Thank you for all the help. It turns out I had a problem with the media, and insufficient power from a failing power supply. I appreciate all of the advice.

You did not follow all of creaky's suggestions.

DMA is still off for this drive, use the link that creaky gave you to turn it on.

You still have Roxio installed, you need to uninstall it. This program and Nero do not get along.

i'm having the illegal disk error, and i'm afraid i'm just out of luck because Memorex has stopped providing firmware updates for my (one year old!) drive. in any case, here's my log, maybe I'm missing something that you all can spot:

In the event that my only option is downgrading or brand swapping DVD-Rs, do you know if I can "trade" at Best Buy for another brand of the same price, or am I just stuck with 100 coasters? Is there any kind of trade available for the drive itself also (perhaps through Memorex since they are the ones who have made it prematurely obsolete)? It was a major investment (on my income) for me to buy the thing, and I can't exactly afford to just buy a new drive. Thanks for any help!

I thinking your drive does not like your disks. CMC Mag are not the best, even if you have a Memorex drive you should still be kind and not feed it this brand. Are these disks 16x write speed, because if they are your burner fw probably is not up to date enough to handle them. Best Buy has a sale on Verbatim Digital you can get 25 for 7.99 they are only 4x but good disks, try these and see if they work for you. Or get some 8x Fuji, Sony, Maxell or Verbatim to see if they work out also.

Just because the drive says Memorex on the faceplate doesn't mean they made the drive, this is the problem with their media as well. They outsource to many manufacturers, your drive is probably fine and as arniebear stated a media change would be the cheaper route.

returned Memorex DVDs to Best Buy, traded for Verbatim... problem solved. I'm just a little dissapointed that my "16x" burner can't actually burn 16x discs. Oh well, lesson learned: don't buy Memorex. :)

Your drive may be able to burn 16x disks maybe just not the brand you bought. As stated CMC Mag are trouble, there are people who have good luck with them, but if you read through the forums you will find the majority of members do not. If you want to try 16x disks again then use Verbatim. Really recommended burn speed is half what the disk states, this makes for less errors. Glad it is working for you though, happy burning :)

Your firmware on your lite-on is original, you are way behind in updating it, which is one reason you are having problems. Current is US0S. Drive is probably not recognizing the media. Go here and dowlnload the file and flash your drive.

Current ver. of Nero is 6.6.1.4 yours is out of date, you need to update your program.
Try the updates and then burn again and see if you still have the problems.

What brand of media is this, I can't seem to find out? You are getting a power callibration error which is meaning that the burner is not liking what you are feeding it, try another brand of media and slow your speed down to 4x.

Do you have Roxio installed, if you do sometimes this program can interfere with Nero, they do not always play well together. You may want to think about uninstalling it. You can then use a program like Roxio Zapper to clean it all out.

BUT, it still doesn't work!!
I did change the DMA for my cd rom drive!!
I never had Roxio -- I uninstalled any other burner I had.
In my add/remove place I do not see any other Burning software!
Now, I also tried with 4x speed as you suggested!!
After all these -- still SAME error "Illegal Disk"

hi, i like so many other fellow users, are getting an illegal disc error i've been trying to research it by reading theese forums but I can't seem to identify the problem.
I am using Nero 7 ultra edition to burn cd-r and dvd-r's. I don't seem to have any problem burning dvd's but when it comes to cd-r's i always get the illegal disc error. the disks are Memorex CD-R's

It is known to create conflicts with other burn engines and needs to be removed. Here is the clean tool. http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Uninstallers/Roxio-Zap.shtml

You are also burning too close to the edge of the disc, set your target size in DVD Shrink or Recode to 4300.
There is also a new firmware for your drive JYS3, but I couldn't find a link to it.
