Problem: random reboots accompanied by BSOD Stop Errors

Solutions Tried: removing all but essentials (hdd, mobo, psu, ram, memory)
reformat and reinstall of xp

Details: My computer was randomly rebooting fo the longest time, and I was just tolerating it. Eventually it reset one time and did not boot windows (bsod during startup screen). I re-formated my hdd and installed windows. about 10 minutes after installation was complete and I was enjoying my OS, it crashed again. I then turned of the automatic re-boot option so that I could read the bsod. it read:

a probelem ... your computer

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

if this is the 1st time ... restart. if this is a recurring problem ... follow steps:

check new hardware/software
disable/remove new hardware
disable BIOS options casching and shadowing

0x00000001 (0x00000000, 0x00000009, 0x00000001, 0xF76CE83C)

i8042prt.sys Address F76CE83C base at F76C7000

Dumping
dump complete

--------------------------------------------------------END-------------------------------------

I then stole the i8042prt.sys driver off of anothe computer, but my computer still reset. This time however, The driver was different that was affected, which makes me think that it isnt so much the driver as it is some part of my computer (likely hardware). I will update this with the name of the driver when I can find out.

Please advise me on how to fix my problem, I just need reliable information, and this seems to be the place to get it. Thanks.

disable your onboard sound in the bios to see if problem stops or not.

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL is a very generic windows error, it doesn't mean much unless accompanied by a file name - and even then, a bad driver often causes a completely different driver to crash the system.

The old GEforce drivers had this problem, but they fixed it, and you have a GEforce card . If I were you, I would probably download the latest drivers for every bit of hardware you have, and think about that - that includes usb 2 drivers, lan drivers everything. have you installed xp correctly ? sounds wierd but getting things in the wrong order can cause problems. Does it happen every 30 mins? or was it a one off. Also, what PSU do you have?

Hi, and thanks for the quick replys, I turned off my onboard audio, so I am basically testing that right now. I will start on Jeanc1's solutions if and when this one fails. XP install is correct (ive done probably 15 or so installs on different computers, always the same way with the same disk, and I actually installed xp on a different computer within an hour of doing my problem one, so xp install is fine. I will start downloading drivers if and when this one fails. The shut down happens randomly, but almost never while computer is idle. I left it idle for 24 hrs, and when I came back and saw that it had not restarted, I thought I had solved the problem, but as soon as I started to use it, it rebooted. My PSU is a "POWERUP switching power supply - LC-B350ATX" 350 watt maximum. Thanks again.

Hi, again. Computer just now crashed after a long run without problems. went for over 4 hours. Still same BSOD error message. I will start updating my drivers, although I probably wont finish until monday afternoon when I get back in town. In the mean time leave any other suggestions here, and I will update this thread when I finish with the drivers. Thanks again.

Updated all of my drivers, still have problems, still in need of help. I realize it may be time to start replacing hardware. My assumption would be to replace the Motherboard first, then on to the psu, and then the processor. please let me know what other options I have. DDP, please come to my rescue again!

Thanks

Yo ddp i am having the same problem, while playing games, my computer just restarts at random times, and according to Microsoft, its my onboard audio "C-Media AC'97 Drivers" problem. Do you know how to fix this? I re-installed new drivers, but that didnt help at all. Thank You!

I downloaded the drivers from the C-Media website, Integrated "C-Media CMI9761A" and the audio controller is an "ATI IXP 300 Chipset" even tho it says IXP 150 on the chip on the motherboard. Weird. This never happened until i got this new motherboard. The motherboard is a SOYO P4RC350. Thanks again!

Its weird, I like have to pay to upgrade my BIOS cuz i have to get it from a different company rather than the company that made my BIOS. I have to get mine from like DriverAgent.com.

uninstall the audio driver from add/remove programs, run ccleaner's issues, defrag the hd than install the driver from the board cd to see what happens.

Thanks for the help ddp, but after trying exactly what you told me to do, I still get the same crap.

that shows that the audio driver is still for some reason "bad"
