any ideas anybody. i downloaded a xvid avi film but when i extract it and try to play it in media player i get an error and it closes down. i tried to convert it but as soon as select the avi in question i get an error and windows shuts down. thankyou in advance for any replies......cheers

run your file through avicodec and then copy and paste the properties into your next post

Here I am, trolling afterdawn, in the pre-dawn. Oh well...

It sounds like you don't have the XviD codec installed. An XviD video file requires the associated XviD codec. It is one of the most popular video codecs around, but Microsoft doesn't include it with windows. You have to get it, and install it yourself. There is more than one XviD codec. The one I would recommend comes with FFDShow. It's a sort of multi-purpose video/audio codec optimized for speed. It has a million features, but all you should need to do is download it, and install it with default settings to play your XviD videos.

this is what i get from avicodec..its wierd i can play the rar files in vlc player. its just when i extract them and try to play it windows explorer gets an error and shuts down... thanks

regsvr32 /u shmedia.dll should fix the problem. If it doesn't regsvr32 shmedia.dll will put things back the way they were. Basically it disables microsoft's buggy media shell extension.
