Neph: I might be, but I'm not going to be touching it until I feel OK to tamper with my expensive new build - I figure if I paid for a warranty (don't worry it's not some ghastly 3 year extended warranty for megabucks, just 1 year on site) I should use it. I rather fancy using it at stock at first!
After all, unlike you guys this PC is a major step forward for me, not just one in a long line of computers, from an XP single core 32-bit, to an X2 dual core 64-bit, with all the trimmings, extra RAM, bigger GPU, Raptor hard disk and so on and so forth. I've put off reformatting this unit (which direly needs it) because of its RAID, and therefore the new unit should seem even faster by comparison. At present, I'm not about going faster for faster's sake. Unless I can really use all those MIPS, I see no point in getting more!
Rest assured though, with an A8N-SLi, a Zalman cooler, Arctic silver and a well-ventilated case, Overclocking is expected of me right?

WTH?
i thought you were getting a X1900XT?
ATI with Nvidia chipset?
i think the thing holding me back is my crucial ram..
i want to get the 7900GT but i have ati crossfire motherboard..
sooo.. i am going to get the X1800XT i think.. i dont THINK have enough to get the X1900XT.. if i do i will get a refurb..
but.. the 1800 included 3 games and was retail.

BTW: i was looking into the DDR2 ram... why does it seam less expensive than the standard DDR? (pc3200) easier tech or somthing?
and if i am wanting to build a desent conroe system soon..
i have to know this crap this time..

It Looks Like Intel Is doing a AMD if you know what i mean.. On the conroe, it seams like they are getting that "More performance Per Clock" thing that AMD had.. I really think AMD could be in trouble.
But if they get the 2nd Gen of AM2 out in time.. maby they can save some of their advances on the Intel corp.

but i am going to see the shuttle launch today.. hopefully all will go well ... NASA said that they were taking a RISK about the foam comming off of the shuttle.. theirfore leaving the shuttle to burn up.. :(

but their is my good moring talk.. i dont normally get pissy in the mornings.. :)

SAMMORRIS: that Looks Like a kick ass system.. but 1 questing.. what CPU is in that bad boy again?

Thanx,

Nope, that's not true at all. The route conroe took was the band-aid route. They speeded everything up but still don't have the memory controller on the CPU, or the fsb system AMD uses. It will take a major re-design to accomplish what AMD has done. Just because a CPU is fast doesn't mean that it's efficient.

Benchmark racing is one thing because while you can make the CPU run very fast, real world speed is what counts. The CPU is only one part of that speed. In other words, how much work can be done in a given clock cycle. Aside from not being as efficient in memory management, Intel has a bottleneck with the fsb! The effective fsb on an Intel is 1066MHz total (2x533MHz) for both cores, while the fsb on the AMD is 1000MHz per core which is effectively a 2000MHz fsb! There's a very simple way to explain why this is. If you are running water through 2 pipes, a 1" one and a 2" one. the 2" one can flow more water at the same pressure. What Intel has done is raise the pressure to force more water through the smaller pipe which is less efficient!

Intel has a lot of work to do to catch up to AMD's overall architecture! Look how easily AMD gave the 3800+ and the 170 Opteron some new muscle without a major re-design. I know someone who has their 3800+ running at 2.9GHz stable. That's a 45% increase in processor speed! AMD is far from being in trouble!!!

Wow, thanks for all the info guys!

theonejrs, I got a 404 with the link you gave - is it just me?

crowy thanks for your link as well, very informative.

I imagine I'll be ready to take the overclocking polunge when the performance of my system isn't quite doing it for me anymore. My new two month old setup is soooo much faster than my old one that I'm still floating in the clouds when I use it :P

I went from a P4 3.06/1GB PC2100/Radeon 9800 Pro to a 4200+/2GB PC3200/eVGA GeForce 6800GS. Just a little difference!

I have managed to OC my 6800GS a little using coolbits :P I bumped the core up to 515 from 490 but unfotunately the memory became unstable with even the slightest bump up. It probably has to do with the fact the my card comes from the factory already overclocked and the memory was most likely already at its limit.

FISHNERD: am, did, have! It's Sweeeeeeet.
DDR2 is AM2 only for AMD, you know that right? The CPU is an X2 4200+ and kicks @ss!

How do you like your rig, neph? With the same amount of RAM and same CPU we should be on simiar lines, although I confess i got an X1900XT rather than a 6800GS!

I'll post some pics in the hounds thread when I get access to one of our cameras.
My only little irk at the moment is that the raptor is very noisy. Meh, who cares, it's not obscene and it's fast!

Rick5446,

Here you go Bro!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103631

There is no venice core for the 3800+ in socket AM2, but for $145 and change for the Orleans Core.... A new MB & DDR2 memory will be needed, but it should keep you going for a few years. You could then upgrade the processor to a Dual-Core and be right in the game. The 3800 Venice is a socket 939, which is on the way out!

If it was me doing a build right now I would opt for the socket 939 as you could use your old PC3200 memory and the prices of socket 939 motherboards are coming down and you can still go Dual-Core in the future. For right now until the memory folks get their act together on DDR2, socket 939 is the way to go. For now it also performs better!

Have a look at that link to Newegg that you posted.
They're showing the AM2 3800 dual core with an operating frequency as 2.4GHZ??
Must be a typo.

crowy,

No, it's a single core. The venice is also a single core. All the 3800+s that rick5446 listed are single cores. They run at different clock speed than that of the dual-cores. Check the link and scroll down to the specs and you will see that this is correct. I almost did the same thing myself. The Orleans chip is the AM2 version of the Athlon 64 3800+. All the rest are socket 939. This is a good buy at $145 if you want to go the expense of a new MB and DDR2 memory. That's why I would spend less money overall for the Athlon 64 x2 3800+ which runs at 2.0GHz and build it using my existing DDR400/PC3200 memory. That would give you a much faster computer for less money spent.

FIHSNERD, Crowy: It's awesome, cheers!
aabbccdd: yes and that made me jealous until mine arrived!
FIHSNERD, rick5446: nah not AM2, 939 is just as good and cheaper too! There's no futureproofing to be had with AM2 whatsoever. I got a new system post-AM2's release with a large budget and chose 939, because I could get better value memory and it's cheaper overall for the same performance. Go X2 3800+ though, that's a GOOD processor.

Hey Guys,totally off topic!!!

In Pharmacology, all drugs have two names, a trade name and generic
name. For example, the trade name of Tylenol also has a generic name of
Acetaminophen. Aleve is also called Naproxen. Amoxil is also call
Amoxicillin and Advil is also called Ibuprofen.

The FDA has been looking for a generic name for Viagra. After careful
consideration by a team of government experts, it recently announced
that it has settled on the generic name of Mycoxafloppin. Also
considered were Mycoxafailin, Mydixadrupin, Mydixarizin, Dixafix, and of
course, Ibepokin.

Pfizer Corp. announced today that Viagra will soon be available in
liquid form, and will be marketed by Pepsi Cola as a power beverage
suitable for use as a mixer. It will now be possible for a man to
literally pour himself a stiff one. Obviously we can no longer call this
a soft drink, and it gives new meaning to the names of "cocktails",
"highballs" and just a good old-fashioned "stiff drink". Pepsi will
market the new concoction by the name of: MOUNT & DO.

Thought for the day: There is more money being spent on breast implants
and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040,
there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge
erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them.
Regards Crowy.
