do you know what firmware version your ipod is running on? if its 1.1, then you shuld go to the apple website and try to install the new updater. It can be found here: http://www.apple.com/ipod/download/

Also, try restoring your iPod, this might fix the problem. But beware, as this will completly erase your whole iPod and return it back to factory settings.

My last solution is that maybe you should try reinstalling iTunes, and no, you wont lose your music once you've uninstalled it. It can be found here:http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/

Uninstalling iTunes doesn't delete any audio/video files, just the utility itself.
