I've had some issues burning at 4x so i just bumped it down to ix. Media makes a big diff. i had a v12 that loved memorex and cheap dvds. Now i have a V14 that only likes sony dvd-r's burnt at 1x. it wont even read movies burnt on memorex dvd's.

what speed are the DVD's

I use and 8X speed DVD and burn them at 4X all the time and so do so many other people. 4X is only the standard speed with an 8X DVD
You would burn a 4X speed DVD at 1-2X
Common rule is to burn them at half the speed they are rated for.

The Made in Taiwan Sony Media is decent, not great. It's definiely not in the same league as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim. I've burned 170+ PS2 games to TYG02/Yuden000T02 with 0 coasters. POF=Parity Outer Failures, PIF= Parity Inner Failures. Too much of either can cause boot failures, lags, skips, and freezes. You can measure these with apps like CD/DVD Speed and DVDInfoPro. I recently jumped on the DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM bandwagon. I get the same great results whether I use TY DVD+R/or DVD-R. Pick some Taiyo Yudens or Verbatim's.

93. Q. How can I tell if my burned disc is of good quality?
A. Well besides you using quality media like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim's, you can use a program called Nero CD/DVD Speed to measure the quality of your discs. It measures POF, PIF and gives your disc a quality score based largely on it's precoreded Media ID. In my experience that's the key component to getting a good quality score. A crap manufacturer like CMC Mag won't maintain a great quality score over time, even if you follow all the advice given on AD for successful burning. You don't need to know exactly what PIF's and POF's are, just know the more of them, the more likely your disc will skip, lag, freeze, or not boot at all. When people say CMC Mag or Memorex media is crap, that info is based largely on many Nero CD/DVD Speed scans by burn enthusiaists on CMC Mag media that have yielded terrible quality scores. Try it yourself and see. You can find Nero CD/DVD Speed here: http://www.cdspeed2000.com/go.php3?link=download.html Plextor DVD Burners aren't compatible with Nero CD/DVD Speed. For their DVD Burners you need to use a program called Plextools, which does about the same thing as Nero CD/DVD Speed minus the quality score. You can find Plextools here: http://www.plextools.com/download/download.asp
DVDInfoPro is a popular alternative to CD/DVD Speed: http://www.dvdinfopro.com/
K-probe is a scanner specifically for Liteon Burners: http://www.cdrlabs.com/kprobe/

86. Q. Where can I find good deals on legit Taiyo Yuden's and Verbatim's?
A. http://www.supermediastore.com
Great List of Merchants locally, online, in the U.K., etc:
http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/buyerguides/buymedia.htm

106. Q. Where I can find top notch Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim media locally?
A. This is somewhat of a crap shoot. Big manufacturer's like Fuji, Sony, and Maxell have at one point past or present payed Taiyo Yuden to manufacture media for them. The big companies slap their name on the label even though the discs were manufactured in Japan by Taiyo Yuden. These discs will always be made in Japan. Authentic TY media isn't made anywhere else. Even if it says Made in Japan on the label, there is no gauruntee of getting authentic Taiyo Yuden media. You could still end up with Sony or Fuji media codes. Hence why I said this is a crap shoot. Places like Comp USA, Office Depot, Sam's Club, and Staples will carry Made In Japan branded discs. Again there is no way to know for sure from the package whether these are authentic Taiyo Yuden's. If you don't want to risk getting non TY discs, you can find 50 packs of Verbatim in the afore mentioned chain stores. One other alternative is the Made in Japan High Grade Maxell DVD+R's. They will say Made in Japan on the label and "High Grade" as well. These are excellent media. Remember when using DVD+R's, it's best you have a burner that supports booktyping/bitsetting, and a v.4 PS2 or later. Much thanks goes to kivory666 aka "docTY" for this information. He is indeed the Taiyo Yuden master. The best place to get authentic Taiyo Yuden media is from reputable online vendors like http://www.supermediastore.com http://www.rima.com http://www.meritline.com or http://www.newegg.com

I've read Pioneer drives are horrible for accuracy on PI/PO scans. Maybe your drive doesn't support CD/DVD Speed. If not try DVDInfoPro.

I'd recommend the BenQ DW 1650, but I'm no expert with different burners. I have a Sony DRU-810A (OEM BenQ 1640) cross flashed with BenQ 1640 firmware. It works like a dream consistent 97+ quality scores on TY and Verb media. I'll copy and paste your post in the official DocTY thread, there are people there more qualified to answer that than I. Suprisingly the Tesco branded 8X DVD+R's are MCC also. I've been using Verbatims 8X DVD-R's with TYGO2 dye over the last 2 weeks and they are excellent.

does the benq 1650 support 1x write speed?
Cuz i'm tired of always using 2,4x as the lowest with my current burner from benq?

I don't know Jurgennop, you really shouldn't need to burn at 1x with a newer burner and up to date firmware. Most people I know burn at 4x and higher with great results on quality media. Truthfully I could probably crank it up to 8x with the TY DVD+Rs no prob, but I'm very cautious when it comes to the PS2. With movies, who gives a rip? You'd get better info by asking Doc, but he's not into burning PS2 games. If the BenQ 1650 follows in the tradition of the 1620 and 1640, it should be a fantastic drive. Liteon, BenQ, and Plextor would be my drives of choice, but that's just my preferences from people I've talked to.
