Hi all, I have a LG DVD Burner 4120B, my problem is every time a burn a dvd that has more than one part ie. movie is split in half, the second half wont play. It gets to about 7 sec into movie and freezes or skips and jump around. Its happened on every movie I've burnt, I have updated firmware, reinstalled drive and software. Nothing seems to work. I have taken the drive back to shop where it was purchased and was told it was my PC not the drive. Has anyone had this problem before? Know of anyway I can fix it or find out if it is my system or the drive its self. Any help would be appreciated.

what exactly do you do to combine these 2 sides of the disc, and please be specific in your explanation.

I am using NeroVision Express 3. I'm not actually burning on 2 sides of the disk, I'm downloading movies in two halfs like you get off Filetopia etc. So when I go to burn I have a menu with Part 1 (first half) and part two (second half) but when movie is playing part 1 and reaches the end it automaticlly jumps to part 2 (which is what I want it to do) but about 7 sec into part 2 it pauses and skips, jumps all over the place. I have updated frimware and software as stated above and reinstalled the drive several times.
What do you think???

I personally don't like using NeroVision to convert files to dvd as the results are usually similar to what you mentioned. I usually go with a different program (VSO DivxtoDvD)to convert the files first and then use Nero to burn the Video_ts folder that the other program created.

maybe the 2nd half was corrupt. How does it look if you watch it from the computer? Also, what type of movie files are these? AVI? MPEG? VOB?

Thanks for all your help guys....

B2D, I will give VSO DivXtoDVD ago, but have used different programs that came with burner (DVD Producer) and have had the same results.

Squizzle, I checked the second half movies several times and when they are on HDD they play fine, not corrupt at all. The are usually MPEG or AVI files.

I tried something different last night and burnt the disk so it return to main menu after part 1 has finished and it works perfect. So the problem only occurs when it automaticlly jumps from part1 to part2. Any ideas???

Also can anyone recommend a good AVI or mpeg joiner, free if possible? Have tried a couple in the past and they just dont work. Or how can I burn the two different halfs as one whole movie??? At the moment its transcoding part 1 then part 2 as seprate movies.

divxtodvd will allow you to do multiple files at a time....supposedly. I've never gotten this to work. I choose multiple files and hit convert and it just sits there and does nothing. Works fine if I do them one at a time. Seems to work for most ppl though.

What I do next is use DVD Shrink in reauthor mode (even if no compression is involved) and combine them. It does the first part in title 1 and the second part in title 2, so when you get to title 2, it's chapter 1 and starts over with the time. Also, no menus are created using this method. Give that a shot, maybe NVE is having issues with the 2nd part, as it appears the 2nd part is valid.

I will give it a go, thanks mate. However I am 99% sure its not a software issue as this happens with different programs. It started doing it months ago and got so bad I couldn't even copy 1:1, shrink was giving the same results as was Nero and Power DVD Producer. I have even downloaded new ASPI drivers and updated to lastest firmware for drive. For some reason I can now copy 1:1 with no problems, its just when the drive has to stop burning one section and start another it stuffs up.
To give a better example I copied an older movie with Nero that was not encrypted, burn was successful but towards each chapter change it would freeze and picture would be destorted. Sometimes it worked its way through some times it didn't. It just started doing it one day, I was still using same media, same settings, hell even the same movies. As I said this side of things seemed to fix it self, but Im sure if I tried burning more than one part with another program it would still go worng, well as I said I have tried others before and they didn't work. I really think its the burner but have had it tested and "everything worked great", "so sorry I cant replace it."

Have used variuos and have all gotten same results. Sony, TDK, Imation, Pioneer, Vemabite, High Grade A++ from PC store I got drive from. All burning at 4x, which is drive max for Minus. Is there any advantage for Plus burning?

by Vermabite do you mean Verbatim? I've never heard of Vermabite.

I'd suggest Verbatim with Super AZO Dye and Taiyo Yuden if you buy your media online, but get them from a reputable site like supermediastore.com or rima.com or meritline.com.

hmmm....so software and media are out of the question.....

Maybe an ASPI issue or firmware?? Check for updates on your firmware and use Nero's InfoTools, that should tell you if you have working ASPI layers. There's one for Nero and one for your system, so check both. Here's an excerpt from a little discussion explaining ASPI a bit better:

<11>What is ASPI and do I need it?
The term 'ASPI' is an acronym that stands for: Advanced SCSI Programming Interface. All the following terms are synonymous: ASPI layer, ASPI drivers, ASPI interface. The term 'SCSI' [scuzzy] is an acronym that stands for Small Computer Systems Interface. An ASPI layer consists of four files that 'lie between' various programs [software] and certain devices, such as CD/DVD-ROM drives and CD/DVD burners/writers [hardware]. Software programs such as CD digital audio extractors [commonly known as 'Rippers'] and CD-writing utilities such as CDRWin use/require ASPI drivers to 'communicate with' SCSI devices. Many people don't realize however, that the files contained in an ASPI layer are also used in systems that *don't* contain a SCSI adapter, or SCSI devices .. for things such as ripping CD audio and burning CD/DVDs.

Yeah mate, have installed current system ASPI updates and firmware two weeks ago. Checked verisons and installion in Nero Tool and all are good.

I did not have any system ASPI files before and nopticed since I have installed them I can burn 1:1 again but problem still there with burning from part one to part two.

I think it has to be the actual drive?

I think we have tried everything, have even brought Plus disks and that didn't make any difference.

The guy I got burner from is an independant PC store owner not a wanker from retail shop. He seems to know what he is talking about and has said that it is my PC not drive or software. He suggested wiping HDD but I wanted to cover everything else before do that as backing up is a pain in the ass. I just cant see how one day its working fine then the next it aint without it being a drive problem. Any ideas on what i should do next? Take it back to shop and wait a week for guy to look at it or wipe HDD???

wiping the HDD is a last resort, I'd make sure I've exhausted all other possibilities before I do that. Have you tried a system restore to a point before you started having this issue? That is if you have XP. The nice thing about a system restore is that if you change your mind later you can undo it.

Yeah, have check for restore point but for some reason is only goes back 2 or 3 months and I was have dramas before this. I know I set a restore point before I installed the drive and sevral in between. I might just take drive back to store and get him to tet it in another machine and see if part 2 stuffs up like it does for me. If it does I will get a whole new drive and all should be good, I hope!

Thanks for all your help, particulary squizzle. I will let you know how it goes with new drive.

cool, but stick to decent media suggestions as per squizzle, avoid some of that other media, or you'll back here with logfiles and such :)
good luck and happy future burning
