Quote: the site is down at present...
no its back up - hehehe
<removed>
IMO, sounds very, very much like a scam. First of all, LUK! rarely did any spelling mistakes, but the website in question is full of them. The "back" news article talks about team of programmes, losing code, etc. AFAIK, LUK! did all the code by himself, so this is b.s.
Additionally, as LUK! indicated he has reached an agreement with "certain company", it sound very weird that he would be able to simply launch a new website and pick up the coding again. And if he could that, what are the odds that he wouldn't have backups of his source code stored in various well distributed email accounts, so he could easily just take 3.5.4.0's source and continue.
IMO, it is simply a website trying to cash in due the fact that the original is now gone. So, I'd say, don't pay them attention and especially don't go donating them -- rather wait some solid open source alternative to spark which you can donate to or simply support commercial tools like AnyDVD or DVD Region-Free CSS.

Well, I can't say DVDD never let me down. But when problems came up, Lightning UK was always very quick about getting the app updated. He was much faster and better at support than most retail offerings. So, my hat has always been off to LUK for doing such an excellent job with freeware.
Hate to see the app loose support, but there is a lot of use left to it. As far as ripoffs, that is nothing new. People over the years have been bundling and selling DVD Decrypter along with DVD Shrink and other popular freeware utilities. People new to doing DVD backups are easy prey for this type scam. The current proliferation of posts about DVD Decrypter just make it more enticing for newbies if they can't find a legitimate download source. Not everyone knows where to look.
Until "Big Brother" and the entertainment industry can buy their way into influencing countries not now under their thumb, freeware and good retail apps still have a source where users can access the recording software. Let's hope not all countries will cave in and let the entertainment industry buy its way in influencing the law. Hopefully some of the countries being influenced will listen to their citizens and rethink and relegislate some of the fair use laws.

Well, it was wonderful to hear from LUK in DOOM9. I always wondered...how did they find him? Or am I being naive?
Technically, Macrovision violates their own defense by stating: Quote: The companies concerned produce devices that permit analogue copies despite corrupt video signals
in that: the most widely available dictionary in the computer domain (the required domain to violate a Macrovision patent) is Encarta, which states that a copy is defined as follows:
Quote: cop·y [kóppee]
n (plural cop·ies)
1. reproduction: something that is made exactly like something else in appearance or function
2. one of many: any of many identical specimens of something that is produced in large numbers, especially something printed or published
3. written text: the written text to be published in a book, newspaper, or magazine, as distinct from visual material or graphics
v (past cop·ied, past participle cop·ied, present participle cop·y·ing, 3rd person present singular cop·ies)
1. vt make identical version: to make another example or specimen that is exactly the same as something
2. vt do same as: to do exactly what somebody else does
3. vti cheat by doing same: to reproduce the work of another fraudulently
4. vt send copy to somebody: to send a copy to somebody, especially a copy of a letter or other document
All heads of departments should have been copied.
[14th century. Via French from, ultimately, Latin copia ?abundance, power, right? (see copious), in phrases meaning ?the right to transcribe.?]
-cop·y·a·ble, adj
Microsoft® Encarta® Reference Library 2003. © 1993-2002 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
Therefore, an analogue "copy" is so poor that it is, in fact, not a copy at all, and that it is not, by even the vaguest interpretation, the same as the original.

Ok OK....... now that we all know that DVDDecrypter is no longer (of which we all morn), what do you think of the new DVDFAb Decrypter? I just downloaded it and haven't used it yet. Says that it will do the same as if not better (cause it will be updated) than DVDDecrypter. What say you all???? Has anyone used it yet?

I used it, but was not on any of the new DVD's with the latest protection, but it worked fine. Ripped disk to hardrive into a file labelled Disk 1 and then I burned it with CopyToDVD. Backup came out really good. I need to do something really tough, like Hitch to see what happens, but it is an alternative :~)

shrink/dvd decrypter worked just fine on Hitch for me
why would they go after decrypter when it is free, and people are paying for AnyDVD....seems like they should have gone after the people selling AnyDVD before they went after freeware.
i haven't even seen DVDFABDecrypter

jer2911tx, you've brought up a very interesting aspect. What were the reasons for the attack on DVDD? Of course we can only speculate based on opinion. Here's mine:
1. Pick on the little guy cause he can't afford the attorney.
2. Go after who is most popular in forums.
3. Knock out the competition (that's another speculation all it's own)
4. Bust 'em, fine 'em, then drop it if they come to work for you.
5. Start with the little guy and work your way up.
6. Start a big ruckus in the forums so they'll lead you to the rest of the programs they're after.
These, of course are opinions, and very theory-ish, but enjoy them as you will! I'M OUT!

I agree DVDFab is ok...it will work on regular movies with no special encryption, but unless they keep it updated, which I don't think they are going to do, DVDDecrypter is still king for the time being. My two cents :~)

well there is one thing about DVDFab.....their Decrypter (the free program) rips the DVD...... but it only does the whole movie while the Express(the one you pay for) gives you the option to rip just the movie! I tried them both and both works fine. I like Express but LOng live the King (DVDDecrypter)

People always try to destroy ways to rip movies but they seem to always fail. They tried to give stronger security but that was broken and now they are going after DVD Decrypter. I see this as something that's not going to last long a DVD Decrypter will come back or a slightly modified version will take its place on top.

They went after DVD Decrypter because of his location and the laws there that allowed them to shut him down. AnyDVD is located in a location that doesn't have those type laws. At least not yet and hopefully never will. Thats just about the same reason 321 Studios got shut down. Its all about what laws are active in a given area. If you can move to a location beyond the long reach of the law and the movie studios that seem to be running some countries, then you will be safe for a while.

Interesting post at CDFreaks from Olli developer of CloneCD which addresses this issue
Quote: 1.): The law in the US and most EU countries won't allow it. Owning & using tools like DVD Decrypter, AnyDVD, etc. is perfectly legal. (Even if a lot of people want to tell you otherwise). Selling, distributing or advertising for it is not. (again US, most EU countries)
Doing it for profit (LUK! at least asked for donations, SlySoft, Fengtao) may even be a criminal offense. E.g., in Germany the max. penalty would be one year in jail. I don't know UK law well, but it is probably very similar.
2.): Macrovision (or Sony DADC, as some people have thought) is not interested in the end user. They want to protect their intellectual property - the copy protection which is sold to the studios.
If the proptection is bypassed, the studios won't buy it and they will lose money. Simple as that. Additionaly, they must fight such tools to protect their customers. They don't really care if LUK! will get a penalty, they want that DVD Decrypter is no longer developed, maintained, distributed, etc.
I assume this is what the agreement is about and IMHO LUK! did exactly the right thing. To settle with Macrovision was the only way to escape, and really didn't hurt anyone we know or care about....
Free advise: Collecting donations via PayPal was probably the reason that MacroVision could find LUK! The "flow of the money" can always easily be traced. Don't offer a tool which copies protected stuff on your own website and don't ask for donations. Unless you are sitting in China or Antigua, of course. Or Switzerland. [/qoute]
