You have the buggy last version of Nero so follow this, from a previous reply by john123:
Quote: Write down your nero serial# and then uninstall version 6.6.1.4 from your system using the general cleantool found here:
http://ww2.nero.com/nero6/enu/General_CleanTool.html
Next, download and install version 6.6.0.18 from the links provided, re-enter the serial# and you're good to go.
nero version 6.6.0.18 updates:
Package 1
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/Nero-6.6.0.18_no_yt.exe
Package 2
http://httpdl1.usw.nero.com/NVE-3.1.0.21_no_yt.exe
About your Nero log...

I couldn't find anything about your firmware for your burner, here is some information about it in another thread:
http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/3/321910
DMA is off, plus you have Nvida drivers which makes it difficult to get DMA enabled.
Quote: === Scsi-Device-Map ===
DiskPeripheral : Maxtor 6Y160P0 YAR4 nvidesm Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : PIONEER DVD-ROM DVD-115 1.11 nvidesm Port 0 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : HP DVD Writer 635d JPS3 nvidesm Port 0 ID 1 DMA: Off
Try enabling your DMA:
http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide005.html
and if that fails read this:

Your LG media, which is rated as 4X media.....

You tried burning this at 8X with DMA off
Info on this media:
http://www.videohelp.com/dvdmedia.php?selectmedia=3254&searchdvdw...
And the odd thing is that this media was not recognized, even though it was read:

Recorder: HP DVD Writer 635d, Media type: DVD-R

Insert empty disc to write to.
(Medium in drive: unknown. Medium required by compilation: DVD+R/RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R DL.)
I would try these fixes.
Install the bug-free earlier version of Nero. Make sure you use the CleanTool.
Get some better media. Look at some threads in the DVD media forum here. I use Taiyo Yuden, Ritek and Verbatim -R media.
Slow the burn speed down.
Enable DMA, if possible. Take a look at the links about these Nvidia drivers and chipsets.
Replace the burner with something else. I don't see any way to update this burners firmware. Someone else may know more about this though.
Frank

Nero 7 ultra has the exact same problem. I used to be able to burn quickly and easily with 6.6 now everything is screwed up. I have installed and cleaned and reinstalled to many times to count. Nero 7 is buggy. I really wish they would issue an update for this problem!

Post your last failed Nero log. Maybe we can sort it out for you and hopefully get you to burning easily again.
If still using 7 the log can be found here:
program files>nero>nero7>core>nerohistory.txt.
Just be sure to edit out your serial #.

I've been using DVD Shrink with Nero StartSmart 6.3.1.17 for burning (it came installed on my Gateway laptop I received in Aug. 05). . . no problems for 5 months!!! Now, all of he sudden, Shrink won't auto burn to Nero. When I try to burn from my hard drive on Nero, I select "burn DVD-video files." I select the file from Shrink that I saved to my hard drive. I click on NEXT but the "burn" button never lights up.
I've read on here to uninstall and clean then reinstall. Would this work for me? Will my serial number work for the reinstall? I try to "update" button but it says I need to be connected to the internet for it to work. I'm on a wireless and have checked the connection each time this happens. Also try to use the HELP button on Nero and it says the "help file cannon be accessed . . . access denied." Help!!!!!!

What I had was a OEM version of Nero with the serial number tied to the burner that it came with ... I had to run a clean tool, reinstall the old version of Nero with my disc (for the s/n), then update Nero to v6.6.0.18 ...

Binkie7: you said . . . It sounds like under 'select back up target' you have 'iso image file' or 'hard disc folder' selected. When your click back up make sure your drive is selected under 'select back up target'.
So is the "drive" the one my blank media is in? I too have been working with DVD Shrink (newest version) for months, then suddenly it stopped after the encoding and Nero (6.6.0.18) wouldn't burn. Thanks in advance for your help

Binkie7 . . . I took a look at the back up target I had selected . . . sure enough I had the "hard drive" selected. Don't know when I changed that . . . maybe I accidentally did it and haven't noticed it until you pointed it out to me. Now working like a charm again. Thanks for you "wisdom" on this technical error. I can always count on someone in Afterdawn to get me through my problem.

Glad we could help ya out!!
Shrink usually defaults to the last option set (burn speed, back up target etc.) so I always double check when using it.

I agree with Binkie, checking the settings is something I do everytime I start a burn session. I'll go through the Preferences menu and then take a look at my burn settings.
Part of the reason I do this is because in the course of answering posts and just experimenting, I change things around. When I want to use Shrink for an actual movie, I set it all back to my preferences. It only takes a minute.

Hi guys,
I have been a lurker on this site for a really long time, and it's taught me everything I know about burning. You guys are really great!
I've recently experienced the same problem with Nero and would like to uninstall it and replace it with the earlier non buggy version. However, I can't find my serial number anywhere. Is there any way to find it on the computer? I'd really appreciate any help. Thanks!

Open Regedit, and go to:
?HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Ahead\Nero-Burning Rom\Info?
Your Nero 6 serial number is there.

Hi,
you guys are really amazing with all your advice. I seem to be having a similar problem. I did the clean remove and re-install of 66018 and the updates, but I can not auto burn to Nero. In preferences I have Nero selected but when going to backup I can not select a Recorder. I am not sure if this maters but I am using a new poineer recorder that is a DVR-110D and I did notice in my other version of Nero it showed this device status Not avaialble and a red x next to it. The other drive on my system is a sony crx-310ee. This came with my new Dell and I think it is a recorder though DELL did not sell it as one, but Nero did show it was one (surprise!). I tried using both drives when opening a disk, but SHrink still does not allow me to select a recoder. I read that the pioneer is a top rated drive, so I bouhgt that for burning and just updated the firmware and would like to continue using it. I have used the Poineer drive to burn with (dare I say) ROXIO and it worked fine. I am really stuck, can some one please help me? thanks

@binkie7, Hey, just wanted to ask you if you prefer Shrink over Recode 2? I use Recode 2 only second to Rebuilder Pro and right alongside ClonDvd 2, but I have been toying with Shrink and wondered what you prefer? I know speed wise that Recode 2 is quicker, but beyond that what else. Also do you have the older version of Nero 6.6.0.18 which allows you to burn automatically?
Thanks

You are going to have to make a choice here .. Nero and Roxio do NOT get along together very well at all .. you need to rid your computer of one or the other .. having them both on your computer together can cause all sorts of conflicts ...

Before removing Roxio completely from you system, try removing InCD from the Nero suite. I have had Roxio Creator 7 installed with Nero minus InCD for over 2 yrs and there have been no conflicts. I guess I'm lucky because not many keep both progs. I still use the sound editor in Roxio for mp3s. I also sometimes use the Roxio copy CD and DVD programs just for a change. JM2C.
Neither program is set to start with boot up. So they are never running together.

I use CloneDVD the most out Clone, Recode and Shrink. But usually the largest TV I watch the movies on is like 37". I try to keep the compression no lower than 65% and I don't see much difference quality wise.
I normally do the full movie (like the menus for some odd reason) and keep whatever special features I want - though I normally never watch them :)
To me at least Recode and Shrink are a toss up. 2 things Recode does that Shrink doesn't is more than 1 copy and it will only store the files temporarily.
I'll probably use Shrink occasionally til it can no longer be used. I do use the 6.6.0.18 on 1 pc and another one w/ 6.6.1.4 I use decrypter to autoburn.

Quality-wise yes, it's a wash ... but Recode is much faster than Shrink
As far as the Nero versions .. I use the latest Package 2 version of Nero Ultra Edition but, only the next to last version of Package 1 ... I don't have any of the other packages on my system anymore ...

What kind of time difference do you get between the 2? Recode - full movie say 70% compression takes about 25 mins approx. Shrink same pc & same deal approx 35 mins. I'm too hyper + my kid usually wants it NOW so I end up opting for Clone or Recode.

I run 2 passes with each program .. and the time really depends on which PC I use (I have 4) but with my really fast rig I can use Recode2 to shrink/burn 8GB to 4.321GB (with 2 passes) in 15-20 minutes while Shrink (set at maximum sharpness and with deep analysis checked) in no less than 35 minutes and usually closer to 45 minutes ... the maximum sharpness adds maybe 5-10 minutes to the process
The BEST program that I've found is ICOPYDVDs2 ... it gives an excellent picture even when shrinking huge movies ... like the LOTR films ... The way that I check quality is to play them on a big screen (45") and zoom the picture to it's maximum ... you can see any artifacts that way ...

hmmm may have to check out ICOPYDVDs2 - not too interested in upgrading to Nero 7 right now.
Your times blow me away - I only do 1 pass w/ no quality enhancements set!

I burn at max on that PC with a BenQ DW1640 ... typical times with another PC (the one I'm on now) are maybe 40 minutes with Recode2 and close to an hour with Shrink, again with max quality enhancements ... and, on my business PC ... ha ha ha .. I'm embarrassed to even tell you 'cuz it's a real piece -- I lease the POS from my wife ...
