I recently tried to install a modchip, needless to say it was very difficult (i would not recommend to anyone), in doing so i fried my ps2, my ps2 would not even turn on. i bought a new ps2. Now i am thinking of buying swap magic 3.6 but i want to be sure it is what i want. i don't know if you have ever experienced this but it happens to me all the time: you buy something, you are sure that it is exactly what you want but after buying it you find out all these things that you did not know. all of a sudden you need to buy another thing or this doesn't work with that. I don't want that to happen with swap magic 3.6. i have read alot about the swap magic 3.6 but i would like to hear from you guys your experience. does it work with all games, does it work the same as a modchip etc.

I have had SM 3.6 for a couple months now, and it was exactly what I expected. I haven't had any problems loading any games and I have a V7 that is almost 3 years old. It isn't as good as a modchip, in my opinion, but it is a cheaper alternative route. There are some things that you have to do (patches, rebuilding, etc) in order to get certain games to work, but that is nothing that should scare you away. The other thing to look at is a flip top or the slide tool. The flip top is more convenient, but if you don't mind pulling games out manually, the slide tool is only a couple bucks.

As long as you know that you have to swap out your discs for this to work, there really isn't anything hidden about this product! Hopefully, somebody else will weigh in so that you get more than one opinion.

@ theps2guy : Geez man, calm down, it's not like this is a helpdesk, sometimes it takes a while for people to respond....
To answer your question : No, swapmagic is not just like a modchip, Since modchips will allow you to play all backups, whereas some backups have to be patched or rebuilt to work with swapmagic.
Also, with a modchip, you put the backup in the drive, and you can play.
With swapmagic, you have to put the swap disc in each time you want to play a backup, and then you have to swap to the backup (either with a slidecard or fliptop). Hope this answers your question, and next time, try to have some patience, if someone knows, they'll come and help you when they can.

when you patch or rebuild a game what do you lose from the game and can you put an adress where it tells you how to patch and rebuild if you know one?

I can't really help you on that, since i'm a modchip guy (didn't feel like swapping disc's every time i wanted to play a game, which would be inevitable, since i never use the original copies of the games i buy, just the backups)

Daniel you are my idol if you installed the modchip yourself because me i just fried my ps2 all together. if so how hard did you think installing it was and what kind of modchip do you use (if you can't post it in the public page, PM it to me). How does your modchip work you just burn any kind of game with dvd dcryptor and you put it in your ps2?

I soldered my modchip in about 2 years ago and it worked great the first time. You must be very good at soldering, working in small areas and most of all, patience! It took me about 3 hours to take it apart, make the modifications and put it back together again. Yes, I was worried that I could have messed things up but I took a magnify glass and made sure I didn't have any solder that crossed over to other circuits. I also checked the wiring 2-3 times.

I went the modchip route because I too did not want to swap out disc every time.

i had major problems with swap magic,i would say buy a mod chip and send it to somone to mod for you, they charge usually around 30-40 bucks for the installation.Or get a premodified ps2(thats what i did)to save on shipping my ps2 to somone to install(even though most say they will send it back and pay the return shipping).

when i was trying to solder my modchip, i found that sometimes the solder would not stick to the board. did you ever have this problem? what tools exactly did you use for soldering? what watt "solderer" did you use if thats a word. Just give me all the information you can about modchips and soldering, because I am thinking about installing the modchip again. you don't think the modchip is fries, they are not that fragile. don't want to fry my ps2.

I've used swap magic for a year and I don't really have any problems with it. Swap Magic and a fliptop ran me $40. Where as a modchip and paying someone to put it in for me would have ran me at least double that. I'm not experienced in soldering.

It just depends what your preferences are. Swap Magic is an excellent product. After rebuilding there isn't a single game that won't work with it. The downside is that you have to swap disks and it's not compatible with Dual layer or DVD-9 games. Personally I got a modchip. I got a Matrix Infinity and I love it. It direct boots everything. I paid $100 for a pro install ($50 for chip+$35 for install+$15 for shipping). I had teammodders.com do mine. They did a terrific job and I'd recommend their services to anyone. If you've got the cash to throw down, go with a quality modchip like the DMS 4 or Matrix Infinity. If not then Swap Magic is a low budget, good quality alternative. I recommend the flip top over the slide card. If your going to go with a chip, learn from past mistakes and pay a pro. What's $35 vs $120 for a new PS2?

Here's some info which might help:

10. Q. What does rebuilding an iso mean?
A. It means that some games 4.36-4.38GB's may need rebuilt to work with Swap Magic. Games over 4.38GB's will need rebuilt. This isn't true for ALL games over 4.38GB's and differs on a game to game basis. There is no need to rebuild games if you have a modchip.

11. Q. How Do I rebuild games?
A. With Nero and Isobuster (works as long as no single file is over 2 GB's): http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/197949
With CD/DVDGen: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/210515

1. Q. How do I burn PS2 games?
A. Use DVD Decrypter. Guide: http://www.angelfire.com/games6/easytutorial/dvddec/dvddec.html Burn at 4x on an 8x DVD-R.

2. Q. Does the type of media I use matter?
A. YES: http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/240341
If you're too lazy to read, use Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim, Ritek, Sony, TDK, Maxell, Sony or Phillips DVD-R's. Avoid Memorex, Staples, Imation, etc.

7. Q. What do I need to use Swap Magic?
A. With fat PS2 v.1-11: Flip top: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop/page1.cfm
Slide Card: http://www.saveware.com/SlideCardUsageAndInstall.htm
With Slim PS2 v.12-14
Flip top: http://www.chipzone.com/installation/playstation2/fliptop-v12/pag...
Magickeys (also referred to as slide tool, slim tool or, magic switch): http://magickeys.net/
or tape and tissue mod: From Pretense: If the fliptop doesn't work, just give up on it and do a tape and tissue mod. Open up your case again and tape the back sensor (toward the upper left and beneath the hinge part of the lid) with duct tape or even regular Scotch tape (I use several layers to be on the safe side), put the case back together, and stuff a small ball of tissue into the hole for the front sensor (lower right just above the power button).

26. Q. I'm in the market for a modchip or premodded console. What are some reputable sites I can order from?
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/251223

31. Q. I have bills to pay, go to school, or have an expensive drug habit, what is the best mod solution for me, factoring in price?
A. Swap Magic 3.6+flip top=$35. Duo2SE modchip=$20 (if you solder it yourself, NOT RECOMMENDED, unless you're a pro), $55 (if you pay pro).

I am trying to figure out wich mod chip to buy, I am down to 2 options: DMS4 Pro or Matrix Infinity. Which one is a more complete Mod chip. Price is not an issue, I just want the better mod chip. Which one should I get?

What are some reliable site for installing mod chips? Team Modders is temporarily closing down installations. What are some other sites similar to team modders (teammodders.com)?

What is homebrew elf, do both of these mod chips support them?

I've always used DMS chips, but the Matrix is supposed to be just as good. As for your question, i did not install the chips i have now (DMS 4 Pro) myself, i did install my first set of chips (older dsm chips, dunno which ones they where) myself, with a fine tipped soldering pen, and Lots of patience. The new ones i got put in for free, since i bought 2, the guy said he'd install them for me, free of charge.
As for Elfs, go have a look at http://www.exploitstation.com/index.php?page=faq
It might clear things up a bit.

Either one is reliable. I originally put in for a DMS 4 Pro, but ended up with a Matrix Infinity. I love it. According to my mod guy Matrix chips will last you longer. DMS chips seem to be more picky with older PS2 motherboards (hence why I ended up with a Matrix). Either chip is excellent, you won't go wrong either way.

Yeah Swap Magic is a good product. I recommended it to my friend and he's been playing the shit out of a backup of Resident Evil 4 since he got it. But once you make the jump to a chip you'll NEVER go back to disc swapping or owning an unmodded system again. That should give you some clue what having a good mod chip is like.

Yeah nothing wrong with Swap Magic. I just knew after some research a chip would be the way to go. I covered all the bases and didn't want to rebuild games, shrink DVD-9 to DVD-5, or patch games from PAL to NTSC. A good chip like the DMS 4 or Matrix Infinity does all that stuff for you. Swap Magic is a good low budget alternative. I certainly would've have got it if I didn't get a chip. My friend seems very happy with it, every time I talk to him over MSN he's playing RE4, so it just depends on your personal preference. If your ever interested in modding check here:
