How do you merge a subtitle file to the movie?

I'm having trouble trying to merge or embed a subtitle file (.srt, .idx, .sub, etc.) to an AVI movie.
I'm using Nero vision (version 3.1.0.7) to burn movies to dvd but it doesn't support separate subtitle files. I know that their are other programs that support separate subtitle files, but those softwares can't make a title menu for the movie.
So can someone please help with this, with step-by-step detail, please.
Thanks,
Vu

Try FilmMachine http://members.home.nl/thefilmmachine/ You can convert avi -> dvd (with substitle and menu)
Note, change your subtitles to .srt format first.
to do that, you can use software Subtitle Workshop
I think DVDSanta is the best, but is it not freeware...

So why you don`t merge those subtitles using that Subtitle Workshop and if you need to, you can merge .avi files with software Virtualdub(MOD)
And just in case you get an idea to burn that subtitle to a film. Do not do it. Just use program what support external subtitles when you convert it.
