The decision as to repair by a technician is hers and don't you think petjelly has already thought of that and instead wants to give it a go at repairing herself, there are some of us who prefer to DIY, you have already voiced your opinion in your first post and that for the most part has been ignored and you repeated what you had already stated earlier in your 2nd post with a few smartass comments thrown in to get bites i have no time to spare to humour you any further C.U
Well said.

Good show dolphin2!

The other thing that dolphin didn't mention was, if you take the time to look at the post more carefully, petjelly is running XP & not ME!

Now the only reason I suggested for her to get a new drive was because of the sale on the Lite-on drive. I am even buying one because it is always good to have a backup.

I also noticed in your post that many of your comments were directed at me as well. I also take offense to that!

petjelly please ignore the last few post and let us know if a new drive does the job. Like dolphin2 said, everything is in order as long as you take the time to get a firewall & MS updates. I think (please notice I said, "I think", if anyone is going to try to judge my opinion again!) that it is the drive. Your software issue is out of the way, and the only other thing I can think of is replacing the drive.

On your previous drive we updated drivers and you were still not able to read. We cleaned your o/s and you are still not able to read. I hate to suggest for someone to spend money, but I must admit this particular drive is a good one, and normal price is in the $60.00 range, they use to be in the $100 dollar range! Good luck and let us know how it works out for you.

@syxguns & dolphin2

have been following the thread from the start to see if I could get some idea why my drive won't read certain cd's, aint had any problem until I put in a drive (combo drive - GSA 4166B), it reads some media, but doesn't even recognize others, like no disk inserted.
Only problem there is that I've got a butt load of the "other media" . I realize this might be worthy of another thread, but,, while we're here. just let me know if i need to start one.
By the way,,, you guys just really rock,,,,awsome

Welcome to Ad! Yes your subject is worth a new thread. Start a new one and you may PM me with the thread link. Let me know what steps you have taken so far and put the details of your drive on the thread. That way we can start from scratch.

Thanks

petjelly-

With the XP disk you should be able to do an update on your O/S. This will restore any files in your registry, but I will warn you now that you are liable to lose information in the process. Make sure you have a backup of all of your files.

The last time I formatted my machine and re-installed the O/S it took several days to re-install my programs. I highly recommend not doing it. From your last post your system seems clean. If you re-install the O/S that does NOT mean your drive will work!

Take precautions before you re-install!

All of this is, of course, if the drive can read the Windows CD! If the drive has/is failing and your in the middle of a reinstall and it dies, you'll be in worse shape than you are now. IMHO, I wouldn't try an install with a drive that has reading problems.

Nah petjelly not yet - just save up $30 to get a drive.
The drive is 6 years old so it's time may have come.
Even if you want to reformat I would think there are still things (files, pic's etc) that you would not like to lose and still get off the drive. Got a usb port and some thumb drives? Another way to get it off.

Just know that if your drive is bad a reformat will not fix that.
Keep us posted I'm sure one of guys here might be able to help you w/ a reformat if that's your choice.
