Do I need to ask for a new Ipod? Mine regularly 'stalls.' It will just stop playing and then start after I am tired of wondering what is going on and I just touch the dial (usually to try to unpause it). Just the slightest touch of the wheel and it will resume playing. Also, sometimes it shows that it is running but I get no volume. So then I reset it and everything is fine. I would say that I get a malfunction about every other time I use it. I did the upgrade of the software when I was prompted to a couple of weeks ago.
Thanks for any help before I go to the Apple store on Thursday!

Few questions, did the malfunction start before or after the upgrade, and what kind of iPod do you have? [Generation and Size please]

Reset the ipod and while it is resetting click the center button down and the rewind or back button this will bring up an ipod diagnostic screen scroll down to find an option that has to do with HDD or hard drive and tell it to do a scan. Then after telling it to do a scan plug it in the computer and let it charge this scan will take about 1 to 4 hours and uses alot of power(thats why i recommend to plug it in)

You can probaly just cash on on the warrenty if you have one. I will be looking for a good reason to cash mine in closer to the deadline.
If you dont have a warrenty, what version is your fireware? 1.1 is bugged. 1.0 is fine.

Just try restoring your iPod using the apple updater.. If that brings you no success, then I recommend you downgrade to version 1.0 firmware. :-)

If nothing works then you are going to need to take the ipod mini apart and borrow one of your friends compact flash card readers and take the compact flash hard drive out of the mini and plug it into the computer and run tests like scandisk. You can search the internet for other programs but do not throw the cf card away because they run about 500 dollars on the market for a 6 gb card. Its a wast when you can just fix it.
Try the first suggestion first

Thanks for all the ideas. I think that since it is fully under warranty, I will take it to the Apple store tomorrow and see what they do. It siezed up on me today while I was running. Just paused for no reason and had to be reset. If this happened once or twice I wouldn't care, but just about everytime I use it is a total pain!
I will let you guys know what they do at the apple store.

Went to the Apple Store today. The guy there reset it and reloaded the software. I will say that when I went running with it later today, I turned it on and it was frozen. The play icon was on in the upper left corner but it wasn't playing. I reset it and it ran fine while I ran. We'll see. Am I the only one having these kinds of problems or is anyone else seeing this?

m3b,
Unfortunately, you are not alone. Pretty much everyone that owns an iPod has either experienced a freeze, or is going to. It's one of the many common faults that the iPod carries.
