hi and welcome, let's see if i can get you burning up a storm..
Quote:
Nero version: 6.6.0.1
- not too bad, 6.6.0.18 is latest 6.x version; (i used 6.6.0.0 with zero problems for quite a while myself)
Quote:
Recorder: <FREECOM_ DVD+/-RW4B> Version: 1.34
- i don't see many Freecom drives around these days. anyway, this link seems to have an older version of your firmware, 1.33, and that's dated April 2004!!, so unless Freecom's website has newer firmware, you're gonna have to stick to older blank discs (i know this drive is an OEM NEC ND-1300A so you're limited as to what speed blank media you can buy)
Quote:
Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
Last address to be written: 2286127 (508:01.52, 4465MB)
- 4465MB is burning too close to outer edge of discs. If you use DVD Shrink, set target size to 4300MB in Shrink's preferences thus avoiding outer edge and not sacrificing much space
Quote:
Recorder: FREECOM_ DVD+/-RW4B, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: GSC002 -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- i've heard of these discs but can't remember any details about them, or if they're any good
Quote:
Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)

Write error
- i'd try better blank discs as there's not much else wrong in the logfile

@HugoFSous -

hi and welcome also, let's see if i can get you burning up a storm too..(edit- no we won't as i recognise the problem straight away, your burner's firmware is too old)...here goes anyway.....
Quote:
Recorder: < DVD+RW RW8165> Version: 1.01
- version 1.03 of your firmware is here, but dated April 2004!!, so the firmware is way out of date to cope with newer media.. - http://forum.rpc1.org/dl_firmware.php?download_id=1815
Quote:
Physical memory : 510MB (523248kB)
Free physical memory: 56MB (57964kB)
Memory in use : 88
- sufficient total memory but no free memory left. you need to close down more programs prior to ALL burning/dvd work to ensure sufficient free memory
Quote:
Recorder: DVD+RW RW8165, Media type: DVD+R
- your blank discs aren't being recognised, due to the firmware being so old. this is similar to what you should see -
Quote:
Recorder: HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N, Media type: DVD-R
Disc Manufacturer: TYG02 -
Disc Application Code: 64, Disc Physical Code: 193
- ie a 3line paragraph when the firmware's up to date. The firmware has been neglected by Ricoh since April 2004 (unless their own website has something newer though i very much doubt it). see here for more info as i've gone into much detail on this particular drive/firmware over last few days - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/265841

snippet from the link i gave you in my logfile reply
Quote:
you're gonna hae to use 'older media' that your burner can actually recognise.
- Basically you need to keep finding older blank discs that your burner is able to use, as it's unable to use those newer discs. Or you need to buy a new burner (and i'd stay away from Ricoh, they don't seem to support their products for very long)

let's have LAST section of your Nero log which lives in c:\program files\ahead\nero\nerohistory.log but DO NOT post your serial number which usually begins with '1A21' or similar.

You can differentiate sections via this section divider "====== *** Nero-Burning Rom, History File *** ======"

Back on Dec 8, 'laptop9' was left kind of hanging.
I was of no help and I don't see where you jumped in to clear up the problem.
If you did, please forgive.Age related.

Try burning at 4x my NEC 1300A does not like burning at 2.4X in Nero, always get an error at that speed. And creaky is right you are not using the best of media, IMHO if these are 16x disks I would try an 8x media and see if this works. Just my two cents.

NEC support for that drive shows only the following (referring to DVD-R):
Quote:
DVD WRITABLE MEDIA

a) DVD-R Media (4x/2x, 4.7GB For General DISC)
Mitsubishi (Verbatim), Taiyo-Yuden, PVC, Fuji Film, Ritek
Presumably referring to the actual code that the media presents using DVDinfo, etc, rather than the label on the package.

I too am getting the horrid Illegal disk error. I've checked the firmware, DMA settings, went through msconfig and deselected everything but Nero and still get it. I haven't tried different media yet, but I have messed with record speed. I appreciate all the help.

Hey thanks to the numerous responses in the threads I've poured over, I can now burn DVDs!

I had a similar problem with numerous people -- I could burn CDRs but could not burn DVDs -- I would get the "illegal disc" error.

Lo & behold I was using the Memorex 16x DVD-R !!! I tried several of them from my 50-pack with the same error. You guys were right about Memorex being crap!!! I went out and bought Maxwell 8x DVD-R and it worked like a charm.

By the way, I'm using Nero 6.6.0.15
