i was wondering, could i take apart my 40gb ipod and get some kind of connector that can fit the connector of the ipod and hook it up to my computer as a 2nd hard drive by any chance?
considering the size of the ipod I don't think they have 2.5" drives like laptops, I beleive they're much smaller and probably have some proprietary interface, but I'm not sure
it uses a 1.8 inch toshiba hard drive. It's not worth the time or expense to disassemble a ipod to use it as an extra hard drive.
Also, something in the firmware is proprietory. That is why you can't just buy a similar hard drive to upgrade your ipod to a larger capacity. Check out http://www.ipodhacks.com, they have been trying to figure it out for a while.
However, there are 1.8" to 3.5" adapters out there. So, technically, you probably could, but you'd be better off selling your ipod-specific 40gb drive to someone who is looking to upgrade their ipod, and then buying a generic hard drive. You'd probably pocket some decent profit.

you see trgrpullr the only problem in selling it is that i took it apart "dumb me" and there was this black tape holding the wire connector to this other connector, stupid thing of them doing that because once u take it apart u cant really put it back together unless u really know what ur doing in my case which i dont, so thats y i said that, but i got a mini as of ride now which is 4gb which is alright, but i didnt just want to throw away the 40gb ipod, and dont want to spend the 100's of dollars on sending it to apple factory because everyone said its almost not worth sending ipods to them. Edit: and do you know where i could find that adapter online? because i dont know what name to look it under or what. thanx
