You, Sir, are infected.
Run Spybot S&D, Lavasoft AdAware, maybe TrojanHunter too.
Clean your browser cache, cookies and history, first.
Empty your Windows\Temp directory and your User temp directory, too.
Things in there that will not delete are bad news...
Set your browser cache small (30-40MB) I have seen some 300-400MB, LoL :^)
Install SP2 and get all the latest Windows updates.
Run a NAT router or at least Windows firewall (I use both).
When (if) you get your OS clean, take great pains to keep it that way. Be very selective what you install, avoiding Free Stuff and screensavers etc. like the plague...
Let us know what you discover ;^)
(the record is 800+ types of adware/spyware/trojans etc - and on that PC, NortonAV had no complaints about anything!)

Don't forget the BHO driven pop ups. They will not be fixed with any spyware detection. You have to remove them yourself. There is no need to buy any anti-pop up program. The ones I use where all free and I have no pop ups. Already mentioned (spybot, Adaware and Microsoft anti-spy) If you have the latest Spybot or Microsoft anti-spy there is a way to view your installed BHOs in them.

Tinker1, go here to find the goodies:

http://www.download.com/

DDP has the record with 1750; I had a customer recently with over 300 virus' and 1200+ spyware objects. ... it wasn't pretty. The home page was hijacked and popups galore. She had zero protection; no antivirus software or any firewall software or router running Windows XP home. The majority of it was from porn sites.

Good luck, keep us posted.

Zone alarm would not have anything to do with your problem. You need to check the BHOs. Unless the one mentioned above will find bad BHOs I have not seen anything that even looks at them during a scan.

I have not tried that program yet but 4 could mean you have a bad one. I can see you having one from Spybot, Symantec or Real audio. Just take a look at them. You should be able to see what file it is from. If there is not information on it then get rid of it. Best thing to do sine there are only 4 is tell us what they are. Just the Path name. you know c:\lalalal\lalala.

The bad news is that you may have to reformat your computer. I fixed by formatting a friends computer, Norton AV, used Spybot innoculated it from 2,000 plus, Lavasoft etc. Six months later , I got it back . Its not running right , its slow , has pop ups. They took everything out. Spyboy , Nortons , everything. I took out almost a 1,000 " things" with Lavasoft and Spybot, but I could not get them all. No matter what I did I still had a few pop ups. The only thing left to do is format it again, and hope they leave the protection on this time......

The reformatting is not as hard as it seems... I Ghosted the drive before I gave it to them the first time. 30 minutes and they are back in business.

I feel like a Conservative when it comes to surfing the net. I wear suspenders in case my belt breaks....

When I set up a computer I DO NOT get online until everything is in place. I have a router with NAT. XP with SP2. ALL updates.Internet Explorer has its pop up blocker. Norton AV and Norton Internet Security, ie a firewall, again with all updates. I let Norton take over for XP`s firewall.Norton`s updates itself automatically. SPybot install, scan and innoculate. I install Peer Guardian and it updates automatically.

The end result is that when I finally do surf nothing BAD happens. Checking the statistics in NIS. Since I have been on line it has blocked 1879 web ads.

This is done BEFORE I get online for the first time. After the horse gets out of the barn , it`s too late to shut the door. Or in your case a bug has burrowed itself into your computer and you can not get it out. That is why you MIGHT have to format and start over, this time do not forget your suspenders or belt.

P.S Webroot also seems to be a pretty good program, with a lot of good features

Re: 72morgan
LoL :^) Yes - prevention IS the best cure...

next one is stmain.dll etc etc
Huh?
What d'you mean etc. etc. - I thought you said there were only 4 entries?
WTF are they?
My 3 are Spybot, Norton, and Adobe.
I unticked the Adobe (damn that update-thing is annoying, anyway) leaving the 2, they are good, I require them.
As noted, you can eventually disinfect PCs and then the OS doesn't run properly - you must reinstall and then keep it clean...
I can't spend a ton of time on an old rotten OS anyway - it is actually quicker to reinstall (and guaranteed results :^)
I have a BartPE disk (a bootable CDRom) that will start a PC, not using its OS, and run A/V and spyware cleaning products.
But this is just to disinfect it enough to put it on LAN and get any important files off it, before its harddisk partition(s) are deleted.
Sometimes they disinfect real good though, nothing further required - you just never know...

Write your Windows Server 2003 MCPs - now THAT is confusing! LoL :^)

Isn't that the one that does more harm than good? Not sure...

Basic protection is a NAT router.
Your LAN is shielded by Network Address Translation.
WinXP SP2 has a software firewall.
These 2, in combination with basic virus protection (like Norton) and browser immunization through Spybot S&D, should be all you need.
I used to use ZoneAlarm - on Win98 in the '90s...
go to Gibson Research
http://www.grc.com/default.htm
After reviewing the 'Three Musketeers' (my Norton bitches about the DCOMbobulator, but UnPlug n' Pray is vitally important) go half down the page, to ShieldsUP! and test your exposure.
You require a result of 'Total Stealth'...
Damn, Tinker, you are milkin' me out of all my best tricks-of-the-trade today :^)
But, Ciao (as in Mein)
I gotta get some work done.

Define best? I like Norton`s product, but they are not cheap. There are free AV products, Avast is one. Does free make it better, maybe.A lot depends on the person setting the program up. If I do not ENABLE the anti-spam and the Web ad blocking ,then I might think that NIS sucks. Peer Guardian can be set for ad blocking or P2P. If I set it for P2P and I do not do any file sharing then it wont do me any good......A lot of people swear by Zone Alarms. It will come to bit of trial and error on your part to find what works best for you.

Noton Internet Security has now blocked 2045 web ads.
