Ok so im checking the iPod website and i come across the new iPod updater (1.1.1) for iPod with video. I know people with ipod firmware 1.1 with 60gb video had problems but is that a bug or is it fixed in this new one.
I have a 30GB video and have had no problems with firmware 1.1 and i know apple are cracking down on thrid-party products for videos but have they gone even more forward in this crack-down with version 1.1.1.

another addition with the iPod Updater 2006-03-23 is that there is a volume-lock to stop it from exceeding certain volumes. You can lock it with a combination lock and is meant for parental conrol. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303414

I will test it immediately, and will scour the web for any feedback. Then I can tell you guys whether it is or isn't worth upgrading your firmware.

thanks lethal you are a lifesaver, i have put it on my sisters nano but video playback doesnt affect ipod nano (obviously) so lets play the waiting game

actually it's not a combination lock Apple automatically does it and was telling the difference when i put on my sister's ipod earphone and mine(which has been updated) and u could tell the difference EXTREMELY!!!!

Don't know bout others, but since I've updated to this latest firmware (v1.1.1) I haven't had any probs with video stopping and muting.
I've got a 60gig 5G iPod and ever since I updated to v1.1, certain vids would do the pausing/muting thing that a lot of others were complaining about.
I think all of the Family Guy eps I've got on my iPod had the pausing probs. I was going to downgrade, but never got around to it.
I thought I'd give v1.1.1 a try before downgrading, and voila! all seems fixed!
Anybody else?
If you've got a 60gig and you've had pausing probs, give v1.1.1 a try and see if it's good for you too!

My 60GB video iPod came with 1.1 installed. I installed 1.1.1 yesterday and video problems disappeared. I had all the same problems others have complained about -- videos now play through without all the fits and starts. Yay. That was extremely annoying.

i think we have come to our conclusion that the new updater (2006-03-23) has no video playback problems for the iPod video

There are no video playback issues as far as I know, so _maybe_ they have been amended. It also offers volume control, which is rather futile I think.
Update if you need the volume control feature.. otherwise, stick with firmware version 1.0.

I understood there were some bug fixes which v1.1 was intended to improve (faster menus, less lag time when starting video, etc). Has anyone noticed any improvements on the video side (or other improvements) that would make it worth upgrading to 1.1.1?
As you can tell, I'm still a little gunshy ;)

Hi ive had glithes with the volume for the v1.0 f/w but the v1.1.1 updater took care of that. also the volume lock helped me out alot(unfortunely). my friends kept blasting the volume and blowing my headphones. ive gone through 6 pairs of headphones b4 v1.1.1. so i think its a good idea to have the v1.1.1 updater

I read on Apple's support site that the volume limiter was adjustable and that if you set the limit to the maximum volume level, it is the same as if there was no limit (i.e. the way it worked before). Does it set a default volume limit? Is that why people are complaining about this feature?

When I updated, the volume limiter was set to max volume, so I didn't have to adjust it at all. Basically, it looks like the normal volume bar and there's a small arrow below it showing what the max volume will be during playback.

The volume limit feature is mainly for health-conscious parents concerned that their child may sustain damaged hearing through having their music on too loud. If you own & manage your own iPod, then this feature is rather useless to you.
So far I still have yet to experience any video playback issues, so I belive you guys who are sceptical about updating should consider upgrading.
..should you become unhappy upon upgrading, it's extremely easy to rollback to v1.0..

One question, though. You said that rolling back to 1.0 is extremely easy. Other than doing a full restore, what other way can I roll back to an earlier firmware rev without having to re-copy all of my titles?

what about the back light, on 1.1 you couldn't turn it on with menu its thats still the case ?

I just updated to 1.1.1 and indeed video seems to work fine now, prior I had reproducible problems with large video files, sound stopping etc-etc. I guess these people realised that 1.1 was ruining iPod reputation.

Glad I've put your mind(s) at rest.
Downgrading is extremely easy.
+ Download the latest version of iPodWizard http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=153441
+ Extract & Load iPodWizard
+ Connect Your iPod to your PC (making sure iTunes, iPod Updater, and any other iPod applications are closed)
+ Click the 'Downgrade Firmware' twice.
+ Open the Udater you want to downgrade to.
+ You will be able to click 'Update' rather than just 'Restore'.
+ All done - you are now running the downgraded firmware with all of your iPod's media content still intact.

Thanks, Lethal! Sounds easy.
I've had this v1.1.1 update on my iPod for several days now and have watched many videos. I haven't found one problem with this update. I think the extra time it took them to get it out was worth it. After their last snafu, they must have decided to thoroughly test this update.
