Problem with video playback on 60gb iPod

I have a two day old iPod video 60gb. I have ripped some dvd's to video and tranferred them over to the iPod. When I play them, they will play for a few minutes then pause and restart, but when it restarts, there is no sound. I have added some video podcasts and they seem to play fine. I have tried numerous converting programs, and it does the same thing with all of them. Anyone have any suggestions?

Are you using iPod firmware vers. 1.1 by any chance ?

Lethal,
I have about 78 Videos on my iPod, if I want them to run properly I dont want to upgrade to 1.1 right!

no, don't upgrade to 1.1 @ any cost. Is is full of bugs & faults.

The iPod came with 1.1 on it. Is there any way to downgrade?

Here is a link to the 11/17 updater, which contains the v1.0 firmware for the 5G iPods:

Unfortunately, you will have to do a "restore" in order to backrev the firmware. This will require all of your songs/video to be reloaded on to the iPod, but as long as all of your media is in your iTunes it shouldn't be a problem. I have seen posts that describe hacks which will allow you to backrev the firmware without doing a restore, but I have not tried any of these. When I had the problem, I did a full restore.
Interesting note, according to Apple's support page, this updater is listed as Apple's "Top Download". (see http://www.apple.com/support/). Hmmm...and they say there is nothing wrong with the v1.1 firmware?

I personaly have no problem with 1.1. ALthough I dont do much with it. I only copy and paste files to my ipod though it.

The problem with the v1.1 firmare seems to be primarily with the 60GB 5G iPods and watching videos that have been encoded with 3rd party applications. These same videos work fine with v1.0, but have the problem described above with v1.1.
There are also various other problems users have posted dealing with the v1.1 firmware, but the video problem was the biggie for me. I use Xilisoft to encode my videos, but the same problem occurs with other video encoding software. It appears that videos purchased through iTunes work fine (how convenient!).
Anyway, glad yours is working fine. Mine does also, now that I'm back on v1.0. I can live with the other bugs v1.0 has. I hope Apple's next firmware update fixes this problem.

The amount of bugs on the 1.0 are minor compared to the problems version 1.1 has treated us to.
I think that apple may have intentionally set out to tarnish videos encoded & transcoded manually, in an effort to combat piracy and persuade people to buy from iTunes.

You may be right about Apple intentionally crippling videos that have been encoded with 3rd party applications. I hope that is not the case because Apple advertises that the video iPod will play MPEG4 videos. Also, what does this mean for home videos encoded so that they will play on iPod videos?
As a side note, I recently asked the people at Xilisoft if they were aware of the v1.1 firmware problem. They told me that videos encoded with their latest version will now run on the v1.1 firmware, but did not give me details as to what was changed to make it work. It may be that they are working around whatever Apple did to break them. I have not tried this because of all of the other issues with v1.1. Maybe the other 3rd party encoders will follow suit.

To be honest, I think the encouragement should be to just downgrade and then freely encode/transcode your videos. I don't see why third party application designers should have to make a workaround. They laid down the specifications, so if they want to meddle with the firmware, just boycott it ;-)

I have a 60g black video ipod. I only use itums to watch a movie on my ipod with a bigger screen, or copy and pasteing music and/or videos onto my ipod. The only thing is HATE with itunes is that it takes soooooo long to load up my ipod's play list. And MP4 format is MP4 format there is no thing in the program saying weather or not you have used a 3rd person program to get it into MP4 format.

Put it this way, the iPod can easily distinct an iTunes downloaded video from one that isn't.

Yes i looked into it more (over google) and there is a way that itunes to check, but i also found that it does NOT check.
(srry that i dont have the links, but firefox's tabs..... i tryed to only close one but closed them all, sorry)

After going back to v1.0 I haven't had as many problems. I had one problem using Apollo converted files but last night I watched a movie all the way through that was converted with PQ. So, going back to version 1.0 has made a difference.

Another observation about the 1.1 upgrade, you must have it in order to use the new "radio with remote" feature. I bought the radio, which works fine, but the trade-off is the audio freeze problem. Another observation, if you tough your way through the freezes, by doing a quick rewind or fastforward, eventually it seems to overcome the problem and works fine. You have to do this for 10 - 15 minutes though.
I think we're all hoping they don't screw this up with their 1.2 update.
