well after 4 failures of trying to rip this dvd i gave up and order the dvd from columbia i HAVE A 15.50 ODOLLARS bonus points so it will only cost me 4.50 to buy it and is free shipping so is all good

Creaky is right!!! DVDFab Decrypter is free and works. DVD Decrypter is free and works.
AnyDVD and CloneDVD are great, but are not needed. They are great for people that do not want to spend an extra 5 minutes or so to follow different methods of ripping. I have both and have barely used them. Actually I have only used AnyDVD for movies that do not have ARccOS or Ripguard like Family Guy.
Also, I like DVD Shirnk more than CloneDVD. I say this because with DVD Shrink you have the option to compress the hell out of extra features and in CloneDVD2, you do not.
Here are the free alternatives to AnyDVD:
DVD Decrypter + IFOEdit following my ARccOS guides
DVD Decrypter + PGCEit Following Cynthia's guide
DVDFab Decrypter alone
DVDFab Decrypter + PGCEdit + FixVTS Following Alcohol's Guide
DVD43 (never tried this one though)
Also, possibly SmartRipper can work following my ARccOS guides, but it is not tested).
Alternatives to CloneDVD2:
DVD Shrink + VobBlanker
Any other DVD compression program + VobBlanker

My favorite DVD Ripper is DVD Decrypter. DVDFab may be a tad easier since you will not have to make a PSL though.
Well, if you follow the PGCEdit guide by Cynthia, you shouldn't have any problems with any movie. This will only involve DVD Decrypter and the tools mentioned in the guide.
Now, the PSL Plugin has a wizard mode, so backing up a DVD is a lot easier. This makes the process automated. If you look at the guide that Alcohol wrote, the one screenshot is from the wizard window. There are only 3 steps, rip the movie, make a PSL, fix the movie. Very simple and fast. After it finished, you can go either into DVD Shrink or VobBlanker.
If you follow the link to Cynthia's guide, whatever tool you need, you can download from there (there is a .zip file attached to the guide).
Also, if you look at the guide I wrote, I used DVD Decrypter from May of 2002 to rip the movies. Both had no problems/errors ripping. Once you have the main movie on your Hard Drive, you are fine.
DVDFab has no problem with DVD Shrink, and if it does, it will be updated so that the problem is fixed, or you can do it yourself by using Alcohol's guide. You can always stop by in Afterdawn if you have a problem with any movie. There are always people like Alcohol and myself that will provide answers to problems that do not involve using AnyDVD.
Also, all someone needs to make a PSL is a DVD Decrypter log, the original PSL and the IFO files, so one can be made for you. After the movie is ripped, fixing it to work with DVD Shrink is easy. Just drag and drop over FixVTS and click "Full DVD".
The only tool I can see you needing is VobBlanker, but that is only if you want to get rid of the FBI Warnings, or special features:

I also wrote a guide for VobBlanker that has a few extra steps than in Alcohol's guide. It is almost identical, but I also removed previews, special features, & credits and also stripped the audio/subtitle streams. Hey everyone
I used DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 along with AnyDVD 5.5.5.1 and I burned it with Nero recode first I ripped it to my hd with dvdd in file mode then I imported the files to Nero recode and it came out perfect and I did the whole movie minus forein language. Plus now it is on my hd if i want to experiment with other burning programs. I did have problems with dvd srink 3.2 and with dvdx copy platinum. So I tryed alternatives and got it to work with out a whole lot of problems.
Custom built puter ECS,K7VTA ver3.1 xp2100 clocked at 2400,450wtpws,liton1693sburner,litonSOHD-16P9SROM,samsung sw-248f cd burner..
DVD Shrink 3.1,anydvd5.8.2.1.dvddecrypter.three maxtor drives totalling 180gigs....Nero recode...

ok, i tried all of the suggested programs and nothing, the closest was the clone, AnyDVD combo, and tried AnyDVD with shrink, and nothing happened when i put the disk in the player. I followed als guide step by step and no dice, any other suggestions? Also for the record i tried vobblanker and pgcedit, (see my other posts) I cannot get anything to work and now I have more dvd decrypting and other stuff software than I really want on my computer.

Macrovision Corporation recently acquired the intellectual property rights in all versions of DVD Decrypter from its author, Lightning UK!. As the current owner of the intellectual property rights in DVD Decrypter Macrovision has contacted us to inform that "any license granted by Lightning UK! to AfterDawn for the distribution of any version of the Software [DVD Decrypter] is hereby terminated with immediate effect."
Even though the means used to acquire the rights to DVD Decrypter bore probably more resemblance to the common methods of the entertainment industry, we have no reason to object the request made by Macrovision. They do, in any case, own the rights to the software, and are entitled to enforce any policy they see fit.
The DVD Decrypter install package will be removed from our servers by Sunday, November 27th, or as soon as it is technically possible.
After it's development was ceased in June DVD Decrypter has been surpassed by several other software, such as AnyDVD and DVDFab Decrypter. One of the best features in DVD Decrypter was it's image burning engine, which allowed the burned disc to be verified against the image file. Luckily that feature is now available in Lightning UK!'s new software, ImgBurn.
Edit 27th of November, 2005: We have now complied with the request and removed the software from our site.

i am trying THe Cave & Dark Water for... personal backup:) anyways i just "backed up " both with any dvd & clone dvd2 work great each in under 30 min with my slow azs computer. anyways went to copy those so i dont have to go thru the whole menu thing and analyzing bs i have tryed with Nero 7, easy cd creator (roxio) 6, and Nero burns 80% of dvd and errors out, saying can not read dvd, roxio caches it and right befor e burn says can not read media file, the only other problem i have had like this was with the origonal OC season 1 disk 2 for my wife!!! i do not get it? especialy with these i can make a copy of origonal but not the backup? what gives??? oh, i jsut finished the cave from origonal for 2nd time & it finished fine & looks/plays fine too?! any ideas, sugestions?

i figured it out.... AnyDVD 5.8.3.1 in the background then just run DVD Shrink as usual. 20 minutes later perfect backup

I have the same problem. Used DVDFab with AnyDVD (Newest Version). I Tried CloneDVD with Any dvd. I tried DVD X Copy Express. Nothing seems to work. Sorry no answers here.

I'm doing the cave right now, but why is the audio file so small? to do the whole movie (dvdfabdecrypter/shrink) it said it was to big to fit,so i reauthored just the movie and the 5.1 audio file is 7mb. its burning now. i'm sure i'll be back as the sound cant be right.
