Ok we are going to do something a little more technical. First I want you to make sure the device is removed from the control panel. Then I want you to turn off the computer. Open the computer. (make sure you touch something metal to eliminate any static discharge!!) Disconnect the drive in the back. The connection will be the IDE cable. You do not have to disconnect the power supply unless it is in your way. You also do not have to remove the drive from the case. All we are doing is disconnecting the IDE cable.

Reboot the system. Now the computer when it reboots will not recognize the drive because it is non-existent. Double check the control panel to make sure it is not listed. Then shut down the computer. When you shut down the computer will save the current settings.

Now reconnect the drive or the IDE cable (and power if you had to disconnect it). Now reboot and the machine should recognize new hardware. Let Windows search for the driver. Test it and see if it works.

If it doesn't work the other driver I was referring to came with the drive either on a floppy (old news) or a CD. You do not have to disconnect again, just go to the control panel and tell it to update the driver. You may have to point to the place where the driver is located. For instance it may have a Win98 folder, WinNT folder, etc. You will need to point to that folder and then to drivers folder. Computers are smart as the people that manufacture them. If the computer does not know where to search it will give you an error.

I hope this made a little more since! Good luck.

ok... so after doing everything else except for housecall i did the hijack scan. BTW do you want my ad aware scan log? also i like the Spybot scan program. It discovered 94 problems on my pc such as...

OK. We're starting to look a lot better. My main objective is to first get rid of all the malware within your system. I'm glad to hear Spybot discovered so many things.

Housecalls is the best on line scanner. Just for my future knowledge, did you try the ActiveX or Java version? Sorry that it gave you problems. Let's try another before we go any farther. Try this one: http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan?NRMODE=Published...

Post back a HiJack This! log when completed or if you have more problems with the on-line scan.

Other things I noticed:
1> Internet Explorer is out of date. I noticed that you have Firefox installed, is that your default browser? If it isn't, you need to update Explorer.

2> It seems that you don't use an anti-virus scanner or your scanner is not active. Only an anti-virus scanner can protect you against new viruses.

3>There isn't any active process of a firewall on your system. Reasons maybe:
(1.) You are using the windows firewall or a hardware firewall.
(2.) You are using a firewall of an unknown vendor.
(3.) You are using a firewall, but for unknown reasons it is disabled
(4.) You don't use any firewall at all.
I recommend you use a firewall.

Ad-Aware SE is not a anti-virus. You may need to get one. One location is download.com look for AVG free. This will give you the protection dolphin2 is refering to.

Open Internet Explorer and goto the Microsoft Update site. Install all updates. Then go back to the on-line scans and run them with Explorer (not Mozilla).

Windows firewall is very weak. Not good protection as it only works one way. Mozilla's firewall is only active when Mozilla is open. Again, not good protection. There are several good free firewall programs that you could use.

Ad-Aware isn't an anti-virus program as syxguns said.

Get these few things sorted out and then we can get rid of the rest of malware on your system. When that is all gone, then we'll work on the CD/DVD problems. While I know this wasn't your problem to begin with, we need to take care of the most important things first.

@ dolphin2-
I don't know if it matters but according to the picture petjelly shows she is not using IE. Wouldn't that cause conflict trying to download IE updates? I wouldn't think it should for the windows updates.

@ petjelly
IE now has a new version with tab surfing. You might update your IE to that version. I like it better than Firfox.

Good catch syxguns!! I didn't notice that.

Please, you must use Internet Explorer to update it.

IE7 is still in the Beta (testing) stage. I wouldn't recommend it at this time. After we get all the problems solved, then an update to that would be OK.

RE: No IE on account, can't be sure but you may not have IE enabled for access, clik on "start" look for "set program access and defaults" (should be below control panel if you have it to show if not, clik on "start" then right clik on any free space then clik "properties" ,"start menu tab", "customise", "advanced" use scroll box and tick "set progs access and defaults" then clik ok then apply it will now be in the start menu list) now after ciking on access in the start panel list clik "custom" in the window that opens tick the box to enable access to IE ,if you still can't access IE go into add/remove look at left for "add/remove window components" put a tick in the IE box and clik next etc and then make sure IE is able to be accessed in set progs and defaults

As for WININET.dll chances are one of the malwares had embedded itself and using AVG it in advertantly damaged that prog, i'll leave that fix for dolphin2 ,tho you should be able to undo any changes by using avg's reinstall feature as by rights it should create a backup of what it deletes

Just a quick question does your harddrive have two partitions the one i'm asking about should be around 5GB in size

dolphin2 i asked the above question of jelly as it will be a recovey partition assuming there is one,as you know comps these days come prebundled with that partition in case of emergencies by using F10 ??,
it will automatically put the comp back to it's factory shipped condition (there's two options a full reformatt and reinstall or just a i think it's software and drivers only but leaves any other installed software folders there but will need to be reinstalled ),don't mean to stand on your toes i just figured if worst comes to worst it is just another option :D

PS: jelly once your backup and running amok on the web :p,i advise you to learn a bit more about security best practices while surfing, some sites that have free newsletters and will give you a bit of knowledge on what to look out for, just google for the stuff below as they all have helpfull info emails and great software downloads tho some software is not free
microsoft security newsletter
pc mechanic
cnet = they have numerous news letter emails and there articles on protecting ones self from viruses and spyware.
pc world
info packets gazette
extremetech.com
techrepublic

lastly you need to be careful installing 3rd party software like coolwebsearch and all other software unless you know the site, you can always google and ask "is coolwebsearch spyware" also quickly browse thru the ULA of the software look for key words like, tracking cookies ,collect info etc, don't get me wrong such wording doesnt mean it's all bad as some products require such installs for auto updating etc you'll understand what i mean and you'll pick up the bad software the more experianced you become, smelling a rat will become 2nd nature

Do NOT reinstall things with AVG. You'll only be putting the virus' back into your system.

What has happened is exactly what scorpNZ said, quote "As for WININET.dll chances are one of the malwares had embedded itself and using AVG it in advertantly damaged that" unquote.

I hope you have a Windows CD. If you do, insert it into the tray. Close down the spash screen that opens. Goto Start > Run. Type in "sfc /scannow" (without the quotes). When it is completed, it will just close. It will take awhile, so go get a drink and snack. :)

EDIT: If you don't have the Windows CD do the following:
1>In My Computer go to: C:\Windows\System32.
2>Locate the WININET.dll
3>Right click and rename it to Wininet.dl
4>Close down all open programs and reboot
Windows will reinstall the WINENET.dll automatically

Internet Explorer should be located at "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" Locate it from there and run it to do the updates. It will say it isn't the default and do you want to set it as, your choice.

@scorpNZ
At this point, we don't want to do a format or reinstall. There would be to many things lost and reinstalling doesn't alway solve problems. Sometimes it creates more!

Don't worry about "standing on my toes". I always welcome other methods of fixing problems. My methods aren't always the best, or the easist.

WININET.dll is found under c:\windows\system32

Open windows explorer to locate the file. This may give you an easier method of seeing it. Then follow dolphin2 explanation of changing the file name.

@dolphin2- I didn't even know that! See teach and learn! I'm glad that you noticed there wasn't a AV on the machine. Looks like there are more problems then I originally anticipated!

EDIT: was to correct quote!

You will not find it using run. You have to use search or look in the path you were given.

The dll in question is a Windows system file used to connect to the internet. Windows will replace most system files on it's own if found missing on start-up. Key word there being most!

Once we get the AV problems solved the next step is to get a firewall up and running. Then we can get back to removing all the malware that's still left.

To find the .dll
1-clik start
2-open "my computer" so you are shown all drives on your comp
3-open drive :C (you should see a few folders)
4-look for the folder WINDOWS (if it's not there. Look at the left side column clik "unhide contents")
5-open WINDOWS folder and scroll down for the folder "system32" once you've found it you can use the search function or do it manually to locate the .dll ,it is also possable to download a replacement at http://www.dll-files.com/

Try not to surf the Internet. When you do you will continue to build upon your list of objects that need to be removed. Try to keep your Internet activity limited until we have time to get the problems resolved.

scorpNZ is right. That is another way to detect the file you are looking for. Just make sure to select, "Show All Folders". I am just use to using windows explorer.

We need to start from scratch to get your machine fixed. Make sure you have the latest updates for you Ad-Aware, Spybot, and AV. If you don't have it, you may obtain windows defender at windows.com. Reboot your machine in safe mode. In safe mode start up programs won't run!

Now run all the programs I mentioned. The last one to run is your anti-virus. Last but not least when you are done running all the programs run another HjT. Save the log then reboot the machine in to standard mode. give us the HjT log to look at. If you have any viruses that you are not able to remove please include the virus name and location. i.e. c:\windows\system32\virus_name

Do not worry about the fact that pictures are not showing in your browser. The first thing that we have got to do is clean your machine. If you did not notice my posting before, try to stay off the internet. This is where any viruses and maleware root from. We need to get your system clean and then we will address the other issues. Okay!

Thanks
