Here's a few things you could try:
1) Rebuild the game
2) Use better media (Taiyo Yuden, Verbatim DVD-R 8x, burn at 4x max)

Also how do you load your backups

What media is it? And is that for PS2 backups or just general DVD burning? Follow what I said before about using better media should help.

Hmm, I don't see it in the top list? I assume you are referring to a list like: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm ?

Try the suggestions above (better media), we are here to help and not to make you spend more money than you have to, and if there's more than one person telling you that you've done something wrong, it doesn't hurt to try it out right :)

are you backing this up from an original disc?
I don't know about your media, but if you have that many games that work fine and have never had a problem with them then your media SHOULD be ok. Although i do agree it may be time to switch to a better media once they run out.
If it was downloaded then it may be that you just got a bad copy and nothing you do will work.
Or if it is from an original you may want to look at a few torrent sites and find a copy and download it, as that may work on the first try.

Other helpful things are to see if there are any firmware updates for your burner online. Even something as simple as a change in the media code between one batch and the next can make a difference in how well your burner handles the media.
Run DVD Decrypter and post up the disc ID/media code that it gives you on one of your blank discs.
