Guide on splitting a DVD9 into two DVD5's

This is the story of me splitting a DVD9 into two DVD5's.

Hardware used : Standard 1200mhz comp (WinXp) with Pioneer DVRA05 writer
Software used : SmartRipper v2.41, DVD IDle Pro v1.0, IfoEdit v0.95, Nero v5.5.10.0, PowerDVD v4.0 for XP

I will use Star Trek TNG - Season 1 - First Disc (Region 1) in this example, but the principal of the thing should become clear to you :-)

1. Ripping the DVD (using SmartRipper v2.41)

SmartRipper greets me with a "no ASPI-Adapter available" message. So I didn't use ASPI for the rip proces.
Select the DVD-Rom drive you'll use for ripping. SmartRipper is scanning the accessibility of all the files on the DVD.
When a file is locked you'll have to unlock it using a player, I used PowerDVD. My DVD-Rom drive is region locked (hardware), so I had to
use DVDIdle Pro v1.0 to get around the region protection. Just for the record, when your dvd-rom isn't region locked you DON'T have
to use DVDIdle Pro v1.0!!

Lets take a look at my settings in SmartRipper (just to be complete) :

MOVIE TAB
Key-Check - Every VOB File
File-Splitting - Every VOB File
VOB File Access - Auto
Max File Size - 4000mb (div0)
Options - Disabled : Create Directories, Ignore Low Discspace, Fast Error Skip

FILES/BACKUP TAB
Key-Check - Every VOB File
VOB File Access - Auto
Options - Disabled : Create Directories


After you've made these settings we'll select 'FILES' for the Rip method.
Select ALL files on the DVD (use the button below instead of checking every file)
Set a target directory with enough free space (8,2gig for ST TNG disc1x01)
REMEMBER the volume label of the DVD located on the top-right of SmartRipper next to the "eject" button (in my case NEXTGEN)
Rip away by hitting the "Start" button.

2. The actual splitting (using IfoEdit v0.95)

Fire up IfoEdit. Open VTS_02_0.IFO freshly ripped to your hard drive. We want to keep the menu on both dvd5's so nothing will be
changed with the "Menu Extras" button!! We can see 3 program chains. These represent the three episodes on the DVD. The first episode is
a dual so this will be the first DVD5, the other 2 episodes will be on the second DVD5.

PGC_1 (First episode) uses VOB id's 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11,12,13,14
PGC_2 (second episode) uses VOB id's 15,16,17,18,19,20,21,22,23
PGC_3 (Third episode) uses VOB id's 24,25,26,27,28,29,30,31

Click on VOB extras. Disable "Re-Mux" and "Rebuild PTS", we don't want to loose any quality of the dvd. Disable "Strip Streams", we
don't want to get rid of any of the audio tracks or sub pictures. Disable "Create new IFO files (movie only)", because we want to use
the menu's on the DVD. DISABLE "Split to 2 DVD-Rs", trust me :-) Disable "Remove IIvu/Angle Point" and use Vob Size 1gig. Set a destination
directory (eg. E:\Disc1).

The rest of the options will be grayed out or ENABLED.
Click OK.

For Disc1 :
Now you have to select the VOB id's you'd like to KEEP, for disc1 these will be 1 thru 14. Enable "Correct IFO Tables" and then Strip it.
Wait for the stripping to finish and receive a message "Finished correcting VOBU pointers".
In the E:\Disc1 directory there will be 10 files.
Copy over the 4 VTS_01*.* files from the original rip directory used by SmartRipper.

For Disc2 :
Now you have to select the VOB id's you'd like to KEEP, for disc1 these will be 15 thru 31. Enable "Correct IFO Tables" and then Strip it.
In the E:\Disc2 directory there will be 10 files.
Copy over the 4 VTS_01*.* files from the original rip directory used by SmartRipper.

Woohooo, are we done yet?
Almost, before burning a few other thingies you have to do with BOTH discs :

- Open VIDEO_TS.IFO in IfoEdit
- Click on the "Region Free" button, if RCE Checking is found remove it by selecting the Region it HAS (my source dvd was Region 1)
- Click on the "Get VTS Sectors" button, choose NO on processing all ifo's.
- Save VIDEO_TS.IFO and aslo overwrite the BUP file.

- Open VTS_02_0.IFO in IfoEdit
- Click on the "Region Free" button, if RCE Checking is found remove it by selecting the Region it HAS (my source dvd was Region 1)
- Click on the "Get VTS Sectors" button, choose NO on processing all ifo's.
- Save VTS_02_0.IFO and aslo overwrite the BUP file.


3. Burning both discs
I use Nero v5.5.10.0 in combination with my Pioneer DVRA05 writer.

- Open Nero and select DVD-ROM(UDF/ISO)
- Select No Multisession
- Select ISO Level 1
- Select ISO9660 and NO Joliet
- Do NOT relax any ISO restrictions
- Use UDF 1.02 Physical Partition (Do not force DVD Video compatability unless you ONLY want to use the disc on an X-Box)
- Set the volume label (NEXTGEN in my case)
- Select burn
- Manually create an AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS directory
- Drag the dvd files in the VIDEO_TS directory
- Burn

Works for me, how about you guys??

Morant05, did you ever get the Band of Brothers copied? I am trying to copy them using DVD-X-Copy with no sucess. I also tried using Remco's method above. However, there is only one PGC (PGC_1) in the VTS_02_0.IFO. There is a PGC_1 and PGC_2 i in VTS_01_0.IFO.

Any and all help is appreciated. Anyone feel free to jump in here. Thanks to all.

I am also stuck on this point, I am fairly new to making backups but am getting more literate on the subject. Just curious as to if anyone can give me a few tips on backing up Band of Brothers. Any help appreciated, THANX...

hey just got it... (on Band of Brothers Disc 1) just follow his steps and open VTS_01_0.IFO instead... for the first episode ur gonna select 2 and 3. the second episode is 1 and 3. sweet works awesome.

such a relief since dvdxcopy can't get it together heheh menus don't work 'that bad' either... i think since in that final step u click 'no' to process all ifo's it doesn't attempt to correct the rest of the menus (say if u insert episode 1 and try to play episode 2... it just spits u out to the main menu again... would be nice to have that "please insert disc 2 dummy" in there but oh well i am still new at this so when someone can write a guide to walk this idiot through how to do that.... i am all ears :)

I have tried a few other options but it seems that using IfoEdit I always get the following error:
No Navigation-pack found in VOB file(s)! Looks like you're dealing with invalid VOB file(s).
Any ideas why this is happening? I follow the guide to the T.
Any help appreciated.

might actually be invalid VOB files... can u actually view the files in mpeg-vcr or VOBrator? another thing to verify is that your dvd rip to the hard drive is the same size as the actual dvd / same ammount of files (haven't verified this down to the acutal bytes but normally after i rip i just check the x.xx gb and file numbers to make sure they match up. also just to verify you are using ifoedit 0.95? dunno what else the problem could be :/ works great for me i used smart ripper to rip the dvd - selected the "files" rip meathod click the all button then select a target directory and wait for 15 min or so. ((dunno if this is the 'best' or 'correct' way to do is cause i am rather new myself - but i haven't had any problems so far. anyway after u 'split' the two discs episode one should end up 4.24gb and episode two 3.15 - another point to note is in v0.95 I never had to copy over the VTS_01*.* files from the original rip directory as specified... ifo edit moved it for me right after i received the message "Finished correcting VOBU pointers". for that matter if i did copy them all over from the orig directory the dvd would be well over the burn limit so i really don't understand that step at all (just figured maybe it is for Star Trek in particular)

anyway good luck u will get it.

I got IFOEdit to work, I think I had a bad install of SmartRipper, once I reinstalled it it ripped fine. The problem I am now facing is that my burned copy won't play in my DVD player, I also tried it in a friends DVD and it wouldnt work. It will work on my PC DVD using PowerDVD but not anywhere else?! I used Nero and followed the steps and settings listed in Remco's guide. Did you use a different burn program or different settings? Thanks for the help so far :)

hmm... and i am assuming that you have burned other dvd's (thus u know your dvd player is compatible with dvd-r's) i burn with nero too... (i actually use the wizzard for video files thing despite how everyone seems to hate it) cause normally with me i find if it errors then i have done something wrong, and when it doesn't the dvd works - hence no coasters.

ok basically (though trying not to rewrite remco's post)

i ripped the full dvd with smart ripper checked to make sure the ripped size was the same as the dvd (cause sometimes smart ripper and i have had issues)

next loaded VTS_01_0.IFO into ifoedit and clicked on the vob extras button... for me i didn't have to change any check marks (as mentioned in remco's part) cause they are all by default to how he specified... anyway hit ok and then put the check mark for vob 2 and 3.

waited forever - closed ifoedit, opened it again loaded the new VIDEO_TS.IFO from the output folder... scroll down into the menu where it has "(uses playback or vobid 2,3,4)" not positive on the wording normally just look for the 2,3,4 and hit the delete from playback button (cause if u don't then u get the fbi warning) *note i used vobrator to verify which vobid or whatever that fbi warning was located in - which from memory i think was 3) anyway there are tons of turorials on that... once i deleted i saved the ifo /bup, then clicked the 'get vts sectors' button clicked NO it corrects like one thing... then save the ifo /bup again and whala.

(load output into nero video burning wizzard and wait an hr)

anyway... beyond that dunno what to tell ya... if your on aim or yahoo my sn is zhenyalix so ya can ring me, could setup vnc or something though it really doesn't seem like it would be necessary hehehe if u wanna ftp 4gb to test ur burner with my rip lol hehehe (that and verify i am not nutz)

OK, followed the guide, burned to a DVD+R (HP200i) and it plays perfectly in the HP. I tried every stand alone I could find and get disk errors. (Walked up and down my street asking neighbors if I could try something, laugh)

I am using a full registered version of Nero 5.5.10. I clicked on DVD/DVD VIDEO and just clicked burn. (Also got the latest firmware and DLA is removed.)

Do I need to change any of the ISO settings or anything in Nero? Tried the disk in a sony, toshiba and a panasonic that are supposed to be able to read the media, all with no luck.

Also other than using Nero is there another way to burn these files to a DVD+R, something along the lines of the software that came with the HP burner or something like DVDit.

Any ideas???? Thanks in advance.

yeah any dvd'able burning program can burn a dvd, (u can create a dvd by simply creating the video_ts folder and putting your files in it... i just prefer to use the nero wizzard since it makes attempts to check my work out before burning. however i don't think a different app will give u better results (just personal opinion) i would check vcdhelp.com to make sure your dvd player is also dvd+r compliant... though if u really went up and down the street heheheh assuming someones would be cause i think it is like 86% of them on the market should be... are u working on band of brothers specificly? if so what does your directory layout look for disc 1 episode 1?

hmm dunno how this is gonna come out (copy and paste) but here is my directory -

Found a website that said Nero v. 5.5.10 has a bug in it that prevents it from playing in stand alone players. Anyone else know of this????

Here is what it said..

I don't know what this message means (anybody who can shed any light please let me know)
The next step is to Copy all the files into a folder called VIDEO_TS and burn this folder with your DVD software tool, I use Nero 5.5.9 (Not Nero 10 this has a bug that will not allow you copies to work on your standalone DVD) but its your choice. check out other forums to see how to burn using different apps.
I have also just used ifoedit and clicked on the DVD Image button, this creates a DVD image that can be burnt back using DVDDecrypter.

I have Nero 5.5.6 disc. Nero's site only offers the upgrade to 5.5.10, is there nay site where I can get the upgrade to 5.5.9 or do I need to check Kazaa for a download?

I've only burned DVD-R's using Nero v5.5.10.0 on the method described above...

Tested the DVD-R's on more than 12 standalone players...no problems whatsoever!!

There's a bug in Nero v5.5.10.0's DVD Video template, but if you choose (UDF/ISO) and do some manual settings it will work on standalones...trust me

I got a copy of Nero 5.5.9.17 and redid the whole procedure, burning at 1X. It turned out good, not perfect though :p. I had a problem on one of my players, when I fast forward it scrambles the picture and I cannot rewind, the chapter skip and back works good, just the frame advance/rewind. This was on my GE (which is about a year and a half old), but it worked very well on my Mintek DVD player. Thanks for everyones help on this, if anyone has any ideas about the scrambling please let me know.

anyone try this technique on the Gundam Wing box set? the layout is something totally off the wall to any episodic disc i have yet to see (none of the 17+ different vob files have pcg markers for the episodes) figured worse case senerio i just start guessing at random :/

just use the preview function in IfoEdit v0.95 ;-)

You can play the entire DvD and see what .VOBs are actually used for playing the eps or just sniff around in the 17(!) .VOBs...

thks for the guide i successfuly backed up disk 1 of band of brothers and i used NERO 5.5.10.0 and it plays fine in my standalone DVD player

You think this guide will work with most DVD's

that ifoedit preview window crashes on me so i had to get more creative... dunno if this will help anyone, but on Episodic DVD's that aren't obvious where to split (like how easy it is with Band of brothers or Star Trek) one thing that i found that helps is to look at the time frame next to the PCG_#

for example in the Best Of Friends DVD's (dvd 2 forinstance has 12 PCG's though only 5 episodes thought i would have to start guessing at random which to extract to split the dvd on... though the possibilties are almost endless i kept digging and noticed this line -

PCG_2 (program chain): [Title(TTN): ] [00:24:25.01 / 30 fps] (Programs: 2) (Cells : 2) (uses VOB-IDs: 2,7)

and assumed 24 min of play... probably episode 1.... then you can see some PCG's that are only a few min long thus figured those are all for the menus and extras etc.... soo i found all the vob-id's that are used for small things and the ones on the first three pgc's that i would guess are the first three episodes then ripped, corrected the vts sectors burned and it worked perfectly... first three episodes were on disc 1. seems a bit more logical than just random guessing if anyone else out there doesn't have the preview ability.

any thoughts?

oh another note is if anyone is burning the Gundam Wing episodes... the vob extras split only gives u the option for splitting vob-id 1 - after toying with it a while (cause obviously if you checked the ONLY box thats an option to check its final output will be as big as the origionally directory lol) anyway found out that these guys broke apart the episodes by the .VOB files themselves... ie. the first .vob file you find that is 1,048,534 is episode 1 (well all the vob files for that section i mean - ie. VTS_02_1.VOB, VTS_02_2.VOB, the ifo file and bup file...) soo all you have to do is copy the three sets of .vob files over with all the small files that are the menues and extra features and whala after the get vts sectors to correct the sectors in the vmg_ptt table... your good to go


:-D so to answer your question mastervon, most episodic dvd's can be ripped using this method... just some (like this one) can't b/c they are just odd.

I have been having a really hard time with the Band of Brothers collection. When trying to burn the first Disc, exactly which files need to be present in Nero for the DVD to write correctly? Each time I write the DVD I get the HBO Video screen (after the FBI Warning) and then the screen goes blank. Following the directions above, when the instructions say, "Copy over the 4 VTS_01*.* files from the original rip directory used by SmartRipper," what files need to be moved for the BOB collection? I am using DVD Decrypter...is there a difference?
