Well, this definitely is a sad day for us all, but cheer up. The law of supply and demand says that even if they shut down all companies that offer decryption software, more will pop up to take their place. The demand is there but the supply is not. Someone out there will want to take advantage of this situation.
The knowledge is out there folks.

Everything is in life is circular, what goes around comes around so do programs they just get repackaged and sold as something else, look Xcopy is still being sold.
I do have a question that if anyone can answer I would appreciate it. Maybe it sounds dumb but in the LUK statement it eludes to disabling your automatic update, but the only check for update button is in the help tab, wouldn't clicking on this open me up to someone, and not the reverse?

Don't let the NEWBIE statis get you down. Most of us look at the quality of information that someone brings to the forum, not the tag under their name. The member statis is upgraded by post count so it won't take long to start to change. I have read Newbie posts that make more sense and add more information than some higher up members. It all works out in the end. Again, welcome aboard.

Hate to see Decrypter go. LighningUK has done excellent work developing and updating the app. Now that it's an orphan, possibly someone from offshore can do something with it. That's how some people circumvent the Big Brother rulings currently in effect. I still contend there is a difference between fair use and piracy. But the movie industry will continue to bleed the public for every last cent they can, irregardless of how they do it.

hi all
yes totally gutted!!!
i wonder how things will pan out now, as the only way forward is going underground with apps that rip.
long live open source!
RIP DD

Underground? Then how would anybody get the progs? See, the problem is, is that these progs get too popular! Don't get me wrong, I'm glad that they do, but doesn't anybody realize the the "industry" reads and I'm sure are users of these forum groups? How else do you think they get the info that they need to go after the programmers?
Also, I agree that the MPAA will drain us for every cent that we have! Stop paying the actors so much! Hell, they don't even do their own stunts in the movies!
I'm keeping my fingers crossed that someday, someone will develop somthing new! Until then, I will continue to use DVDD and shrink!

Things don't necessarily have to be underground and the movie industry and their government puppets don't hold sway everywhere in the world. Programs for use come from venues they have no control over. I don't see the continuing battle as making a lot of sense. So far the movie industry has spent millions of dollars trying to stop software development in countries that bought into the millenium copyright act. There are enough countries with software developers with no constraints that make the effort futile. But then, the money spent came from the consumers and from their investment the industry hopes to make more money. Seems the most losses aren't in the countries where they can stop ripping software, but in countries where they hold no control.
It would be interesting if the industry had to replace every damaged disc. I wonder then if they would be more in favor of fair use.

Wow, This is the first post for me. I've been a member for a few months and only used the site for the occasional read or info on programs. This turn of events that came to my e-mail has left me even more disgusted in the wake of the supreme courts decision yesterday with the weed issue. When are our freedoms going to be given back to us? For the people, by the people is a truley dead term. We are slowly becoming a police state governed country... and it's spreading to other "free" countries as we just learned from LUK!
Here's a story: "No Name" goes and pays his rental fees at the national chain movie joint to view new and classic movies, can't afford to purchase them at 10$ to 30$ a pop cause he has to also provide the neccessities for his family, but also loves to watch the kiddies enjoying spongebob and bob the builder. He rips movies so he can let them and himself enjoy them when they feel like it. Is he worthy of jail time for this? When the huge chain has bought literally thousands of copies they will later resale? He's not reselling. Maybe they should be the ones scrutenized<??
The bottom line is: The distributers are making their money off the rental joints, any thing more is plain greed... the same greed that sucking our country dry. We are a fat greedy country... the supersized kid brother of the world showing off all our new toys that make us bigger and stronger... when in reality we're killing ourselves.
I'm ranting, I'll quit.
A tear goes out to LUK and personal freedom everywhere.

DVD Decrypter is "gone" like DVD Shrink is "gone". Just won't be updated again but still useful for a long time to come just like DVD Shrink is still useful and is still greatly used even though it hasn't been updated in a year or so. So suck it up and keep burning...:-)

i was just getting used to the shrink/decrypter combo.
what are the chances when Lightning UK! turns everything over that we will see a Lightning Antigua! take his place?
of all the forums affected by this news, i hope decrypter forum peeps take the time to check out this forum, for the seasoned vets and the newbish (like me) it seems like AfterDawn has everything covered and is the most 'user-friendly'
there always seems to be someone around to help out
i can't afford AnyDVD right now, so i'll stick with shrink/decrypter as long as it is possible.
peace

Any chance of putting out an update that allows for extensions so that other users could release updates for new methods of cracking? I love this program, and I'd hate to see it go by the wayside.

The last minute? The app is still available from various sites. Manuals are available here at AD in guides, Doom9 has guides, and I believe Digital Digest may have something on it. Just because Lightning UK stopped support doesn't mean the app won't be around for a while longer.

Too bad about DVD Decrypter - at least I made a three figure donation when I switched to DVD Decrypter (and Shrink) from the old 321 Studio software about two years ago.
Life goes on - 321 Studios software, DVD Decrypter, and Shrink are all no longer supported. Looks like the Slysoft software probably has the best chance strategy to survive.
I'm sure five, ten years from now, Afterdawn will still have links to, and forums for, whatever DVD backup software is in vogue to backup your DVDs, no matter what the DVD formats and encyption algorithms may be at that time. There will always be a commercial company, or a Lighting UK, out there to meet this obvious consumer demand.
