Whoever owns the source for dvdecrypter, and dvdshrink should release it as GPL www.gnu.org, or public domain (as is most linux software), then we can get a linux port going.

The way I understand this problem is that because of legal issues involved that can't be done. Mr Shrink now works for Nero which is why Nero Recode looks alot like Shrink. The owner/writer of Decrypter was ordered not to continue work or updates on it. So we are out of luck unless someone has the knowledge to break them down and start over again.

all the more reason to start off with a GPL license if you are planning on writing a "freeware" app. They can't take that away from us.

Well,
good job Lightning old boy! Love the program amd I will be using it forever and passing it out too.

Sad thing is, this won't make any overall difference, the mass pirating overseas will go on and on and on!!!! I'll rent DVD's but I will NEVER buy one!! New encryption: I'll wait till I see it on PPV, then copy to VHS, then convert to DVD! Just like the good old days!!
Happy Trails and thanks for all your hard work.
Maybe Nero will hire you?

Otherone: Nero DID Hire Lightning... His work can be seen in their newest programs. I read somewhere, Here in these forums, that one of Nero's new DVD copy programs incorporates DVD Decrypter, but without some of the quality enhancements DVD-DC had.

I applaud Afterdawn for keeping the last version of DVD Decrypter available for download.

And, to my satisfaction, my "suite" of dvd ripping proggies includes DVD-Shrink/Decrypter/Region+CSS-Free and Nero.

Oh Yah, and someone said, that they would "never" buy DVD's just rent and rip... Actually, I will rip when I really want to watch something, but: I ALWAYS buy DVD's as the price has been going down. I wait a year before buying a "new" title, then the price goes down to about 15 bucks.

However, a lot of my favourite moovies, for instance, "The Long Riders" which I saw in the theatre... It just became available in DVD and it was only 9 bucks.

So, I urge everyone, go ahead BUY dvds it will not kill your pocketbook. But for someone like me who watches about 1 moovie a night, it is my relaxation... Well, I keep lots of copies of moovies on hand, on DVD *and* VHS and even some Beta!

So, PLEASE Everyone, I urge you, keep the MPAA OUT of our faces, BUY moovies if just one a month... That way, with Sales happening they will be less apt to go on witch hunts for Encryption Crackers.

Lightning was just TOO GOOD- He understood the medium better than the people who MADE ther medium... And therefore he was targeted.

Let not his work be in vain! Buy moovies!

With respect to all the good programs and programmers out there, their knowledge never seems to pay for itself but I must say if you have access to the internet then EVERYTHING is FREE.
Who needs rebates when the stuff is available without rebates or paying?
Theres all kinds of source code on the net let alone every piece of copying, burning, ripping software that is sold retail.
