Up to 14 hours of battery life
Or up to 4 hours of slideshows with music.
Well the 14 hours is a guideline and is just about the maximum you will ever get out of your iPod nano because it is based on continuous play at half volume, no backlight and isnt touched whilst playing. So you can just get the 14 houts it states but only if you follow these guidelines.

Apple do this because it looks good in advertising. A potential buyer will be inpressed by the 20 hours playback (60GB Video)and will go and buy it and only get say 10 hours of continuous music because of the backlight, skiping through tracks, volume, etc. that everyone reguarly does.

It will increase overall battery life w/o even switching tracks. ;-)
