Hello again, Well my Sony DWU10A turned up and I tried to copy 3Gb of date to a Datawrite -rw, using Nero 5.5.10.28. Nero refused to write the lead out then refused to format the disk (either quick/slow). Had to use DVD Decrypter to finally format. Any ideas? Using XP Pro and latest Aspi drvs.

Ronan, Omonguru, et al. Problem solved Sony DVD DW U10A working perfectly with Pinnacle Studio 8 in Windows XP. Problem proved to be:-
1) Bonehead, ( me ), didnt realise that a VOB file was an MPG 2 file transcribed for the writing process on the DVD. It is simply the video file. Mpg by another name.
2) Nothing in the Pinnacle manual advises you that when searching the disc looking for the mpeg file, ( as a newbie ), that the VOB file is it.
3) The Toshiba set tob box DVD player S210EB which I was using to `prove` the disc, after being told it would play anything except RAM, in fact will not play files on +R or +RW disks
4) Extensive testing in company with my retailer proved that TDK, Verbatim, Discwrite, and several unbranded discs all wrote without a problem.
5) Re loading Windows XP, was caused by windows demonstrating a fault in the software which in fact was caused by a defective keyboard when the machine was started.
6) New Keyboard, reload WindowsXP, load Pinnacle Studio 8 v:4.16, update to v: 8.5.21, test shots on several discs all -R and -RW and it all worked perfectly. Toshiba S210EB played all OK My apologies to any experts aboard, if this is a bore, but it may help someone else who is facing an intractable problem with this type of situation. Now to apologise to Pinnacle Tech support who have really tried hard to help, from 8000 miles away.

Larion, does the drive light blink continuously as if it is trying to access the durned disc?

If so then you probably got it set up wrong. Check the jumpers.

Does the 'puter recognize the drive at all?

Can someone tell me the difference between the DRU-500A and the DW-U10A? Why should I buy the DRU-500A instead of the DW-U10A?

The DW-U10A is OEM, most likely sony will NOT support it. Although mine did come with a 1 yr manufacturer's warranty, I believe it was from the OEM, and not sony, although I can not be sure. It doesn't look as nice as the DRU and has a somewhat less desirable software bundle. Other than that, they're the same. So much so you can update the U10A to a DRU with a firmware update. If they're the same price then get the DRU, but for me the difference was $80, so I just picked up the U10A.

So they are the same, but why should I use the firmware from the DRU-500?

And I heard some problems with a few media types it couldn't read/write. Are these bugs over yet that anybody knows? I want to buy the writer for burning home made movies and maybe backup of some digital photographs.

I've just bought a Sony DVD/R/RW and was branded as a DW-U10AUX, manufactured date March 2003, firmware revision 1.1D, 8 meg buffer. I have been reading all the posts regarding flashing the firmware to make it a DR-500A, but I am not sure if it is a wise decision on my part. Does anyone have any recommendations wether or not I should do this flash?

I also own a Sony DW-U10A with firmware 1.1d.When everything is functioning great, why take the chance?

The combination, DW-U10A+Nero+Ritek, works great for me.

I have a DWU-10a burner ver 1.1d and I cannot get either the DRU-500 or the DWU-10a firmware to update, it just states no valid drives could be found.

Win XP SP1, AMD Athlon XP 1900, Gigabyte 7ZXE motherboard.

DVD is connected as a master on the secondary channel of the standard IDE controller.

Picks up firmware in clone dvd.

Not too bothered at the moment as it does everything I require, but they obviously write these firmwares for a reason, so would prefer to be on the lastest version.

I have just purchased a Sony DW-10A with Firmware version 1.1d. I have downloaded Firmware version 1.1e. Is there anything in that update which would make it worthwhile updating ?

Thanks

I do not know if Firmware v1.1e is 'Official' or not. I found it in one of the messages in this Forum, routed to it, and downloaded.

By the way, to avoid confusion the Unit is a Dw-U10A, not as I first wrote.

Incidentally, all the information seems to be in Taiwanese (?). If anyone can help me with my original query, do they know of a location where the information is in English, please ?

Thanks.

To KenAsh:

I can read Chinese. Can you provide the address of the site where you downloaded the fireware, may be I can do some translation for all of us who own a DW-U10A.

Hi,

I have a DW-U10A which i've flashed to be a 500 with 2.0f firmware. What i'd like to know, is what media have people had sucess writing at 2x or preferably 4x speed with? e.g. datawrite, Bulkpac, TDK etc.? I've tried Datawrite Red 4x discs and they didn't work for me at all (2x or 4x!). I tried some unbranded 2x discs and they worked great at 2x..... Any suggestions?

Cheers,

Kev

Hi.
New to the forum so please be patient.
I've just bought studio 8 and a DWU10A flashed it with 2.0f to a DRU-500A. Is there a nack in getting the program to recognise the burner?...or is this the joy of Pinnacle/Sony.
Any help very much appreciated
Thanks

Iv'e got the Sony U10a drive and Datawrite Red disks are no problem at 4X. Did have problem with Datawrite dvd-rw (1X only). but think it was just a bad batch. No reason for me to flash to DRU-500A and risk voiding warranty.
