I have a new DVD player which plays VCD/SVCD..I had a donald duck avi for the kids so used Nero 5.5's wizard to burn a VCD..all seemed weel until we watched it..no sound..I dont know fi this helps but when I look at the properties of the original avi it says the audio format is mpeg layer-3 and the video is Divx codec..I'm sorry but I'm not a DVD techie so it means nothing to me !!

Problem : Nero is useless for conversion.

Solution : Use TMPGEnc, a free piece of software you can download from this website to do the conversion.

Thanks for that..

I downloaded and ran TMPEnc but it is estimating about 3.5 hours to convert a 10 minute AVI !..this would mean when I come to convert a movie I have split into two avis it could take all week !!
What could the problem be?
I have set it to SuperVCD as my dvd player allows them and I have read that they are much better quality..could this be the problem..

Any help would be appreciated before I try to convert the movie

I wouldn't bother with SVCD for a start, it is longer and almost certainly not worth the effort when converting an already encoded avi file. Use VCD instead, could be twice as fast.

But these things take a long time. I have a top of the range PC with 1GB RAM and even when TMPGEnc is running on its own (no other apps) it still takes hours to convert movies. This is normal, the processing is very intensive.

Thank Paul again,

I had just started a VCD encode when I read your message as the superVCD was 470Mb for a 10 minute movie..and when I tried to view it under XP Media player it said it was missing a codec and would not play AND when I tried to burn the SVCD with nero it said the Mpeg format was wrong so wouldnt burn it !

I am guessing that when TMPEnc has finished I should be able to use the Nero wizard to burn a VCD and not have to do much else ..Am I correct or is that just too simple..if you can recommend another app to burn the VCD then great..

One other thing..should I be able to see the VCD in Media player without having to load any more codecs ?

Regards

Peter

You should be able to see the VCD without any special codecs, but yes, if you are making a VCD compliant with your type of TV (PAL or NTSC) when you load Nero, just use the wizard (which for VCD is fine) and burn it.

Should work in PC and most standalones.

Problem !!!

When I encoded the Donald Duck avi it went smoothly but when I tried to encode the movie avi..all went to pot. When it starts to encode the movie loads of stuid DLL errors happen include read error messages. I tried re-installing tmp but I get the same errors with this file. It plays perfectly in windows media player..except it says it has some sort of protection to stop un-authorised copying...is this something you have heard of ?

Firstly, sorry for the delay. I have been away.

In answer to your question, try downloading an older version of TMPGEnc, some people have been having trouble with more recent versions.

Nice to hear from you again.. I eventually gave up but intend to try again..I found that one of the AVI files had an error in one of the frames so I had to cut out the frame and then join the remaining avi parts together...but it would be nice to have a simple guide but I think it would unfortunately go something like this !!

1. Load avi with package A
2. Split Video and Sound with package B
3. Create seperate .md1 and .wav files with package C
4 Rejoin .md1 and wav files with package D
5. Burn VCD from mpeg file using package E

or something like that...

Is that a fair summary because some of the more modern AVI's found on kazaa contain AC3 audio whihc somehow is different to others...

e.g. Die Another Day(James Bond)

Any simple guide rules would be welcome

Cheers

peter
