i want to play my ipod through my speakers in my car but i dont have a cassete player and so am unable to use the cassete adapter sold in the apple stores and electrical shops. Does the ipod car charger still allow you to play your ipod through your speakers in your car? or does it solely charge your ipod?

I would imagine it only charges the iPod.

Indeed, it just charges the iPod. But have a look here, you don't necessarily need a cassette player to connect your iPod to your car stereo.

i see, is there no cheaper alternative?, ive heard about a wireless connection with your ipod and playing it through an fm radio station somehow but it all seems very complex, i was just wondering if there is no wire that will connect it straight to a cd player in a car that is cheaper than £60, any help would be much appreciated.

I recently ordered the Monster iCarPlay Cable for iPod...my friend has it and it charges and plays the iPod over the stereo, or you can use it wirelessly and just play it, not charge.

Here's the link
(assuming you use a NANO, to change, pick an iPod at the top)

EDIT: If you buy, don't buy directly from MONSTER, I got one of their $80 cables for $55 (with shipping) from Amazon.com, though they had some as low as $44.

belkin fm tranmitter is compatitable with all mp3 player it's about 40bucks at walmart or circuit city, but you can get one from ebay for like 9-15bucks and even if you get it broken remember there's a lifetime warranty on it you can exchange a brand new one

to use the belkin exchange service you don't a receive and is free shipping :)

a lot of other manufacturer require original receive to utilize the warranty service which sux..

stop hoping, start loving.

I'd say Belkin is a more versatile and reliable transmitter than any other. You get, as evilh0ly says, great warranty deals, and also, it gives me the best sound output of all of the transmitters I have tried.
