a littl closer to decideing what is best for me.
I have tried a couple so far, and have mixed feelings. I want as much control as possible, of course with as good a transfer as possible, but don't want to spend a small furtune on it, and have to spend all day creating a disk,...

Thanks much guys, and I will step out of Colins way here,....

ScubaBud:

"I would have suggested that you first make your new DVD Burner the Master and put back your DVD-Rom drive making it the slave since your DVD Burner will also be what you will use for your CD burning as well. This way when you backup a DVD movie, you can use your DVD-Rom for ripping and your Burner for Burning the blank media. Hopefully your new burner came with a different ribbon cable such as one with a blue end which goes to the MB, a black plug which goes to the master, and a grey plug that goes to your slave."
======================================

I will replace the CD-ROM will the NEC. So it will be the master- then I'll put my DVD-rom back in making it slave to the NEC. I assume that is the way to do it because as I said previously the NEC did not come with any cables.

I'll let you know how it works. Thanks!!!!!

Quick list:

Free...
DVD Shrink
DVD Decrypter
Edit: added Nero to this free list.

My Choice:
AnyDVD in the background for Decrypting and NeroRecode2 (made by the same person that designed DVD Shrink, but without the ability to decrypt.

Thanks for the Accolades but most here, from newbies to addicts, do the same for each other. :)

Thanks again Saugmon :)

Yes, I left out Nero under the Free section. I'll add it now as an edit.

Not a coffee issue this time, instead it was my three Westies saying; ?its time for our Saturday walk so get off that darn PC right now!?

Also, I've got to get ready and split from the house again, but this time for a while so good luck to all!

I switched the Drives as suggested. As before the switch, the Device Mgr still showed:

NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A
AXV CD/DVD-ROM
TEAC CD-W54E

I then removed them, restarted and they were still there.

I tried to burn data onto a DVD at 2.4x speed using CopytoDVD (I have 10 GB of space on my HD).

As it did the first time I tried this (but before switching drives), it started to burn and then the computer locked up.

Colin- 0
Coasters- 3

I don't know if this means anything but in the details of CopytoDVD while burning it said: "Warning: Optimal Power Calibration Failed. Code 062900 (unit attention, Power on or Bus Device reset occurred). After it showed that message, it did begin to burn so I don't know if it means anything or not.

When I've tried to burn, I am connected to the internet (DSL)- but I don't think that would make a difference. Nothing else is running in the background.

Any ideas where to go from here?

(By the way, I am using Maxell DVD+Rs)

Is it failing during the lead-in phase, or after the actual burn?
Look at that disc for the slight different color if it actually burned. If it didn't actually burn, the media code may not be registered with your firmware.

I burn a lot of those maxell +4x's and they should code as ricohjpn-01,pretty good.

Do you have any +rw's to practice with until your we can get your burner to successfully burn a dvd?

Try un-installing copytodvd completely and re-install it. It may be like Nero and gets those little ticks in it.

It's freezing up during the actual burn. This time it did get a bit further than my other 2 attempts.

I did some searching online for the CopytoDVD message, "Warning: Optimal Power Calibration Failed..." and found that there may be a conflict with CopytoDVD and other burning software.

I also have Easy CD creator and Nero 5.5 on my computer. So, I just uninstalled both (I used the clean tool for Nero).

No, I don't have any RW discs. Stupid me. I'm going to try burning again now. If it doesn't work I should probably go out and buy some RWs as you suggested.

This thread is getting very long. I forgot you are trying to burn files. What format are these files? like mpeg/jpeg/avi/xvid/etc.

Converting files other than iso and VOB files are out of my league.

Lets get back to basics. Can you remove that teac cd rom,and axv drives? Leave your nec 3520 and jumper it to set for secondary master.

Do you have any dvd movies that we can try to get you to burn?

Can you then try to burn an audio cd and make sure it's ok?

We need to find out if that nec will work.

I'm about to leave the house so you guys want me to bring you back something for lunch?!?!? <G>

Don't forget about going on Microsoft?s website or search here for the fix to remove Easy CD creator since that might be the major problem here. Remember it does not remove itself very well. Here is a link from Roxio.com about their removal method.

I?ll be back in time for dinner call also. :)

Scubabud,..
How does the Nerorecode2 differ from the regular Nero? I have a trial version of Nero Platinum, and it just performed pretty well,...I didn't get the menus I wanted, and not sure what I did wrong. I was trying to get rid of the extras, and keep the menus,...Must have done it backwards,....I used the Reauthor feature, and reduced the total file size to 100% compresion, and the copy seems to look great,....

Update-Package 2

NeroVision Express 3
Nero Recode 2
Nero ShowTime 2
Nero PhotoSnap
Nero MediaHome

As you can see, its part of Package 2 and is almost a twin to DVD Shrink, maybe because the creator of Shrink wrote the program for Nero Recode2. But of course it does not have a Decryptor built in.

The menus are actually the chapters without the fancy screens. When you push the menu button on your remote, you will see something like Chapters 1-27. You would need to arrow through them to see what they are about. But the nice thing is that most movies will then fit almost completely on a DVD5 without the need for much compression, if any.

Scubabud,...
Sounds good. I take it then that the menus and all for Nero Recode2 are very similar to Shrink?, as well as Recode2 will burn, and Shrink doesn't,...
I have a trial of AnyDVD right now as well. I loaded it to give 1 Click Copy a try. It seemed to work very well,...but didn't leave you with much control,...

hey everyone -
i'm obviously in a similar boat as other newbies as far as dvd-r set up goes. I too just purchased the NEC DVD_RW ND-3520A from new egg. Installed it and am a) either doing something wrong or b) finding some serious incompatability. I bought this along with the verbatim dvd-rs from new egg. I assumed the dvd-r would be recognized without any real problem. When I put a blank in, and try to explore the dvd-r or use software to initiate a burn, i get the message "D:/ is not accessable. Incorrect function". It reads music cds fine and acknowledged a dvd movie without any trouble. So, my question is - does this have to do with the hardware and how i've got it set up or is there in fact a possibility of compatability issues between these DVD-rs and the NEC burner? Please, please help! I'm going stir crazy.

thx,
sara
