Not the Dell because of the batteries they use. Dell laptops are banned on US airlines because of how frequently the batteries explode. Not Dell's fault, they just picked the wrong supplier, however I'd avoid their laptops as a precautionary measure. That second lappie's pretty good anyway.

They explode? What, do terrorists plant C4 in them instead of the lithium ion core?

Lots of good stuff for cheap. They even list a Conroe 6400! It's a very good time to build a back-up computer!

Hmmm $460 for an E6400 and Intel board is quite good I suppose. However, I daresay that a board that performs around that Intel board could be had for £80 in this country and the CPU is £180. £260 I make about $490. Considering we pay VAT, is that such a good deal? The ones that interest me are the Biostar $100 A64 one that you listed, the Sempron deal with 512MB RAM included, and the PD840.

I would avoid any boards by MachSpeed though. They might sound cool but my experiences tell me otherwise. I actually had to RMA two MachSpeed boards and the second one fried a Sempron 3100+ I was using. I eventually got the Biostar TForce you can see in my profile. Needless to say I needed to get a new Sempy too.

IT IS DELLS FAULT!!! lol

They just plain have low quality builds and they way overcharge for everything.

And my Dell dimension was uber loud because of a 10cm fan exhauting in the back to draw heat off a passive cooling solution. After getting a 2.8GHz Northwood I swear the stock cooler is quieter than the Dell cooler.

BTW. Take a look at the systems in my profile all and see the shopping I've done :P

In my experience Dell PCs have actually been quite quiet. It's nothing to do with Dell I assure you, but will be if they don't change their battery types! LOL

Estuansis,

That Dell 3000 is at the bottom of the list. The nicest think I could say about mine is that I sold it for a profit! That was the only good thing about it! Of course there was nothing wrong with it that a new MB, memory and PS wouldn't cure! LOL

so ive came to the conclusion of having a intel core duo processor,160gb hard drive,2gb of ram and a nvidia geforce go 7600 128mb dedicated which also run media centre and vista when it comes out.the laptop also has built in mic, bluetooth and camera.it will cost around £1040.00 for this high spec machine so thats not bad considering it will play nearly every game.if i get it ill report back of what performance is like playig hitman, prey, doom 3 etc.

crowy,

Does DFI have a MB that supports DDR400, AGP and my D940 dual core? Power regulation is what did in my Asus. That and an inadequate power supply. I forgot to factor in the new video card and I ran out of watts! I figure I might look at a DFI and see what they have to offer. hopefully better power regulation with more than 3 stages!

Thanks,
theone

crowy,

Sorry, it doesn't do Pentium Ds! This is for my D940 3.2 Dual-Core. The only real snag is that I want to stay with DDR400 because it's still better than DDR2, for now. I see latencys dropping so I guess they are slowly getting a handle on DDR2! They've still got a ways to go yet.

Happy Computering,

I suppose Intel boards give you the option, with AMD you're forced to have one or the other.

That's why you can choose between the two. If you don't like one then get the other or vice versa.

Although since typically if you want to choose between DDR and DDR2 you need to change motherboard, it may as well mean changing socket (DDR obviously with 939 and DDR2 with AM2) Of course, Intel doesn't require you toc ahnge your processor, but if you're changing your board it may be a good opportunity!

I suppose intel is geared more towards the mainstream and ease of use while AMD is geared towards enthusiasts and DIYers.

That was previously the way, but now it's the other way round. AMD's products now perform better at stock configuration than Intels do for the same price, so they should be the mainstream leaders!
